U.S. Marine Recon Underwater Training

The definition of keeping your composure under pressure 👀|
Bobbing is when Marines take a large breath at the surface of the water. They then exhale immediately, causing them to sink to the bottom of the 12-foot pool.
From there, they push forward in an upward direction toward the surface. This is completed with hands and feet bound by rope.
During the screening, the bobbing was executed for five minutes.
“The bobbing exercise is designed to have the Marines practice controlling their breathing,”
If you can’t conquer your fear in a controlled environment, then how can you be expected to conquered your fear when it REALLY matters ?

@@waterbottlecrinkle6973 we grew up in a low income community. Urban environment. We had a community pool but it was hood af and crowded, so no “real” swimming could be had. We had the beach like 45+min away but like most folks, we just kept it waist deep in water. So most never really got too familiar or comfortable with swimming. When I got to Marine bootcamp, reality set in when I saw us black and brown folk sinking like rocks and stressing all night if we were gonna pass swim qual. When I got to the Marine corps fleet, one of my boys taught me how to swim in one of the pools on base, on the weekends as part of our post lift cardio No one else was there, just me and my two boys, and they guided me how to properly tread water, how get comfortable with the water and not panic, and how to use proper technique. It's actually super calming to do this. I do this in the river a lot. Of course not on very deep spots and obviously not tied. For marine recon it is. But just marines go through a training exercise where they simulate a chopper crash in a body of water using a contraption that’s identical to the hull of a chopper on the inside that spins upside down when entering the water and you have to unbuckle and navigate your way out. It’s hard to differentiate up from down during the training. But before that training, they sit you in these seats that’s attached to the edge of the pool and turn you upside down to get you used to your sinuses filling with water. They also do the same thing in the bottom of a pool with one oxygen tank between two people and get you used to taking breaths with sinuses filled with water. The last thing your body wants to do when sinuses are filled with water is take a breath. It’s difficult but getting used to your sinuses being filled is the hard part.

This is back in the early 2000's. Navy had a water confidence course where you are doing something similar to this ( not the same though). When you think you are a good swimmer to be humbled real quick. Those who swam competitively in their younger years flourished in the course. But you get a better understanding what you are capable of in water. At one point i could hold my breath for 1 min and 15 seconds with the techniques they teach you (only was able to hold it for 20 seconds prior to the course). ALOT of people quit after the first/second day ( 5 day course). Really a humbling experience. Source: prior Navy station off 32nd street San Diego, CA

Quick question, do recons do any form of training using bikes or UAVs? Based on many videos, it seems like diving is the main job.

Synchronized swimmer is laughing at you
When I was in my twenties we did this in senior lifesaving class. As long as you don’t get nervous, it’s actually not too hard.
Yes, I did it this past weekend for fun. Depth of 18-20ft.
I almost forgot to breath, just watching this. 😵
Looks fun ngl I'd try it. Idk if I would succeed but I'd definitely give it a go !
This is where living near the ocean and free diving springs comes in handy😂 but most people are from land locked places and probably dont get to swim and be in deep water often
Not trying to put them down, but this seems pretty easy... Except that part where that guy brakes his ties, that was pretty impressive.
I teach my kids to do this in the pool to get to back to the side. It’s a great exercise..
