Typing Demo XL - ZealPC Clickiez (8BitDo keyboard)

Ғылым және технология

The first TDXL video in almost 4 years! It's not very often nowadays that I get to show something that actually sounds good, or even interesting! Hope you enjoy the video, if I get a taste for it I might do some more videos on a few I've reviewed in the meantime that deserve a TDXL :) .

    This board is way better than it should be for $100, a great base to put switches in but the box whites it comes with were a great pick for it.

    I think you just found the best board to house the Clickiez. This is by far the best sounding modern keyboard-switch combo you made. I think with matching SA ABS caps, these would be close to Alps-like in sound now. Speaking of Alps, i forgot to ask this side question that you may have never answered... what ever happened to the Datacomp FK555 Blue Alps Keyboard?

    Interesting.... Based on the recorded sound, I think that case adds a ton of it's own resonance to the clickiez... Which may or may not be desirable. I have a set of clickiez in the class 80, and I think that keyboard affects their sound far less (probably due to the density of the case)

    The Zeal switches sound's... fuller, less 'ping' and more 'clack'... don't know how to describe it. It sounds a lot closer to ALPS. Definitely my next goal: to replace the current white switches to the Zeals. Many thanks for shooting this video 👍

  • @tendieman69

    No it doesn’t. Alps sounds like a gentle click, where zeal sounds like echo clack with plastic knocking on each other. It honestly sounds terrible and cheap. Not to mention the force required to even press it down is way too sharp where some space bar can’t even return properly due to amber style leaf teeth.

  • @roundduckkira

    @roundduckkira

    zeal clickiez actually sound quite alps like despite the different sound at its core, ion sam made a video with them on the ncr 80 that sounds glorious that chyrosran22 commented on, and even my bauer lite with a alu plate (the original plastic plate made it sound overly plasticky) sounds pretty nice. You just don't throw clickiez on a not hollow alu design, even the alu boards on zeal's channel makes their sound, well, sound like crap. Hollowness, plastic possibly, clickiez, and a metal or stiff plate are needed to simulate that old keyboard sound.

  • @roundduckkira

    @roundduckkira

    @@tendieman69the failing to return is more blamed on the light switches using overly light springs, they use 40g springs, as in bottom out. Yes it takes more force to actuate mx red than it is to press a linearized clickiez switch fully down. add a clicker and it gives a weird force situation when stabbed keys are involved.

    @@tendieman69also alps is the opposite of gentle, listen to those typing tests again, very loud sound. that said, it is funny tho because as standalone switches clickiez and alps sound drastically different (clickiez has a tonk sound while alps has a more typical but deep click sound) but in keyboards they sound similar. The main weak spot acoustically for Clickiez is from the material, not using nylon (like Cherry) or abs (like ALPS) does lead to that typical translucent mx switch bottom out sound, but the click makes up for it and blends in with the sound.

    While the Zeal Clickiez sound really good for MX type clicky switch I just wish Zeal would produce a variant with fraction of the tactility as even the 40g variant tactility is overkill for longer typing sessions. By experimenting a bit I found that by bending Clickiez leaves just the right amount the switches are capable of light tactility force with still keeping most of the sound. Unfortunately this mod is too unreliable to do manually in order to generate consistent batch of similar feeling and sounding switches.

  • @GurtTarctor

    The difference is primarily noticeable in the high frequencies. Box Whites have a much higher pitched and very short click due to the click bar, Clickiez have a lower pitched and "fuller" sounding click due to the larger click leaf and the fact they impact the housing. But aside from that the overall sound in the two tests is quite similar as the keyboard's construction and caps contribute to most of the audible feedback. If you compared the two switch designs in a dampened metal case keyboard the difference would be much more obvious.
