Listening to the story makes me very sad... I am a father's daughter and ever since very little, I have always view my father as a hero and my mother as his backbone. My father is just like the man in the story. He is a man full of ambitions and wisdom, always caring for anyone. I am born into the new generation but I view my parents as the highest place in my life because I know whenever I am in need, they will be the two person who will help me. I wish the younger generation will appreciate their parents more. In the future, I will make sure my kids view my husband as their hero too.

They will not staying with us for long long time. Every second is so precious with the older generations. Their life is so full of tons of stuffs that we never knew about. Like my aunt, she was born during the French war in Laos. We need to keep their history and wrote their history to keep our people alive for long long time. We never get history wrote down at all.

This is such a good story and we all can take so much from this story. I believe that many of us have been in something similar to this but we don’t see the value in something until we lose it then it’s too late. It’s sad when someone on the outside that’s your age knows more about your dad than you as his child. #lifelesson

I can relate to this person. I'm the eldest in the family. When I was young I promised my father that I would buy him a big house since we were poor. He had big hopes for me but as I grew up I became more like this person's story. every time he talks to I always feel as if I'm being scolded. This story has opened my eyes, legit crying from writing this. I never knew how bad I've been acting. as someone young, I always felt I was right but I guess I wasn't. My father is still alive and I'm still in high school but I feel like it's not too late to change.

Older/tradition Hmong dads are much easier to point out our flaws than complement our strengths. My dad is one of them. He pushed a lot of us away just because we made one mistake. For example, my brother got caught stealing school supplies during his youth once and my dad rejected him like forever. My father isolated himself from all of us because none of us are doctors nor lawyers. Btw, most of us are college graduates and a couple of my siblings got their masters but that wasn't good enough. My point is, with all my dad's flaws, we managed to love and respect him throughout those difficult times just because he is our father. Now, he is a very humble father/grandfather around all of us. He recently said "I am rich from the love from my children, and I'm proud of that". In this case, I feel like we showed him how to be loved because he was an orphan at a young age and never had a real father figure in his life. He is now 73 going to be 74 years old soon. Thanks for reading.

Came back to listen to this story. As the oldest daughter of my family, this story saddens me. I too once didn't listen to my dad. My dad has always been the person to humble himself and not really voice his opinions. My mom was the total opposite. It wasn't until the divorce that I realized how much my dad has supported me because I was too focused on getting my mom's acknowledgment. During the divorce, I started to realize how much he's been there for me, and from then on, he's the only one I care about.
