Been meaning to comment for awhile now. Been in the sport since 88 and I am definently a student of Kellys since then. For all the would. - be experts out there let me say as his long time student He has forgotten more about our sport than most of us even know. Try this - If he says do it then do it. Nothing but results follow, this I have learned, in my opinion He is THE PREMIERE TEACHER of our time and you better be someone like Dave McPhail to come close. Hero worship ? No just a smart bet, his techniques put fish in hand period, this fly is another example.

Thanks for another great video Kelly. With all these great caddis patterns you've done, one of Gary Lafontaine's caddis patterns would be awesome. His dancing caddis pattern still hunts anywhere.

I liked it and it helped me out Kelly. Reminds me of this other caddis pattern where you make three small deer hair wings, dubbing over each stump as you work to the eye. I think I saw Davie tie it. Keep em comin and I'll keep tying em

17:28 Lol, was thinking of the Hedgehog stonelfy pattern right when Kelly mentioned it. An underrated fly in the current age of foam and synthetics. Have had several days on the Madison where changing from a Chubby to a Hedgehog was all it took to get a fish to take. Will have to try the multiple hair wings on caddis imitations now.

Kelly - in a future video could you please show us again how you two tone your dubbing to accomplish a slight rib effect on the body. Also, please comment on Craig Matthews X-caddis pattern based on his premise that it represents an emerging insect , hence, he recommends dubbing a shaggy body to imitate an aspect of chaos generally characterized in the emergent process. Thanks for keeping us enlightened all these years.

I won’t pretend to speak for Kelly, but I’ve fished both versions. They both hunt. Either way you tie the X Caddis it will catch fish.

Thanks Kelly, I really appreciate your patience in showing us the right way to tie.(Don’t rush). When dubbing does it make a difference which direction I twist my thumb and finger? I know the thread tightens when spun to the right to wrap deer hair on hook, but not sure if it matters for dubbing. I’ve tried both directions and pretty crappy either way😂..but that’s just me, sometimes I surprise myself and it comes out ok. Sorry so long and hope this makes sense🤔. Have a great weekend! 🎣

Your point about tightly wrapping the dubbing to to reduce sinking possibility is interesting. I was taught to keep it tight for dries but always thought it was for appearance. In all the classes I’ve taken, including one with Gary LaFontaine, none of the instructors mentioned flotation as a possible issue. Thank you for an instructive video. Ditto to one respondent’s request for some LaFontaine patterns.

Another great video Kelly! I am wondering if UTC 70 denier thread would work well for tying caddis heads, or if it would be too weak to properly set the deer hair. Cheers from the Flathead Valley!

I use UTC 70 and Danville 6/0 all the time to do this method. If you clean the hair properly and get all the underfur out before you set it, the UTC 70 works like charm.

Kelly, how important is the color of the Z Yarn? Thought is to use pink, red, yellow... To make the fly more visible... Thoughts?

For small Elk Hair, X-Caddis, and the Double Wing, try a small pinch of pink or chartreuse Hi-Vis right behind the head of the fly. Just a thought.

Fly Fish thanks! I’m assuming then that changing the tail (shuck) color could cause a negative effect. I will tie a few as you recommend.

@@DieterHaney Dieter, No problem. I was thinking in terms of fishing this straight up stream so you would see the indicator before the shuck. I don't know if a bright shuck would spook the fish, it may. Tie one or two with a bright shuck and see what happens:) If it doesn't spook the fish, and you want to fish the fly across stream to maybe skate it, the bright shuck may help you see it. I was thinking, you could tie a Hi-Vis post at around the 1/3 point behind the eye, as you tie the body in. Using UV resin, pull the post forward at an angle that will penetrate through the wing, and then set the post. When you tie in the wing, on any of these caddis flies, the post will stick through the wing giving you an indicator. It would give you a spot of color in the middle of the wing. I've never tried, but it may work:)

PMDs are great for the 2 weeks they are on the river. Caddis flies are a major food source for over 3 months on the Madison.
