Dick Alfs was a personal friend of mine and created the Hatchmaster pattern. While his fly shop in Ketchum, Idaho was in business, he and his wife Bobbie would get up at 4 in the morning and tie 20 dozen Hatchmasters in various colors and sizes. Dick told me they would all be sold by 6:30am. Dick was one of the best feather benders I ever knew.

One of the best mayfly patterns I 've ever seen - and you need only 5 minutes... ?!! That's magnificent!

Davie, another great pattern, indeed! Trying to tie my flies in the calm way you do it improved my tying tremendously. Thank you for that and keep up the good work. Have fun! Bert

Great tye as always Davie. I came across your tutorial while searching for an Uffe's Killer tutorial. I was surprised to see that nobody on KZread has a tutorial on it! Ive searched on all the normal fly tying groups. I can find the materials and how the fly looks, but no videos anywhere, and I've found others asking the same questions on how to tye it. I believe it's a Norwegian pattern but the materials for it can be found in English. Maybe it's too difficult and that's why there's no tutorials? I reckon a man of your calibre could nail it!?

great simple fly Davie, i would like to see you tie a seaducer saltwater fly. I was tying one last night and spilled a bottle of head cement on my wife's cherrywood dinning table, she's not real happy with me now. it was too hot to tie in my garage here in Texas. anyway thank you for sharing your skills with the world, i have learned a great deal from your vids. peace love fish, daniel

Hi Davie That is a awsome fly the way you used one feather for the whole fly minus the one other feather yo used. Will have to play arround with that idea some.. Thanks for the Great Vids Chance

Brilliant, can't wait to play with this beauty this winter. How small can you tie it down to and still float well? Does it take well to Gink or silicone or do you need a dry floatant? Thanks and All the Best. Mark

Would you strip this fly or figure of eight it?

  • @DavieMcPhail

Hi Dewi Jones, If I was fishing it I would try and let it drift with the flow or the wind but giving it an odd twitch or pull would certainly be worth it... All the very best Davie
