Types of Stiffeners and Interfacing in Bag Making | Eris Atelier

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

So in simple words interfaces and stiffeners act as the skeletal framework of every bag. Most times a bag cannot stand on its own so adding a stiffener gives it that structure and this gives your project a more professional look.
QUESTIONS-
Lindsey Barlow
Understanding bag stiffeners and reinforcements
Deshola leather works
Please what type of interface do you use for the sides of the bag?
ANSWER- For the sides, I used 1mm thick chipboard
Lamidi Oluwatunmise
Can a manual machine sew this (hard paper board/ kariboard) perfectly??
ANSWER- Domestic sewing machines can sew through softer stiffeners and interfaces but I am sure the needle may start to struggle through thick/heavy stiffeners
Oluwatosin Bamidele
PLS ma, Is maco and fibre the same thing as chipboard? Thank you
ANSWER- Nope they're all different
TYPES OF STIFFENERS & INTERFACE
Soft foam (a.k.a mattress foam)
EVA foam / ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer foam ( a.k.a mako)
EPE foam / Expanded Polyethylene foam - waterproof foam
Cellulose board is mainly used for insoles but is great for structured bags.
Chipboard
Iron-on interface of varying thicknesses
WHAT ARE THE BEST TIMES TO USE THESE INTERFACES AND STIFFENERS?
IRON ON INTERFACE- Soft fabric tote
SOFT FOAM- quilted bags, soft kiddie bags, Camera/gear bag
EVA FOAM/MACO- Medium soft tote bag,

Hello greetings from a Mozambican in Portugal, when washing powder was called OMO, it bought back memories of home in Moz, any toothpaste we either call COLGATE or AQUAFRESH, any dish-washing liquid or clothes soap bar (especially if its green colored) is automatically called SUNLIGHT (Unilever brand), any chocolate is either NESTLE or CADBURY, any tea is FIVE ROSES and any instant coffee grounds is automatically RICOFFY. most of these products come from South Africa, (unfortunately we dont produce much ourselves). it makes life so much easier. Much love and God Bless.

Incredibly valuable video, thank you. EVA foam unfortunately, from my experience has very poor resilience over time if the piece is constantly bent - it likes to crumble. And,as most foams, it really dislikes UV light so one has to be mindful of it's storage - away from sunlight. More often than not, I use cotton twill - both as fabric and as twill tape and leather board (basically scrap leather ground together and glued and pressed into sheets) - it's better than cardboard and other kinds of cellulose/synthetics and still cheaper than brand name reinforcement types. I've had some success using thin upholstery foam for softer handles, shoulder straps and once for quilting with success (although it does require additional fabric backing). In specialty applications, one can use things like mesh reinforced thermoplastic (reinforcing plastic bags or incredibly stiff panels) such as Worbla Mesh Art and even kevlar/aramid fibre sheet (I've used it to make a "self defense" bag for women's self defense exhibition - aramid fibres are used in bulletproof vests and especially layered, can block knife strikes). I've also used thrifted fabrics and leftover pieces of leather laid over fabric and machine stitched 5mm apart as my reinforcement and bottom panels. Historically people used what they've had on hand. My friend has used fabric from her husband's work wear - protective construction etc wear fabric is fantastic as reinforcement due to it's strength, stability and thickness. (Also, hopefully this doesn't sound creepy, but you have absolutely perfect lips - I am really tempted to use You as an example of the result I want from my lip procedure - although I doubt surgeons can replicate natural beauty in full capacity. Mother Nature has blessed you!)

I felt the same. You wanna know what fabric interfacing is called in my home country (Thai), it's called "Lucky" mostly by older people. And those supplies are sold in old market district with elder unfriendly marchants, whose think they're holier than thou. Literally they frickin called "Lucky" because of the ancient brand name which doesn't exist anymore. Like why?...why can't people just called items correctly, to prevent lots of miscommunication.

I've been sewing bags for 2yrs now. Here is the states we have decovil light and heavy which is good but costly for the amount you get. So after some research I've decided to try ram board which is used to cover before painting homes etc. I got the thickest one and will use this with the contact cement hope it works out. I've also used car headliner foam to try to cut cost but not the overall look. I'll update this comment after I give it a try. Hoping to give the state people's alternative ideas. Love the look of your bags...going to give it a try❤

I make beaded bags and I sew inner lining for them. crystal bags are not firm and do not stand properly so I’m looking for something to add to the inner lining so when I sew it to the beaded bag it will stand

Please what stiffeners would you recommend for denim bags?

  • @TheErisFoundation

depends on the design of the denim bag, using kari board/ cellulose paper will make your bag stiff then uva foam will make it softer
