Its odd to see this video I directed and edited it when i was 22 I think, Brings back great memories, I thought it was lost, all i have is an old 1" master of it, glad someone digitized it. If anyone is interested i could write up the whole story of this video , it was a blast to do. Little known fact, the priests with the gas masks are actually the members of Life of Agony. We shot the video in Peters basement, Lamours, the i beam cross was in Peters back yard, bedroom scene was my ex girlfriends apartment and the park scene was shot in staten Island.

I'd love to hear more background on your experience making the vid and your memories of spending time with the band...all the good and the bad and the funny, of course ;D No better band out there, then or now. Thanks for the info in your post above. It must have been a hoot spending time with those guys, always sarcastic and screwing around...was Johnny there at this time (Sal's drum tech) or no?? Thanks again!!

nastyprimate WOW! What a story to remember and tell about it. Thank you for sharing this with everyone here on KZread. I love this video and how peter steele looks in this video. He looks healthy and alive. Wish he could have kept going and never ended like the way it did. So sad but what can we do he is gone now and has broken lots of hearts. But thank you and I am happy to hear these kinds of stories from them. Please do share more. Its very interesting to know what type o negative was all about. 😊😊😊

Watching Peter Steele in this video is so surreal. I met him back in 1997 and we hung out for a few hours. He had such a great sense of humor, easy to be around, and he loved to watch me smoke my cigarette. He was also very "Romantic". I didn't want to say that because it sounds so cliche'. I was foretold by a friend of mine that he was real arrogant and rude. Quite the opposite. I met up with him again the following week when he played at the Oz Fest. He had sent me 6 free tickets in the mail prior to that day. This is like over 20 years ago. Anyways, what an awesome time of my life I had back then. May he R.I.P.

So firstly please keep in mind this was shot and cut over 30 years ago or so and my memories of the event are a bit dodgy at this point. I still hold Lord Petrus Steel in the highest regard and hope that I don’t come across in any other way. I first heard of Peter Steele when I was 15 in high school. I met a kid named Michael White who was the brother of Petes girlfriend or fiancé at the time, I never got to meet Pete but Michael White did play the demo tape of Carnivore for all of us that hung out at the statue in John Dewey HS. They just changed their name from Fallout to Carnivore and it had 3 songs on it Carnivore, WW 3 and 4 and the subhuman. I can’t even describe the awe and amazement I felt the first time I heard it. Anyway that was my introduction to the band, Ive been a fan ever since. Over the years that followed I got to see them play over a dozen times.Though I had minor interactions with Pete I was just another fan and he was always gracious and polite. Fast forward a few years and I was a budding young video editor working for Caesar Video Graphics. I loved metal and wanted to direct and edit metal music videos. As luck would have it my girlfriend at the time was a freelance writer for several heavy metal magazines and already did many interviews with various bands so she had some clout in the industry. I don’t recall whether it was her idea or mine to combine me doing a video for a band and her writing an article about it. Since we met at Type O negative show and we where both huge fans we decided that she would contact Ken Kreedy (sp?) Their manager and pitch the idea to him. I would shoot and edit the video for free and she would feature the whole process in an article. Soon after I was on a conference call with Ken and soon after that I was on a call with the whole band and for the life of me I don’t recall what was said, wish I did but I was very much a star struck fan crapping my pants during both calls trying to bullshit my way in to getting the job. Soon after the call I spoke to Peter a few times on the phone and then since I lived in Brooklyn heights and he was working for the park department, specifically he was working in the park on the promenade, he suggested we meet there. I think we met 4 to 6 times in various locations to discuss the video, Pete had a lot of ideas of what he wanted in the video. I would say that most of the concepts where Petes ideas and I more or less worked out the visual look. Pete was very much hands on he picked the locations and created many of the props in the video Including the giant cross made from real metal I-beams that he erected in his back yard that we hung him from. There is a lot more boring details that went on before the shoot so ill skip over all that and move on to some facts about the video. A few facts facts about the video: I don’t remember if my video came first or the official one did, I want to say mine was first but I’m just not sure. The video was shot for free and edited for free as well. The band and I did have some incidental stuff but I don’t think it exceeded more that $500, I think the band payed for most of it. The entire video was shot on hi8 using a canon A1 Digital camera. Also for much of it I used a steady cam JR to shoot it, the rest was hand held and sticks. I also used and IMC to capture and do motion on all the stills. Post production was rather involved I transferred everything to 1” tape and edited it on a grass valley edit system with a kaleidoscope and an abacus 64 to do all the layering and vfx. I think the post production took about a month mostly due to the fact I could only work on it at nights and weekends. I was not present the first time Pete saw the video, I sent him a VHS to view of the final edit. No one in the band had been part of the editing process because I kinda had to do it on the down low, back then it cost about $500 and hour to edit in the post house I worked in so I did it when no one was around. There was an article written about the making of the video I even had a copy of it for decades but it got lost over the years. I think it was in Circus magazine but I might be wrong. I can’t remember if I spoke to Pete or Ken their manager but the first thing that was said was “ boy it sure has a lot of special FX in it” from Ken or Peter or was it Ken saying what Peter told him. Whoever said it, it wasn’t meant in a good way. From my memory of the event it was not well received by anyone not the band not the management and not the record company. I was also supposed to do a video for Life of Agony but after this video that went away. Its kinda odd for me to read all the comments praising the video because at the time it was a total flop. I actually never even put it on my editors reel because of how much people thought it sucked. My relationship with the band and Peter pretty much ended after that. I ran in to Pete a few times here and there and at shows he was always very friendly and we had nice exchanges. I went on to have a great career in video production and post production, running post production departments at NBC news and Miramar films eventually having my own production company that I ran for 7 years when I retied from the industry 6 years ago. Thought I never directed another video again I edited a bunch over the years but this was the only one I ever directed. About 3 or 4 years after the video I got a call from en exec at RR records asking if I would sell my rights to the video because Pete really liked it and wanted it on a dvd they where producing I said sure and sold them my rights for $1. I thought about putting in a bunch of personal notes about my time with Pete but I don’t think I will It would bore you guys, except I feel I need to say that Peter Steele was really a great guy the time he took to be polite to me and work on the video with me was one of the best times in my life I mean imagine spending time hanging out with your favorite rock star and having them treat you like an equal, it was awesome. He was an amazing musician and brought much joy to many people me included. Last time I saw Peter was Many years after when I was going to work and I ran in to him on court st in Brooklyn heights, he was going to his sentencing for an assault charge, we spoke for a bit and went on our ways. I miss him very much I like to think he knew how much he meant to people, he was the soundtrack to my youth. I’ll post a play by play of the video soon.

You bs'd ypur way in to his life, you bs'd him and took his time (which is something a person never gets back) you bs'd the video, and made a product he/they did not like despite the many many many many times you used his time as you listened as a fanboi to Peter's ideas about how he wanted his band's video done. I'll add this to the list of things that caused him trust issues and low expectations regarding anything to do with the band.

Back when I was a teenager I had to sneak and listen to Type O negative in private because I was raised by a very strict dad who wouldn't allow me to listen to anything like this. We didnt have cell phones back then so I had to stand by my radio with my hand on the volume knob incase he walked in (since having the bedroom door locked was against the rules)...I miss cassette tapes and CD's. I am actually very grateful my dad was so strict but I still listen to Type O Negative.

I believe in Jesus Christ and God and the whole thing but, you know, I don't shove it down anyone's throat. You know, it's a very private personal thing and faith is really strong and I really want to see my mother and father again. And also I can't believe that somebody like Hitler and Mother Teresa are going to the same place after death. I can't believe that." So I posted this a while ago but it got burried so i figured i re post it So firstly please keep in mind this was shot and cut over 30 years ago or so and my memories of the event are a bit dodgy at this point.
