Adventures In Reach (AIR) hopes to expand what adventures are possible for you, teach the skills to help make that happen, inspire you to get out of a rut, and increase your confidence outdoors. We encourage you to challenge yourself and try something new, from a backyard adventure to an expedition. Although all outdoor adventures are fair game, AIR generally focuses on small sailboat or Sunfish sailboat sailing and camping, rappelling, knots, ropes, hammock camping, outdoor adventures with dogs, compass orienteering, canoeing, wilderness travel, outdoor gear, camping, hiking, and cold weather camping and survival.

Is there any advantage to doing both counter clockwise? I thought you should add a clockwise hitch to make it hold better?

It doesn't matter which way you go as long as you go the same way both times. It you go one way, then the other you'll end up with a girth hitch. There's no need to add a third wrap since this knot just tightens harder the more you pull.

Question, is there really any scenario where I’d want to use this knot over the taut line?

Yes! I use it all the time to tighten down on things like...tying one end of a rope around a tree to hang a tarp in camp...quickly tying my boat to a dock that doesn't have any cleats...securing the end of a ratchet strap after tightening down my canoe or sailboat to my car/trailer...tying a bunch of grass or bushes together to affix my tarp or tent to... I know a ton of common and specialty knots, but I bet I use the taut line more than anything else. You could use the taught line instead, but that is specifically meant for adjusting vs gripping objects. I hope that helps.

Absolutely. That's a good way to look at it as long as the end is tied away from the object.

Two half hitches by itself doesn't include a round turn. A round turn with two half hitches does. They have different uses. Without the round turn it cinches up on it's own. With the r I und turn it slips less once cinched down.

Most people tie this wrong by tying the second half hitch the opposite way to the first

That is a common mistake. I've found that peoples' brains work different. Some people are good with names, dates, knots, physical skills, perception, etc.
