Tying the Shipman's Buzzer, two ways.

Спорт

Dave Shipman is a hell of an angler and was a fierce competitor in his time. He devised this fly to fish in the surface film and there can be no argument to its effectiveness. It can be tied in a number of different colours ginger, black but for me the claret takes some beating.
I find it really comes into its own around late May to September and early October. Dead simple to tie and worth having in the box.

We fish these a lot in Norway, but with a pearl tinsel ribbing. Works like a charm.

New Dave in the 80,s on the competition circuit he came up to Northumberland a couple of times to stay with me and fish the Tweed and north Tyne with another mate of mine Chris Guthrie....lost touch with them both over the years sadly. I fish these all the time to great effect particularly fiery brown with pearl rib and white deerhair instead of antron.....He told me that another great colour was the shade of golden virginia tabacco.😆

Morning Lindsay I hope you are all well. I remember when the Shipman's first hit the scene and how effective it was …. I tried many colours but preferred black and claret. Its a while since I tied any!! atb Jim

Jim, I think fly patterns very much go in and out of fashion. The Shipman's is just one of the modern classics that should always be in your box.

Lindsay great video as usual. What I really appreciate is the extra detail you provide e.g. why not to use lightweight hooks with a 7 weight rod. It's this that lifts your videos.

I will be tying a few of these now in black and ginger as i lack claret dubbing. Hopefully the Avon trout won''t turn me down with these on offer 😁

I love using shipmans, how small do you go Lindsay?, I've tried B160s on small streams and got some tiny wee brownies but I've gotten the best results with 12s in claret or natural hares ear. Stay safe mate. ATB Chris.

Chris, I have only tried these on Stillwater. I tie them down to #14s. Never thought to try them on the river.

@@lindsayiflyfish I've never got anything big on small streams but it's great fun with them and Griffiths gnats.

Hi Lindsay. Would it be possible to use the yarn instead of cdc with an emerger pattern. Would welcome your opinion. Regards, Derick.

Yes absolutely should work a treat, little bit of floatant on the yarn. I have several patterns like this.
