Good morning. As soon as I saw your video uploaded I opened it up. Thank you for an exceptional educational video on peonies. I too have several different varieties of peonies and love them for early Spring color. I just purchased the yellow ITOH variety last year from Home Depot on clearance and am excited to see if I get flowers this year. Thanks for being here for us. You are definitely one of my favorite gardeners for educational videos. You do such a great job and give clear instructions that are easy to follow. Keep up the good work 👏

Can’t wait to to see your peonies in bloom again this year.I followed your advice last year and pruned my tall leggy tree peonies down somewhat, I’m happy to report they are sprouting a whole lot of new growth. I may even get brave enough to find a sunnier spot for them. So thank you for your advice.💐

I think I need to get some tree peonies! Also you mentioned a peony for the shade…that excites me…I’ll have to look for that too!! 18 degrees here this morning!! Spent some time outside this past weekend and happy to see some green growth! Time to get some liquid fence down!

Yep! Stinking cold! I really dread the frigid cold snaps after a week of nice weather. I sprayed deer fence today! Cold as it was, at least it was barely above freezing. Woodland peonies are something I need to try. I have a ton of shade.

Oh wow I did not know that there were different kinds of peonies. I built my house on a piece of my grandmother's property and there are peonies on it that come up faithfully ever year since I was alittle girl. They are the herbaceous ones according to your video. I'll have to look to see if they are coming up yet . And oh man it is gonna be cold here in N.Y. like you said tommorow. Was snow flurrying here today on a sunday.Just love to watch you. I always learn something and your so inspirational. What a great video as always!

Peonies only caught my eye over this past winter so I decided to buy my very first ones. I must have missed yours last spring but can’t wait to see them this year. I hope mine do well as they were bare root when I bought Anna planted them. They started growing quickly and I had such hope for them but our southern spring right now is more like the dead of summer so I’m sad for them. They look like they’re dying already. I’m clueless but I’ll watch your beauties bloom while I pray for mine LOL. Here’s to a successful year

They are not of fan of high heat for sure. We've had years where thats happened during bloom and they flowers lasted a day and they were toast. I hate the hot springs... they def ruin alot of the early spring color in my gardens. If you're in the south, do you have them planted in part shade or afternoon shade? This can help the plant stress less during high heat periods. Keep them well watered, they are pretty resilient plants. Sometimes they may take a couple years to establish so dont give up! :-)

Lovely photos, lovely peonies. Many peonies have such a strong scent I do not bring them in for bouquets. For the amount of real estate they use in a garden, they do not contribute flowers for very long. It always seems as if we get a heat wave just as they are starting to bloom and poof the flowers are spent. Very sad.

I share your frustration with bloom times for sure! And last year... that exact thing happened. During the tree peony bloom, we had a spike in temps and the flowers were gone in two days. Very sad. But what helps is planting a variety of types because each one I mention in the video blooms at a different time in spring. So even though last year, the tree peony blooms went quickly, I did get to enjoy the bush peonies for a longer period a few weeks later. And then the ITOH peonies bloom after the bush peonies. I really wished they rebloomed or I could control the temp during their bloom though. :-)

I know the weather is driving me crazy! 🙄 It was so beautiful last week here in KS then cold comes through again. I had a bunch of peonies removed out of the flower beds last summer and I was really regretting it. They had black mold or mildew on them. They were literally black. I freaked, thought it was going to infect everything. This is all new to me but my mom had planted them a long time ago so they were a special variety I can’t find. Also, remembered it takes a few years for new peonies to really establish and bloom nicely. I completely forgot about that when I removed almost all the peonies. Thinking oh I’ll just get some new ones. We have fairly small flower beds surrounding the house and those were so big. I just wanted to clear some space. Lo and behold I see those cute little red buds popping through the mulch. Lol my daughter’s boyfriend must of done a cruddy job removing them, thankfully the special ones are coming back. Just hope they don’t turn black again. It looked like powdery mildew in the beginning then the leaves just turned black by late July. So weird I’ve never seen peonies do that before. Usually they have pretty foliage till fall. We live close to a creek so maybe it came from there.

Oh that’s really exciting to know some made it!! Yay for sloppy plant removers haha! I’m so happy you still have some! Sometimes, the wet years are the worst for powdery mildew. We had an extremely wet year last year and the peonies were def covered here with powdery mildew. You can try a copper fungicide early on if you see a wet season shaping up or see signs of it starting. It will Help. 😊

Good morning. Love the timing of this upload. I purchased 10 ITOH peonies and planted them in the fall. Looks like all of them made it through the winter. I've NEVER grown peonies and have no clue how to take care of them so I needed this class! Do I need to get peony rings for this type? I saw on the video staking is needed for the bush type. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge!

This is so awesome!! 10!! Wow you’re my hero! I need to catch up! 😂 So the best thing about ITOH’s is that they do NOT need staking. They have strong stems and their habit is shorter than herbaceous peonies so you are good to grow without them! Post pics of the blooms on my FB page if you can! Would love to see them!

Are your tree peonies in full sun? I was told they needed to be protected from full sun, which has lead to constantly repositioning bamboo paper shades over the two I have. Also, other than compost, do you fertilize them and, if so, what do you use? So glad to see you back more often. A true sign of spring for me! 😊

This question comes up alot... and alot of people have mentioned to me that they've been instructed NOT to plant in full sun... In many zones, this is absolutely good advice. I happen to be in a cold zone (5b) and full sun gets me a TON of flowers and growth with no adverse growing effects. I think if you're in a warmer zone where the sun and temps are extremely hot and drying, part shade or afternoon shade would be the best location to avoid stressing the plant during those conditions. I compost first, then as I see the buds starting to form, I fertilize as a foliar feed with Neptunes Harvest Fish and Seaweed Blend Fish Emulsion. Foliar feeding is just watering over the leaves and letting it sink in at the base of the plant. I do that every two weeks until the blooms are done. I also put down Espoma's Plant Tone right before mulching.... its a granular all purpose fertilizer. Once the blooms are done, I deadhead them and fertilize one last time with the Neptune's Harvest to help it create buds for the following year. Thats the last time I fertilize them. They are pretty stagnant over the summer until the cooler weather sets in. :-)

You have some gorgeous peonies! For some reason, I have rabbits eating up my tree peonies! I haven't seen blooms on one of them for several years now (no matter what I spray so I'll have to fence it off - ugh!). How and when do you fertilize and what do you use to fertilize with? 😀

Oh thats a bummer! If you haven't, try buying the Liquid Deer & Rabbit Fence concentrate and make the ratio of concentrate to water stronger so the repellant is super strong smelling. And spray every two weeks consistently. That has worked for me when the deer got used to the strength of the ready to use pre-made solution. Peonies need a cooler dormant period… they grow best in zones 2-8, sometimes 9 depending on the varieties. I live in zone 5b.

I’ve never heard of tree peonies - used to have a few bush peonies - little ants were always on the flower buds - saw it in other gardens too - what’s up with that ?

The peonies have a "sweet sugary" substance on the buds when they are close to opening so ants are attracted to it. They wont harm the buds, they are just annoying if you want to bring the peonies in for a bouquet and the ants are still on the open flowers. Tree peonies are beautiful...one of my favorite types!

Hi! Peonies should have at least 4 hours of direct sun to have the best bloom. If you are in a northern climate like me, I plant in full Sun which is 6+ hours per day. If you are in a warmer climate, afternoon shade is recommended. 😊

I wish I had the time to propagate mine! Its not too easy and they dont grow true to the parent plant from seed.... Its a bummer!

It is… most of the time by grafting in herbaceous roots, it’s a little tricky but done all the time. 😊
