You use contrast straight out of bottle?

This is gonna help me out so much! I just got a Norn Emissary yesterday which is gonna be my first Tyranid model and I was wondering how I was gonna go about painting him and it doesn't look as difficult as I thought with this method so thanks again!

Great video! I would have diluted the magos 1-part Magos to 3-parts Medium, that’s how i did my leviathan army. So that more of the white or bone color is preserved, and so that magos builds up in the “recesses”. But it’s a matter of taste and how "you" want to paint “your” minis. I want more of that purple, pink and white to contrast, more like the cover art. Other than that a great video, 100% sub from me! =)

Thank you for subscribing! That is a great suggestion too. Do you think that as an alternative to diluting contrasts, that an additional white drybrush over the white primer (prior to the contrast) can enhance the contrast effect? I’ve seen some KZreadrs do this but not tried it myself 🤔

@@rawhammer80 well, no =) And thats becouse the white scar is very white, and even though there are whiter white, the contrastpaint is "very" strong. it would not make much difference in the end. It could make some difference if you used a cream color primer, and then add a white heavy drybrush or over brush before the contrast. I prime my tyranids wraithbone. Contrast (3:1). Drybrush with wraithbone. Then i drybrush select parts with palid wych flesh. After that, on "hero" models i go over the models with thinned down wraith and or palid to paint to paint over some of the eventual "chalky" parts from the drybrush. Make it smooth and clean. The gounts and smaller models dont get this treatment, only the bigger monsters and the "hero" models. But thats me, one of the reasons i started a tyranid army was due to the GW leviathan color scheme, the contarst between the purple and the bone color. I have painted the carapace 2 layers shyish purple instead of the one GW use, to get a deeper purple for example. And my advice is to continue with your scheme if you like it. That is the beauty with the hobby, that we paint our armies they way we like. =) I would however advice to use contrast medium for many contrast paints and never paint stright from the pot. Paint a 2 layers of diluted contrast layers. It easier to work with, and much easier to avoid "coffee staines" that is one of the issues many have with contrast straight out of the pot. Water works to dilute contast, but it can change the way the medium in the paints works, its "capilary effects". But have used water when i run out of contrast medium. With all that said, i have no issues with the finished result on you model, or your painting skills. The result was great while not spending hours upon hours painting, and for most of us, thats the what we want, we want to get our minis battle ready. If you have any spare testing model, try it out. My first time using contrast paint ended with me dipping my models in paint remover, to start over, they looked like shit compared to my other models painted using the regular paints, base, layers, shades and glazes. Now i use contrats most of the time, only using normal paints to highlight or change some parts of the paintwork. The rest is just nitpicking =)

When I use leviathan purple it ends up super super shiny. How did you get it to not be shiny

  • @rawhammer80

@dcsaustin2 I think maybe the Genestealer Purple drybrush takes any shiny (ness) away to give a more matte finish. Let me know if this works for you 🙂

12:54 - This isn't slap-chop, lol. This is just the absolute bare minimum, but it still looks really cool. He'll look very intimidating on the table. I was pretty disappointed with the scale of the new Norn beasts. They are way too small...
