It's much easier to get elected as a popular independent candidate in a small local ward where turnout is low, than in a large constituency with a higher turnout. The larger parties have always seemed to perform better at a national level than a local one, Many of those who voted for an independent candidate in the locals will vote for the candidate of whichever party is most likely to defeat the Tory in the general.

Not my words, but the words of Rick Blackman Now that an election has been called, it’s important to get both current and historical perspective here. Other Labour Party leaders may in comparison to Starmer seem like socialists, but they were no friends of the left or the working class. The role of the Labour Party has always been to manage capitalism in a slightly more fairer way than the Tories or Liberals. Lenin in reply to a comment that the LP are the voice of the trade unions said that they were in fact the voice of the trade union bureaucracy. Indeed they have never represented the interests of the rank and file, quite the opposite. We should not romanticise that they have ever been any different. Corbyn is the aberration, not Starmer, Smith, Wilson or MacDonald. That said, the unique relationship that the LP has with the trade union movement allows us an ‘in’ that does not exist anywhere in politics, (certainly not in the Tory party) in the UK. It’s true that this ‘in’ has diminished in the last 30 years, but, and it’s a big but, it does still exist. The bigger picture dictates that we must think in terms of our class. The first and most important thing is to rid ourselves of the tories. A victory for them, however unlikely, would be a disaster from which we may possibly never recover. So that is the first priority. If people are political and on the left, it’s important to remember that many of our class are not, and do not necessarily compare and contrast the politics of Starmer to Blair to Attlee. The tories must be stopped. However, this does not mean we give carte blanche to the genocide enabling and serial liar Starmer and where independent candidates are standing we should, I believe, vote for them. There needs to be a left pressure on the Labour government. Where no left candidates exist, the discomfort we may feel voting for Starmer is incomparable to the pain of the tories winning. Vote Left, then Vote Labour. Kick the Tories out and Keep on Kicking.

"historic" election. Please. I got out of bed this morning, that was also historic, as it happened in the past. This constant attempt by the media to over hype stuff is just grating.

She means historic because her team is about to win, and she will be able to openly support all the same things the tories did because they are now being done by labour and they can claim people voted for it.

@@frankem51 Shes a socialist, which is just a gateway ideology to communism. Communism has to collapse capitalism because too many people succeed under capitalism to provide enough impetus to deliver a communist revolution. So communists have to destroy capitalism first, then offer their solution. They do this by criticising all effecting social structures until society ceases to function.

Professor John Curtice the sort of UK Goto Guru when it comes to any sort of political elections has already said since the General Election was first called only yesterday that he thinks it highly unlikely that the Conservatives will get back in this time round and to be perfectly honest I simply think that the people of the UK have had enough of them for the foreseeable future. Vote for change, Vote for Labour.

The same Guru who regularly gets predictions wrong? Lots of us remember what Liebour did to the country, they haven't changed. More mass migration, huge public debts, gender madness and a shattered economy. The only change is the colour in number 10 blue to red. We are between the devil and the deep blue sea.

Both the US and UK lack are having all the wrong people elected to office. Our systems need reform to encourage people who are actually interested in the common good and passing workable legislation. We face an election of two clowns here also. Both uninterested in anything for the common good

This is likely to be more of a 2010 election than a 1997 election. Labour had lost their shine but the Tories were as bright as a house brick. The result will probably be down to the vagaries of FPTP more than anythig else. I can't really see the media getting behind Sunak or Starmer. It will be a distraction for them after months of relentless dystopia coming from Gaza. Should Labour struggle to get a majority we might see another election before too long where independents will have a field day.

It was New Labour's client state which prevented Cameron winning a clear majority. ie...benefits 4 U,..votes for us.....jobs 4 U...votes for us.
