This fly did amazing for me the other week and I broke my personal record on my favourite pool: 8 consecutive casts and caught 8 fish in a row! Brilliant! Wouldn't believe it if I didn't witness it myself. Thanks for bringing this excellent fly to my attention, Davie!

Great video Davie. I met Ralph Cutter who originated that fly in the Sierras of California. He was a microbiologist who spent hundreds of hours with snorkel and scuba gear observing bugs and insects. I have caught so many fish on that fly it is not even funny in a lot of different areas of the US anyway. It is a great searching fly when you are not sure what might be working. Maybe that is a confidence thing on my part, but it has done me well over the last 20 years. I like the Z lon husk per the original, but that is a great tying job on yours. Thanks for sharing. Love seeing different ways to come at the same fly from different people. Thank you.

Thanks David, I use you're mouse caddis pattern for my duo dry fly, this one will be a lovely alternative. Inoffensive add a shuck to the mouse. Thanks again for being so generous with your talent. My tying has improved so much because of your videos and ideas.

Davie - try tying it as recommended by the originator of the fly, Ralph Cutter of California, USA. He suggested a 2 tone color scheme 2/3 brown to imitate the pupal shuck and and the front 1/3 bright green to imitate the body of the emerging adult. He mentioned in an article that this color scheme improved the catching effectiveness of the fly immensely, nicely done.

You don't need to stick to green and brown, but can vary the colors and sizes to match the adult and pupae of the caddis in the river you're fishing. Rather than tying the shuck a bit around the bend of the hook, I tie mine on a light-wire curved hook, so the end of the abdomen as well as the shuck are submerged; the Daiichi 1130 is my favorite for this really effective fly.

@@gregbelcamino7239 I believe that rational for the two tone body is that all caddis pupa are really bright when escaping the shuck, the trout may key on the brightness of the emerging caddis leaving the dull colored shuck. But as Gary Lafontaine stated, a little brightness goes a long way. Thanks for your comments

There is a lot of interesting things going on with this one when you get down to it, it's just an X caddis with a few adjustments, not a bad thing. I don't know where I will find micro glint here in the states, but I do know where to get zelon. My guess anything similar will work, just don't over do it. I am thinking Olive and Grizzly hackle, it's one of my go to colors on my local stream. As usual Davie, you make tying dead stuff on a hook a real art form.

Hi Peter, If I have to be honest I would be the worst person to ask about stonefly patterns as I rarely tye or even fish them..On my local water there's stonefly but not in the numbers that I've seen fish avidly feeding on them..I do have a couple of videos on stonefly which I have tied for friends that found them to work really well but this was in America and Chile if I remember right....I'm sorry I can't be of more help to you... There's many flies that you could tye that would suit this time of year, I would recommend flies that take on the autumn colours as they are much duller like dark olives and browns both in dry and wet flies.. If you look through my playlists on caddis patterns, cdc flies, wet/soft hackle flies and nymphs many of them will work for you..I hope this is of some help to you... All the very best Davie...

Davie -- Thank you for calling the materials list by its traditional name, "dressing." Many people have decided to call dressings "recipes" recently, and it is annoying to me. While changing things for the better is swell, just changing for the purpose of changing or to sound slick is not. Specifically, I consider "recipe" to be trite--Betty Crocker nonsense!

Most of the work Gary did for Caddis flies he did on the Salmon River, In West Colchester Area of Colchester, CT. I am drinking a cup of coffee right now about 6 miles from that stream. It's not very often that a book changes the way we fly fish, Gary did, and then there was Frank Sawyer, we look at nymph and nymph fishing in a new light, Vince Marinaro, Doug Swisher + Carl Richards come to mind. Then there is KZread, the amount of instruction and information on fly tying and fishing available at our finger tips is un precedented in the history of the sport. Sad to say there is no marker on the river for Gary! I don't know why that is!

Ralph Cutter is the first person i saw to use this pattern. don't know if he designed it but i've seen it labeled as Cutters E/C Caddis. it's a good western fly as it can float well but also works real good on flat water too.
