U.S. AIR FORCE AIR STRIKES IN NORTH VIETNAM in 1966 BOMBING OF HANOI 23384

Support Our Channel : / periscopefilm
This declassified film details attacks by the USAF in North Vietnam and Laos in 1966. Some of the attacks include F-4s and F-105s, some flying out of Korat Air Base. Includes rare footage of a North Vietnamese MiGs being shot down by cannon fire. Seventeen MiGs were shot down in 1966, including a MiG-21 shot down by a sidewinder missile.
At the beginning of 1966, the number of U.S. military personnel in South Vietnam totaled 184,314. South Vietnamese military forces totaled 514,000 including the army (ARVN) and the Regional Force and Popular Force (the "Ruff-Puffs") militias. The North Vietnamese Army (PAVN) numbered 400,000, most still in North Vietnam. 50,000 North Vietnamese cadre and soldiers infiltrated South Vietnam during 1965. Group 559, charged with transporting supplies down the Ho Chi Minh Trail to supply communist troops in both South Vietnam and Laos, numbered 24,400 personnel.
The U.S. estimated the number of Viet Cong (VC) and PAVN soldiers in South Vietnam at nearly 280,000 by June 1966, including part-time guerrillas. A bombing pause of North Vietnam had been announced by President Johnson on December 24 and was in effect.

Repeatedly bombing empty (and easily repaired) road junctions and bridges while the airfields, SAM sites and Hai Phong docks were all off limits. You won't find a better example of how not to win a war.

During the Civil War and World War 2, cities were bombed while civilians were still in them. Of course, there were no airplanes in the Civil War but artillery fire rained down on Southern cities. Same destruction of civilian targets.

  • @DerpyDaringDitzyDoo

Sorry I am a bit late to this. Underwater bridges were a common tactic in WW2 especially. They are crudely constructed and comprised typically of logs, dirt, and/or sand. They don't come above the surface of the water so as not to block the river or be easily spotted. But they come up enough from the bottom of the river that heavy equipment and some vehicles can cross the river without having to tread too deep of water. It was an especially effective tactic employed by both the US and North Korean forces in the Korean War, and the VC used them extensively to cross rivers without relying on more conventional bridges. With an underwater bridge, you can cross a river just about anywhere without too much work.

All those bombings and all those Vietnamese civilians and soldiers casualties didn't work because they didn't cause any impact on the North Vietnamese army and Vietcong guerrillas morale for 8 long years, quite the opposite, they made them fight even with more determination until the U.S. just had to quit. The U.S. made a huge miscalculation in Vietnam.

Compare the bombing of German cities during World War 2 where German civilians were military targets. Most of the bombing in this film is of roads and bridges, and river ports. Most of the targets are in Laos, not North Vietnam.and Hanoi isn't bombed at all. Haiphong isn't bombed which was a major sea port where ships unloaded war supplies from China and Russian. Were Russian and Chinese ships carrying war materials ever bombed during the Vietnam War?

Not to mention the US war crimes committed in Vietnam. Despite all their superiority in weapons and technology, the Americans underestimated one thing: the morale of the Vietnamese and their stamina and will. The war ended in disaster and flight for the Americans.

TheMajestuoso exactly correct. The targets for Operation Rolling Thunder were selected very carefully to keep civilian casualties down to almost zero and keep China and or the Soviet Union from entering the conflict. LBJ still caught hell for it in the press and during demonstrations.

TheMajestuoso Keeping China and Russia out of the war so that the US military couldn't continue with this bullying, shooting fish in a barrel behaviour? Ever wonder why the North Koreans are so fanatical? Because the US continued to bomb them long after it was necessary. More bombs than were dropped in the entire WWII.

@@suchadagg8857 The Vietnam bombing was silly, but the Korean air war wasn't. We absolutely stopped bombing as soon as the cease fire went into effect. Before that, if it had value, it was on the list to bomb.

@@TheJMascis666 LBJ and Robert McNamara both deserve all the shame accorded them for their prosecution of this war. Their policy of gradualism was insane and the targets they selected were not of great value until much later in the war; their Rules of Engagement (ROE) were pitifully restrictive to US aircrew who frequently lost their lives because of them. To enter a war without a goal of winning is a pointless and painful endeavor, and Vietnam is the go-to example of how not to conduct one.

It did work. North Vietnam signed the Paris Peace Accords when President Nixon stopped spinning wheels and really bombed Hanoi and Haiphong. What happened is the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army were left in South Vietnam after the permanent peace agreement was signed. China and Russia helped North Vietnam rebuild their armies but the US Congress cut off military aid to South Vietnam. And when North Vietnam attacked South Vietnam, we did not enforce the peace agreement as promised, instead we abandoned South Vietnam. Shameful.
