U.S. Sugar 148: The Sugarland Sunbeam (4K)

Florida is known for being a tourist destination for its year round warm climate, hundreds of miles of beaches, alligators, and theme parks. Lesser known, however, is that it is home to plentiful agricultural industries. U.S. Sugar is one such industry; a massive sugar cane producer that accounts for roughly 10% of all domestic sugar in the United States and large enough that it has its own railroad! Nearly a century ago, the cane trains that are currently hauled by diesels were originally hauled by various ex-Florida East Coast 4-6-2 “Pacifics”, and later on found the arrival of 1920 American Locomotive Company-built #148 in the 1950s. After serving its time as a cane-hauler, the engine went through multiple ownership changes, becoming a passenger excursion engine in New Jersey on the Black River & Western and later in disrepair in Colorado. Eventually in 2016, the engine was purchased back by U.S. Sugar to startup its new tourist operation, the Sugar Express. The engine returned to operation in 2020 in time for its 100th birthday, and saw its first public excursion hauling passengers in December of 2021. This video covers the first photo charter with the engine, hosted by Trains Magazine in the last weekend of January 2022, with a mixed cane train on the branches south of Clewiston and a short passenger train north towards Palmdale. Not since 1975 has No. 148 stepped out and showed what those 68” drivers on a stretch of well maintained high iron can do! Kudos on a superb rebuilding, she looks perfect and happy to run at 5 mph or 40 mph. Great video!

148 is sure gonna be bringing lots of tourists to Florida in the coming future and likely more once 1504 is up and running.

That’s how they reset the sugar cane fields. They burn the stems for the next round of crops. They had quite a few of them going when we were out there.
