His comments about the quality of the writing on The West Wing are right on point. I have recently started watching it on Netflix. Had never seen it before. Television now has some GREAT writing, and The West Wing was a beginning of this welcome renaissance of fine written words. A show is only as good as its script, and the pauses, where no one says anything, that speak powerful messages.

RIP John Spencer indeed. Seeing him in interview mode you can tell why Leo McGarry is such a great character, there seems to be very little acting involved.

I liked the character of Leo. He sort of became the patriarch of the series and kept everyone on their proverbial toes. I was shocked when the actor John Spencer had passed away during the fifth season.

I really thoroughly enjoy this series and never watched it on TV but I have the series and thrilled with the acting. I would agree that Leo was the patriarch of the members. John Spencer rest in peace your acting was superb!!!!

He's so different from Leo. Less serious, but there's more to it than that. With both him and Janney, I never understood how great their acting was until I saw them out of character for the first time.

An eloquent, educated man. Actors of today could learn a lot from watching him. Gone too soon.

gone much much much too soon; I think about him often and how much more he should or could have been. His epitaph simply reads "John Spencer, Actor" . . . 🫂
