Is it possible to run two ram pumps in series? I connect two 1/2" ram pumps one after the other to see if they will both run and if the second pump has more pressure.

    why would you think that wouldn't work? Pressure is pressure So if two or three feet of drop is enough to operate one ram pump.. why would the even higher pressure water coming out of that ram pump not be enough to operate a second one.. when it comes to pressure? Now Flo might be a problem to maintain.. But if you can push water up a hill then it has more pressure than your head pressure on the first pump. So you just need to make sure you can provide the gallons per minute necessary as you definitely have the pressure. Have you ever noticed a ratio of head height, to water lost? In other words if you have 80 ft of drop instead of 2 ft of drop, does less water flow through the valve before it slapped shut because of the higher pressure. I am just curious if the flow and gallons per minute remains the same no matter what the pressure.. my theory is less gallons per minute at higher pressure would slam the valve shut because it's the same amount of energy with higher pressure and lower flow. Just curious if you've tested that

    I can't see any useful applications for this configuration as of yet but i am interested in seeing the outcome of your proposal. Also try catching the waste from the first in a bucket and run a smaller off that.

    Try this: 1-1/4" pump with a long drive pipe at the bottom of the hill feeding at least 20ft of drive pipe into a 1/2" pump. You want the maximum head pressure into the first pump, the second pump needs no head pressure generated by elevation and can be flat. 7:1 and 7:1 multiplied together I bet you can get 49:1 output. Don't forget to air up the innertube in the second pump extra because it will be operating at much greater pressures.

    Pushing water uphill would be a challenge, you don't need any pump to make it flow downhill. Nice day with the kids, congratulations.

    Add a storage tank to each pump on the input side. When each tank fills up. Then start the next pump. Make a reservoir for waste water collection at each pump. So waste water could feed a smaller system. Nothing is ever going to be perfect but you are very diligent. If there is a solution you are the right person to find it. Great video.

    Neat, thanks for running this test. Direct piping them in series like this is not much different from your test of having 2 waste valves on a single pump (April 2018) You've already tested a 1-1/4 pump filling the supply bucket for a 1/2 pump (April 2015) to get 2-stage lift to pump higher. And you've tested catching the discharge from the waste valve to run a second pump (Jun 2020) and get more volume of water delivered. I think all bases have finally been covered.

    To me the best scenario would be the 1st pump near your source supplying water to a tank for the 2nd pump up the hill near the max lift. Then the waste from the higher pump can be cycled back to the source of the bottom. I think one could quite successfully run a relay that way with the pumps scaling down. Water is fast becoming an important resource.

    I'm sure your experiments are good, I assume in this case you are in a scenario you pump to one place then use the other pump to send water further, assuming one ramp pump can not send that far enough, otherwise doesn't have sense one pump delivery feeding a second pump, there can be another scenarios also, one pipe feeding two pumps and one delivery outlet, that would awesome, more pressure, more water. Good job. I have never done it but I'm learning a lot when I go back to my new house so I can implement it.

    Thank you for all the information on this stuff! Back when I was interested in it, before the web, these pumps were pure magic to me. You have clarified a lot and your experiments are awesome. Maybe you have tried this but, what about a lager delivery pipe to capitalize flow loss and the ram effect? Also, what about a daisy chain? Pump up to a tank and then have that tank run another pump to yet another tank up higher, etc. You would have to figure out a way to keep air out of the downstream (upstream) pumps or gauge the flow somehow. I have never messed with these but always been fascinated. Thanks again for taking the time to provide these experiments and videos. Please continue!

    I have a question. I have watched you enough to kind of understand how one pump works. The pump works off of the pressure from gravity-fed water going into the pump causing the pump to push water out and even uphill at a higher pressure. That is causing backpressure for the pump to stay charged. With the second pump being lower than the first pump, the backpressure is lost when the second pump cycles. If a pump is supposed to push water uphill, shouldn't the second pump be uphill? The first pump should supply the second pump with the same water pressure as if it was gravity fed. Does this sound correct?

    Hi SETH. My camp ram pump stopped by just getting slower and slower. On investigation I found that the bicycle tube in the PVC pressure tank had gone flat. Back together now and await results. OVER 1/2 a KM pumping water.Thanks for all your video's, and your helping me, better understand how these work.:)

    That is a nice long delivery pipe! Sometimes you can simply drain the pressure tank and make sure it sits upright.

    The first pump Hass to have a reservoir at the end to increase the pressure to pump the second one and from my trying it it pushes it harder and higher but not a lot thanks for the video.

    A ram pump is designed as a tuned system. The reverse pulse (up the delivery pipe) to the intake standpipe requires a particular length to operate efficiently if at all. The velocity of the pulse wave and cycle period determines the drive pipe length. a rule of thumb is a 10:1 ratio of water used to water delivered so you should expect to get very little water at high pressure delivered out of the second ram pump in this configuration. Consider shortening the second drive pipe and limiting the waste valve stroke accordingly. Thank you for the interesting experiment!

    Seth, what you need to do is send the water down 1 meter and flow it into the double ram pump which should allow you to send the water up, let’s say 4 meters. Then you use the flow from that water to drop one meter and feed a third ramp pump and send the water up an additional 4 meters…..for a total of 6 meters. In other words: the flow from the new water source created by the double ramp pump should be sufficient to power the 3rd ramp pump.

    I'm also thinking to put the second RAM pump at the same height or somewhat uphill from the first pump, and to have the second one be a smaller size. The output of these pumps is higher pressure but lower flow rate than the input. Maybe for testing use a flexible hose between the 2 pumps so you can vary the position of the second pump more easily.

    The second pump is using the relief valve as the open air source every time the first one cycles. The theory on ram pumps is the pump's lift is proportional to the amount of water drop in height, in this case, the source to the first pump needs a longer drop or a large source pi9pel not a larger pump.

    What would happen if you ran pump #1 uphill to a reservoir to “restart” the ram pump system again? Basically running two ram pumps in tandem but not quite directly connected to the same pressure system. Two fully independent ram pumps that just happen to be using the same water but not the same pressure. 2’ initial head pressure leads to Uphill 30’ down 2’ from that point should gain you another 30’ lift, yes?!? So hanging another bucket where your hose ends 2’ above ground, connect another ram should gain you another 30’ of lift.

    I think you should add a buffer tank in between the two pumps like a section of 2 feet of 4 inch pipe and let the pressure build up before you open the valve.

    What about using the first to create more head for the second via an intervening reservoir at a higher height, giving the second the chance to move the resulting water higher than either could in direct series?

    Update your bucket with a flow valve to a bigger blue barrel 50gal and level it with a 45 angle pipe. Increase the pipe size by half at least, so if 1" bump up to 1.5". Create more gravity pressure up stream and increase flow dynamics of the larger pipe reducing down.

    the check valve is most likely not fully closing, and bleeding down to the second pump. i believe you would need a stand pipe inbetween first and second pump, with the height of the stand pipe above the initial head. secondly, you must run a larger first pump. thirdly, the fist pump needs back pressure, against the check valve in order to work properly. see above.

    I've seriously considered collecting the waste water off of a 1" ram pump, collecting that water in a trough of some sort, and running it downhill into the drive side of a 3/4" or smaller pump, possibly with a bucket intake somewhere in-between.

    I’ve put way to much thought into this. Like what if you create a tromp system before the ram pump so the water hammer increases the air pressure gathered then use the air to air lift pump the waste water back to the top?

    @@LandtoHouse I bought one of your 1/2 inch off your website and I’m going to try what I said. I’d love help testing this though... Water source > insert a Venturi pump to suck air into the drive pipe > pass the drive pipe through an air collection tank > then the ram pump. (Mr Teslonian achieved this part.) after the ram pump use the air collection to send water back to original storage tank.

    Just curious... Maybe it's been done already... How well would it work to take some sort of ram pump setup, fill a large maybe 1-2k gallon tank on top of a hill, then take a small hydro electric setup, place in inline above the ram pumps so it is then a self recirculating system that generates a continuous flow of water as well as electricity? Thanks for your time, I'd love to hear your thoughts! Side note, maybe have two pumps in parallel and only hydro in line with one?

    It is interesting that it does partly cycle correctly. Maybe you could look at a large pump feeding an elevated tank giving your more drop for a second small pump? That's a lot of effort, but if your supply is less than 1m above your lowest point it might still make it possible to pump a very small amount of water up a larger hill.

    My idea is to have the second pump at a slightly higher or even elevation to the first one. it runs off of the back pressure from the pumping action which is lost as the water flows down hill. Good luck

    Thank you. I have found that you can run a smaller pump directly from the waste valve of a larger pump. That was pretty cool but it does not increase the output lift height.

    You need 4:1 in diameter to work well. And the water not need to drop. The second pump will cick faster too. But the 20 foot pipe is required between the pumps. The output should be around 40 - 75psi or 3-5 bar. All these from a 3 foot drive pipe elevation. The output water is only 10% of the original input. For an 2inch input pipe will take 14 gallona minute and deliver 30% yo the second 0.5inch ram pump. The final output will be around 3 liter or 3/4gallon. Theoretically it should work with a 1 inch pump too, but it just fit to each other.

    what if you had a tank just before the top pump, and had the top pump draw from the that tank. That way it you could go up a higher hill farther away.     As the water is running down hill it is basically a syphon, you don't get anything from the pumps .

    I did not read all the other comments, my stroke prevents my reading... The reason waste valve 2 cycles but wast valve 1 above it dose not as its creating a vacuum pulling it down. That also is the cause of all the additional air pockets. At least that is my best guess. Its sucking water and air from valve 1.

    I think it would make more sense to have in series a ram pump, water collection, then another ram pump. That way your watering stations are also water sources? Dunno, just thinkjng

    Seems that there are too many cooks in the kitchen lol. Fluids stay in equilibrium when in a closed system, so when the drive pipe is closed the lower pump doesn't build pressure; when the higher pump is cycling the lower pump builds pressure ONLY when the drive pump of the lower ram is closed. Open the higher pump so pressure builds, then once the pressure is high enough open the delivery valve in the lower one.

    I see that you've done many configurations and variations on the standard Ram pump system.. have you tried reclaiming the Wastewater? What I mean is if you have enough flow for an inch or inch and a quarter can you have that waste water drain into a bucket that feeds into 1/4 or 1/2 inch RAM pump?

    Series ram pumps. Is it possible to have the second ram pump drive pipe cut shorter or nearer to the 1st ram pump? The drive line of the 2nd pump will then be having a higher input water pressure and therefore the delivery pipe of the 2nd pipe will have a greater flow rate.

    Please put a reservoir after the first pump, then use that toilet flush velve and bullkok, except use the bullok to flush it, periodically opening the velve, so the second pump works efficiently and can do work. 🤔 Hmm I don't know if it will suck air through the flush valve, might need to adjust it closes before the tank empties.

    could you run two ram pumps side by side but, put a arm valve or timer arm between the two waste valves so when one valve closes the other is open? that way the pulse rate of pumped water is twice as fast. just a thought

    Your initial pump should have been at lowest elevation, the distance between pumps is all friction loss. Give it another go I’m curious

    It stands to reason that you'd need twice the size of pump on top because your only dealing with half the water volume. Because a ram pump waste half it's water .the thing I'm looking for is making use of the wasted water ... if you could capture the waste in a gravity tube ?

    I have a creek with little head height, i need to measure to get an exact amount, but I was wondering, could you connect a pipe to the waste outlet to create suction increasing velocity and pressure? Idea: 3x Smooth 90's to turn oven then downstream and end with a "large" bell, 1" to 3" connector with 3" facing downstream, on the end to create a point of low pressure

    The only fair system to set up, would be the exact same system, twice. Two supplies, two feeds. Two returns. All sizes equal. But then we already know that would double the amount of delivered water. Any other setup is going to be using two identical pumps and getting less than double the delivery.

    Land House, I live near a lake and the area is flat. Can I dig a hole to place the pump, then make a siphone to get waste water out of the hole back into the deep part of the lake?

    WHAT IF YOU FEED THE SECOND PUMP FROM THE WAST VALVE OF THE FIRST PUMP ? YOU MIGHT USE A 3/4 " PUMP TO FEED A 1/2" PUMP. I WONDER WHAT THE OUTPUT OF THE 2 WOULD BE THEN ? ALSO COULD YOU LEAVE A OPENED STAND PIPI AT THE TOP OF THE 1/2" FEED PIPE BY THE WAST VALVE SO IT WILL NOT HYDROLOCK ?

    i dont think u should have put the second pump lower than the first. try puting the second uphill and if posible smaller diameter pipe than the first in order to increase total elevation of pumped water by the combo.

    There is no point in the first pump, as it is uphill from the second pump. Just removing that pump would increase the pressure on the second pump. to put 2 of these in series and make sense,, the first pump should be lowest. It should pump uphill to a reservoir similar to the first pump's reservoir. That should feed the second pump to give it pressure. The second pump them carries the water farther uphill. You could also capture the waste water, from the second pump, and feed it back down to the reservoir of the first pump.

    Still think having a twice as long source pipe would be better and a second system to carry it higher if needed.

    Isnt the whole idea to send water to a higher elevation? Having water flow downhill and create a small amount of pressure seems kinda normal. U said the drop from the bucket to the first pump was 3 feet but the water was only getting pumped less than a foot high… Also shudnt the waste water valve be downstream from the air tank? That way when the waste water valve shuts from the flow of water, the resulting water hammer reverses flow and has more force on the air tank.

    I have a 550 gallon water tank at the top of my hill. I want to install a hydropower generator with a 2 inch drive pipe .like the one you installed. The water from the discharge tube to ram pump or pumps. To return to the water tank. The discharge and return should be equal. The loss of water from the waste valve is a concern. Is it possible to recover the water from the waste valve to put it back into the system?

    Your water reservoir is a bucket which is unable to create pressure on the basis of its small volume you must use a bigger water reservoir

    Water pressure is based on water height not volume. The bucket is a little over 1' tall so that adds around .433psi

    Hi sir, I had made a Ram pump of 1" . I would like to pump the water up to 60 feet hight and 500 meter long . Please tell me the head pressure hight and dry pipe length require for that. Please reply the msg .
