Two Whale Sharks Swim into Each Other at Georgia Aquarium

Hey Guys - sorry that I am not publishing my video on the alchohol canon today - I accidentally called it a propane canon in the video - and I need to re - record.
For now, please enjoy this video of whale sharks swimming into each other.

    It's a really beautiful sight to see in person. For those wondering, this window is only a small glimpse into this 6.5 million gallon exhibit. The keepers of these rescue whale sharks change the pattern of the water current so that the whale sharks feel and act like they would in an ocean. And no, the glass (which is actually an acrylic resin) won't break. It's almost two feet thick. In this room that have a block of it to show you how thick it really is an talk about the install process.

    such a shame they can’t be introduced back into the wild. whale sharks have a much shorter lifespan in captivity, they simply need more room than can be possibly offered. they experience far more stress in captivity and don’t grow nearly as large as they would in the wild either

    It should be noted that the Georgia Aquarium bought the Whale sharks from Taiwanese fishermen who intended to butcher and sell them on the fish market. So instead of these beautiful creatures being killed and eaten they are being housed at the top aquarium in the world and are the first of their species to be studied in captivity. Also the tank is massive. I don't know if it's the biggest in the world but it is incredibly impressive. Edit: okay wow I didnt realize I had a comment with all these likes. Cool. So backstory is I went on a tour at the aquarium where we got to see the tank from the other side, watch them feed the sharks and sea turtles and what not. They litterally have to paddle out in boats to get in position to feed them. The tank is designed in a way that they have the ability to move in novel patterns and directions, i.e. they cant just swim in a circle all day forever, which is good because it allows them to make decisions and stimulates their minds. They feed them the same thing they would eat in the wild. There are places they can go without public observation. It's very cool and very educational. Aquariums like the Georgia aquarium are basically research labs that use the tourism bit to raise money for science and conservation efforts. They're contributing A LOT more to the environment and these species as a whole through research than if they had bought and released the animals. Plus it raises awareness and educates the public. You can tell people "the whale shark is the biggest fish in the world" and it's just kinda like "okay cool". But when you watch those things swimming above you, 60+ ft long, it inspires you and you grow more complete as a human and you love the Earth more. They're not there for entertainment, they're there for education and research and science and to demonstrate the connection we have with the world. Sure you could buy it back from a fisherman and release it, but that dosent do any good. Itll probably just get caught again. And you cant even blame the fisherman, hes just trying to feed his family with what he has, no ones getting rich killing whale sharks. By keeping them and learning about them, you can help change policy and learn what measures need to be taken to protect them and preserve them in the wild. I dont really think the sharks bumping in to each other is a sign of mistreatment or anything like that... they care deeply about these animals and do everything in their power to make sure they are well taken care of and in a stimulating environment.

    LMAO I feel bad for laughing at this, since they are probably just too crowded in there...I can't believe they squeezed 4 whale sharks into 1 tank. We're talking fish the length of a school bus here. Or maybe they're just farsighted? Their eyes are like 3 feet apart.

  • @grass7864

    @grass7864

    monokhem Well, you see, it becomes a question of sustainability. For example, a common goldfish may get the optimal health benefits from living in a tank of 20 gallons or more. It is very easy and relatively cheap to supply your goldfish with a 20 gallon tank. Of course, housing more goldfish would require a bigger tank. Let's say, 40 gallons. Still doable, of course, but suddenly a lot more to ask. At least it is easy to mimic the natural habitat of a small, hardy, freshwater fish. Every species has it's strengths and weaknesses, after all! Now, let's say that the optimal tank size for a singular whale shark is a cool 10 million gallons of water. Great! All we need to do is acquire, and continually maintain, that 40 million gallon tank for at least the average natural lifespan of those fish. But...that's expensive! And as a pelagic fish, one the size of a bus, that swims dozens of miles a day, with the tremendous dietary need of literal tons of krill, that healthy natural environment JUST MIGHT be harder to recreate than that of, say, a goldfish, or even a smaller, more sedentary shark. Wow! It seems that those small sharks aren't NEARLY as suseptible to neglect as those big old whale sharks! Maybe we shouldn't be just as concerned about those goldfish and little slow sharks! Because that would be stupid and show a lack of understanding of the subject at hand. It's really quite simple. When you think about it.

  • @grass7864

    @grass7864

    monokhem I didn't realize that the Georgian economy was cripplingly dependent on whale shark displays. That's sad and shocking. Quite possibly the real tragedy here. That "best veterinary care" quip reminds me of the orcas at Sea World. Those vets did the best they could by those animals. But the whales get sick and die very young nonetheless. Because some animals are ill suited for captivity due to their biology. Which was the whole point that you inevitably missed. Sucks. Perhaps the whale sharks are fine. Maybe not. Only Georgians are desperate enough to take that chance, I guess. It's going to be devastating for them when the damn sharks eventually die. You must lie awake every night, petrified by the weight of your overwhelming concern.

    Is there any chance they will be released in the future? It is a good thing that they were rescued and are being used for research, but living in a tank could severely shorten their life spans. It honestly sucks that people hunt and try to eat such rare and beautiful creatures. And just so you know, I am aware of the illegal shark hunting and finning going on. I just hate to see them in a tank. I know it is large, but there are four of them and it just isn't the same as if they were in the wild. Thank you for responding though. I was unaware of the circumstances that lead them there.

    That's a lie, we visited the Georgia Aquarium in 2015 and they said that they only keep them in captivity until they're a specific size and then release them back. They get too big to keep in captivity and they can die due to the stress. The ones in the video aren't fully grown, those are relatively young whale sharks. When we went, there were only 2. I am sure they're going to release those ones soon.

    well, we do have the biggest aquarium in the world! and to those who are wondering, they don't "abuse" or "mistreat" the sea animals. i live in atlanta and i go here a lot. most of the creatures there have been rescued, and then they get released back into the wild when they're healthy and well. if they're way too sick or hurt to be on display, they get nursed behind the scenes until they're decent enough to be shown, and then they're released into the wild. same thing with our zoo.

    tomtalker2000 I do believe that is a aquarium down in Georgia that is home to, not the biggest aquarium, but the biggest tank in the world ever to be made. I said a video a while back of someone doing a dive in there and he said he couldn't stand in a spot and see two walls at once because of the size. he also said in the video that aquarium was more like the ocean then he ever thought because if the size and how natural the sea life was
