U.S. Army M119A3 Howitzers Direct Fire Practice Exercise

Ғылым және технология

U.S. Soldiers, assigned to Task Force Cacti, 25th Infantry Division, operate their 105mm M119A3 Howitzers during a field artillery live-fire exercise at Pho Lym Yai, Thailand, March 20, 2020, as part of the Hanuman Guardian Exercise.
This type of training aims to strengthen the artillery unit’s readiness and tactical proficiency, and ensures the units remain versatile, responsive, and consistently available for current and future contingencies.

    The benefits of any decision must justify its opportunity costs. The M777 can go places self-propelled howitzers w/ autoloaders cannot. It can also travel vast distances to destinations not served by airports, b/c it can be sling loaded by helicopters while self-propelled howitzers cannot. It is rather difficult to combine towed artillery and autoloaders, but the M777 definitely automates more work than predecessor M198.

    Does the sighting system account for trunnion tilt? That piece had a pronounced left lean. Anyone know about that?

  • @echostar034

    @echostar034

    2 жыл бұрын

    To my knowledge the M119A3 has no Trunnion but could be wrong there, if there is one its never greatly mentioned or discussed, or goes by a different common name. It is stationed on a base plate with two Slos on either side just behind the tires assisting with recoil and stability, allowing a cant of 220 mils. While there is lean its within tolerance. The sight is a standard scope with multiple lines to indicate lead, such as leading left or right by certain distances, since its attached to a mount which is attached to the gun, its leaning just like the gun is. Also the quadrant aka elevation of the tube is accounted for separately from the sight based on distance, so the lean will only affect sight picture really. The sight only help you traverse left or right, not elevate or depress.

    Just some observations: Dig the f##king spade in. W/outbthe spade dug in, the next rd took forever. PKM team had plenty of time to acquire and engage before next rd down range (600 meters, cannon crew's toast). Soviet tank crew with auto load still would have beat that crew. Dig that spade in.

  • @echostar034

    @echostar034

    2 жыл бұрын

    Been on an M119A3 for 2 years, never dug the spade in. You do it on M777. Counter arguments. Next round took forever cause spade wasnt dug in - Maybe, but with a charge 7 the gun is going to move, even with a dug in spade. But if you dig the spade in too far you may violate a pre fire check, the trails not touching the ground. Yeah, including the end of the trails where the spade is, that little plate just in front of the spade cant touch the ground. Also if it did hit but the weapon shifted, so now they had to shift trails left or right, they would have to either muscle the spade out of the ground, or undig it, thus wasting even more time and energy than digging the spade in. Not to mention the spade digs itself in after standard firing (But not too deep honestly, usually just like a few inches into the ground), from the usual angle we fire at, which is not direct fire. PKM team argument - realistically a Killer Junior round would take even longer, thats a timed charge 1, so they have to calculate distance, and then calculate the time which last crew drill I did on that took ages and we were just simulating, not using live rounds. We can always, you know, do the other thing we are trained to do and shift the M240B to engage, or engage with our small arms while the top 3 load and operate the Howitzer. Soviet Tank Crew - They have an autoloader, they will beat us even if we are PERFECT. There is no getting around that a standard HE is not build to take on tanks, and at that point we would have probably attempted a blitz. As an old AIT instructor once told me, if you can see the tank the world has failed you.

    I'm surprised we're still using the 105s. I was under the impression the US Army abandoned the 105s since they argued that the 155s could do the same roles the 105s can but better.

    I was on a m119a3 105mm cannon and the m777a2 155mm cannon the only thing the m777 doesn't have is the mobility and rate of fire thats that is the main reason we stull use a 105mm cannon tho they are being phased out within the next few years

  • @atlas42185

    @atlas42185

    There is no 155mm howitzer light enough to be sling-loaded by a Blackhawk, which is the work horse of US Army's VTOL fleet. Other than the ammunition and guns being lighter, 105mm is inferior. However, the Blackhawk's limited external payload presents a major logistics deficit w/ respect to M777, so the M119 plays a critical role in strategically mobile artillery until Blackhawk's replacement materializes. In total, the US Army has more 155mm systems, but it has more 105mm M119s than it does 155mm M777, which is the only other towed system in use. On the topic of replacements, US Army's FVL program seeks a family of helicopters to replace Blackhawk, among other designs. The FVL-medium lift's external payload will almost certainly exceed the Blackhawk's enough to sling M777.
