Longines should be on the same playing field as Rolex…seriously. The heritage is undoubtedly there. For some reason, Swatch is keeping the brand down, relatively speaking.

I’ve been wearing the Ranger on a rubber strap for about 4 months. Super comfortable it flies under the radar. The avocado color grows on you. I didn’t appreciate it when I first got it, but I enjoy looking at the simple dial now. It’s a completely understated watch, and that’s the beauty of the design.

i agree. It works well with a lot of different strap options. The green isn’t as noticeable in person, but you can pull it out if you switch up the band. I keep it on the bracelet most of the time though. It’s got a quality look while being no nonsense.

Swatch about 20 years ago prioritized Asia quite a bit which certainly was not a dumb decision by any means, but it has left some of their brands to be overlooked in the states. Longines is one of them though that has a significant trajectory as they continue to gain the appreciation they rightfully deserve.

I have more expensive, more "interesting" looking watches... but the Ranger, is the watch I wear more than anything else. It's simple some would say boring... but it's understated, highly legible, doesn't need to be babied and pretty much works with any strap you throw on it. I've taken it up mountains for hiking and skiing, camping, used it whilst skateboarding, swimming and even just for work in the office... The "fauxtina" lume that everyone gets offended by is really nice at night time as it glows rather than illuminates and the best part is that it lasts all night. This is one of those watches that looks a bit meh in the photos but once you've lived with it, it makes sense why Tudor did it.

First off, as always, great production and insight. That same insight helped me pick my first two watches, the Orient Kamasu and Brew Metric, which I couldn’t be happier with. As for these two featured pieces, I really like the Longines. In its price point, I think it dresses up better than any other aviation watch. Also, I give a lot of respect to Longines for recognizing what Watch enthusiasts want in sizing but also not swinging the pendulum too far.

Since you mentioned Orient, the prices of these pieces remind me of the TREMENDOUS value of the Orient Star Sports Outdoor (RK-AU0204L). For those who don't need a prestigious brand name, the Orient Star is VERY similar in look and specs (not COSC) of the Tudor for a fraction of the cost. Unfortunately, it's hard to find these days.

I bought a Ranger on Teddy's video recommendation, and it is by far my favorite watch. I love the understatement. It isn't a watch that random people look at and wonder If I spent 3 grand on it. They just see a watch. This is a watch for ME. I know what its value is, and I appreciate seeing it on wrist. And when someone that knows comments, it jsut makes it cool that another watch aficionado sees it. But for me, this is the perfect watch.

The little details of the Longines make it for me - the way the diamond on the seconds hand lines up with the diamond on the dial, the applied elements, the case finishing, etc. just make it feel more premium, without being flashy, compared to the Tudor.

I bought a Longines Spirit 40mm before Christmas. It's an excellent watch and incredible value. I bought mine (black dial on Leather) in a UK sale from an AD - at a £600 discount. I hadn't planned on buying one that day, but when I saw the price, I ordered one. I'm a big guy and my usual sweet spot is 41-42 - but this 40 fits well and looks good. It's keeping excellent time and the black dial helps "subdue" the black date window - almost to the point of invisibility. The 21mm lug width may worry some but I've had a couple of straps made by a Vietnamese guy I found on Etsy - and most 22mm leather straps will fit a 21mm watch. To sum up, I think it's an excellent watch that stands comparison with other brands whose watches are skating by on the coat tails of "The Emperor's New Clothes"

Very nice review as usual. I like the way you break down the elements that make the choice of a watch to wear. As a Longines (Zulu) owner I can highly recommend it as it is rich of nice details that locates it closer to a nice Seamaster than a Tudor. Very versatile, with the anti reflex domed sapphire and the date complication (apart from the GMT). I get somehow the feeling that with the Longines you can get more watch for the money. I feel however that among the honorable mentions you could include the Steinhart. Even if they make lots of Rolex homages, the substance is there. They make very sturdy watches and quite accurate too. They even have a model made of 904L steel and they even have a vintage GMT model where there is actually lumen on the numbers on the bezel! Keep up the good work!

I like the look of the Spirit, but I own the Ranger. Its fantastic bracelet and extreme legibility are key, but I also have a thing for the Explorer 1016 look. And I did an expedition to Greenland recently, so Tudor's hokey backstory for the watch holds some allure. For me, Ranger is a huge upgrade over my decent 40mm Smiths Everest with the lousy bracelet. I understand the "boring dial" comments, but that's not my day-to-day experience with the Ranger. IRL the numerals and indices don't register as yellow-green as they seem on camera. It's a gem.

Nice job evaluating these. I have one constructive criticism. I’m an old collector, engineer, and amateur watch mechanic. One thing no one seems to recognize about Omega, Longines, and other in the swatch group- is that these original companies all went bankrupt, shut down, and the name was resurrected years later by Nicholas Hayek in the 1980’s. The highly skilled personnel, equipment, etc. DOD not transfer. The name and in some cases, patents did. I applaud that the names live on, but it’s not the same as if the companies survived intact.

I was cross shopping these at my AD and was so torn I couldn't decide. But as soon as I went to unscrew the crown on the Spirit, and saw that it was push pull, the decision was easy. This will be an everyday do everything adventure watch for me, and the lack of peice of mind in the crown was a total killer for the Spirit. The Ranger is a fantastic watch that suffers from Nickback syndrome. It got cool to hate it early on, and people now trash it because "it doesn't quite look right". I don't understand it. Owner of a Ranger here: I really think you need to experience the watch in person before making up your mind between the 2. It looks like a completely different when experiencing it in person. The Tudor wears much nicer on my wrist compared to the Longines, and to me the Longines is a more contemporary look while the Ranger goes for a more historical look reminiscent of the vintage explorers and even the old Ranger, so giving it raised polished indicies like many are suggesting wouldn't fit that idea very well. I also promise the green is not as ghastly in person 😂.

This is a difficult choice Teddy but ultimately I'd have to agree. Longines have certainly upped there game over the years with a lot of the brands movements all be it manufactures by ETA are exclusive to Longines from the Swatch group. The dial design is also quite incredible and oozes depth and class. I must confess to being a fan of the Tudor brand and without doubt the Ranger is a brilliant entry into the 'in house' chronometer options for the brand. I do agree that these two watches have slightly different target markets with the Ranger aiming at a easy readable more tool watch vibe with the Spirit looking at the more versatile end. The 37mm Spirit would probably take my cash out of the two but I think I would still yearn for the Ranger at some point. Right now I have the BB36 black dial (smile text as it has a 3rd party movement) that I'm more than happy with, small yet elegant but versatile as well not to mention easy servicing. I doubt I'll be looking to make another purchase of either of these options anytime soon.

I’m not really into either, but I question whether the Longines’ movement is really as good as the Tudor one. I am also not sure about “optionality” as a category; I can definitely see that mattering for a dealer, but for watch enthusiasts what matters is that we love a particular dial, and when faced with multiple alternatives, it actually turns to diminish are satisfaction with our choice (see “the paradox of choice”). Still love the videos, and the ‘Stache!

I was wearing my Tudor Ranger and on vacation in Taiwan and the Longines Spirit caught my attention yesterday in a serious way at the mall. I wasn’t sure if it’s the vacation syndrome that everything just looks beautiful and/or in the shopping mode but the blue 37mm pilot watch just look amazingly stunning on a blue leather strap.

Man,, this would be a hard choice as I love them both. But if I go by my gut feeling, I lean towards the Longines Spirit. To me it looks like a more versatile design which can be worn with a suit and tie or with jeans and a polo shirt. I am particularly attracted to the dial design, which has depth as well as is available in some beautiful colors. The Tudor Ranger, as you said, has a flat dial and the case and bracelet are mainly brushed, so it has a more casual look to it, more like a fleiger watch design. But had you been comparing the Longines to a Tudor Black Bay, I don't think it would be a contest for me, the Black Bay would win. BTW, while watching this video, I'm wearing my Longines Flagship watch. Very dressy, it was my first introduction to Longines and hopefully not my last!

My 40mm Longines spirit L3.810.4.03.6 with the matte green dial has a screw in crown. I am confused about that, but I don't know about the 37mm version. For my money the Longines is the better watch. The only issue I have is the lugs are looong when it is on the bracelet. The bracelet quick change system is great though. In a few seconds I have the bracelet off and a green suede strap on. This has caused me to buy multiple leather strap options, and all of them work great with it. Just a beautiful and very versatile watch. Lots of polished shiny bits on the dial with applied indices. It is clearly a better watch.

I've owned a longline spirit 37 over the 2m. Black dial. Beautiful watch. I love it. Very comfortable to wear. Very accurate. Only +-1s/day on my wrist. Hard to find this quality in that price range. My wrist is small so 37mm fits perfectly. If I needed to pick one complaint, the antireflective glass gets fingerprints and smudge very easily. I wish they didn't put the coating on the outside... But otherwise it's a great watch!

Hi Teddy, thanks for the lovely video. First thing, Longines Spirit is a screw-in crown so for the water resistance it should be definitely a tie. So it should be 8 to 6 :). And for one of the comments i've seen, when you're stucked between a Longines and any other brand, like me nost of the people are going with Longines. Like i did for Nomos Club Campus 39 vs Longines Spirit 40, Longines Conquest vs ChrisWard, Legend Diver vs Ball Engineer etc. It somehow always catches on the last point and gets you. Hard to avoid that they are producing exceptional pieces within accessible price ranges.

Having a bb36 and spirit37, the spirit is just the better watch, the case finishing is so impressive and fun to look at with the polished and brushed parts, the eta movement inside really impressed me running a +-1s/d with 72hr pr, only things I can criticize is the jangling bracelet and the lugs being slightly too long for my liking. The bb36 is definately getting its ass kicked by the spirit.

I have the Spirit 37 (black on brown leather) and the bb36 (black with bracelet). The Spirit 37 wears bigger on the wrist, most probably because of the long-ish lug-to-lug length. I hate that it is not a screw-down case. On the other hand, The bb36 can be a 1 watch collection. I am eyeing on getting the Rolex Exp 1 36mm, but I noticed it wears bigger than the previous 36mm model as the case more "muscle" -- something I don't really like. On the odd side, the bracelet start at 19mm and tapers further down to 14mm. I have also been lusting after a IWC Le Petite Prince (a 36mm pilot watch) with the silver dial, but am wondering if it will be redundant with the Spirit 37 in my modest collection (same goes for getting the Explorer 1 and a bb36).

I’ll offer that if you want to do these comparisons, then rather simply applying binary check marks, some sort of factor weighting would improve the quality of the recommendation (this is done in business and government regularly: essentials and desirables along with weight factor for desirables). Giving a check to an established watch when the other watch had its first model release only a few months ago is dubious as well. Better is the discussion following, where the potential buyers might choose one over the other. It would also be worth discussing your accuracy findings with the two watches as you do during your reviews, only to compare to the manufacturers’ stated goals. We know for example that Tudor’s expectations for their watches is far better than the COSC standard (apologies I don’t know Longines). It’s an interesting comparison because I would not intuitively cross shop these two brands; I perhaps wrongfully place TAG, Tissot and Longines together. Thank you for another great review Teddy.

If I was looking for value at a much cheaper price for a GADA I'd pick a Seiko Alpinist/Baby Alpinist/Alpinist 1959 reissue over the Hamilton Murph, and if it had to be a Hamilton (unless you're aa Interstellar fan) I'd get a Khaki Field which is where best Hamilton value lies.

I was looking for a watch to hold me over in the classic category until I get the Rolex explorer. Initially I took a hard look at the ranger but in the end that dial was too flat and plain, maybe if the numerals were raised and the text a bit different. I’d maybe buy the Tudor at $1k but not 3k. I got the blue 37 Longines and seeing it live the watch is even more beautiful and the size is probably the most perfect I have. The 37 does wear like a 38 for sure. For more versatility I’d recommend the black dial but the blue is way more beautiful. I tried on the 40mm spirit but the date window placement wasn’t great and the length of the lugs didn’t fit right and almost made the dial look oval. Highly recommend this piece, 6.75 in wrist here. I wound up at bucherer and tried the Rolex Explorer 39 vs 36. 36 felt tiny while 39 too big for that style watch. I was a bit surprised how much the spirit 37 is perfectly sized for the style.
