FYI, the instruments used are: 4:40: Shamisen 7:02: Koto (horizontal harp) 7:05: Shakuhachi (flute) The way she sings in the second song is called "Shigin", a traditionnal way of reciting poetry.

Always love the reaction to the beautiful Bene! Yuko (singer) was the catalyst for the forming of the band. A primary purpose in creating the band was to generate an interest in Japanese traditional musical instruments. They have toured the US and there are several excellent interviews on KZread.

Beni plays a Tsugaru-style Futozao (Thick Neck Size) Shamisen. The sharp, flashy style of tsugaru was played in the streets by the bousama (blind musicians) who developed a more lively style. Blind musicians at the beginning of the 20th century, including Shirakawa Gunpachiro, Takahashi Chikuzan and sighted players like Kida Rinshoei developed a new style of play based on traditional folk songs ("min'yo"), but with a lotImprovisation and eye-catching finger work. This style - known as Tsugaru-Jamisen, after the native region in northern Honshu - is relatively popular today in Japan. The virtuoso tsugaru jamisen style is sometimes compared to bluegrass banjo. The classic pick is called Bachi. The koto is a Japanese zither and the national instrument of Japan. The bamboo flute is called a shakuhachi and the second drum kit is a wadeiko The singer's very broad vibrato is typical of Shigin, a traditional poem concert style.Suzuhana Yuko, the singer of the Wagakki Band, is a certified teacher for Shigin. The style of dance that Yuko performs is called Kenshibu ('Sword and Poetry Dance') This is a category of Japanese interpretive dances performed to traditional music with poetry. Kenbu refers to dances that are performed with the help of a sword. and Shibu dance with one or more hand fans called Sensu / Ogi (folding fans). .

I'm so glad that Dana's Faith has opened my eyes to a brand new group (for me) which is totally cool, that I am going to try at the end of this comment to make them glad too! I did not realize you were doing international songs/groups on Mondays, though I approve whole heartedly as I have always felt music is an international language all its own. Your reactions are great and your personalities are wonderful. You fill the world with joy and I truly appreciate that! My gift to you today is to let you know about a little Canadian band called Blood Sweat and Tears (hey, Canada is international, eh?) and one of their songs called "You Make Me So Very Happy". It is a wonderful song and it sums up my feelings about the two of you and your channel perfectly! Give it a try one of these Mondays!! Cheers, from the Great White North!

Fantastic Japanese pronunciation. Well done. With that said, as someone that came of age in the 70's, I felt that no country rocked harder or better than the U.S.but now Japan is kicking ass. Wouldn't it be cool to see Waggaki, Band-Maid and Babymetal on the same bill? In Waggaki I hear Led Zep and Jethro Tull. Great selection Mia and Juliet-TWO thumbs up!!

When I watched that video the first time I was so mind blown I would not be able to say anything coherent for the first half minute. Total overload, out of RAM, that type of holy shit I can't believe. It sounds like total chaos near the end, but it's actually several melodies dancing around each other and the singing. I had to go out to the fresh air just to calm down :D

I am a big fan of Wagakki Band, so watch a lot of reaction videos to see how people react to them. I really enjoyed your reaction video. You said you are big music fans. So I would like to recommend a few other Japanese bands for your to watch. Sekai No Owari, Gesu No Kiwami Otome and Clammbon are three bands that I think are excellent. There first two are rock and the third is a rock/jazz fusion. What I like about all three is that they have terrific piano players and the piano is a key instrument in their music. Check them out when you have a chance.

Here is the line-up of the band and what Wagakki means Wagakki refers to musical instruments that originated in Japan. "Wa" means Japanese style. "Gakki" means musical instruments. Yuko Suzuhana - singing Machiya - guitar Beni Ninigawa Tsugaru Shamisen Kiyoshi Ibukuro - koto Asa - bass Daisuke Kaminaga - Shakuhachi Wasabi - drums Kurona - Wadaiko

Yep, they've got a big group. There's the contemporary drums *and* traditional, electric guitars *and* a traditional equivalent (a shamizen, the "banjo played with a putty knife"; I understand the performer being a former singer who suffered a throat injury), and a flutist. I believe they've also got a traditional harp equivalent. The band started as a Vocaloid cover band, playing songs originally meant for the "singer in a box," which was meant to replace traditional singers and sing music supposedly impossible for a human vocalist. So, yeah... Their singer covers songs that she's not supposed to be able to sing.... 🤨

Thank you for responding to Wagakki Band from Japan ✨🤗 (Although it's been 3 years 😅 The banjo-like instrument is an ancient instrument called "Tsugaru shamisen". It was originally a stringed instrument that was introduced from ancient Persia to China, and was introduced to Japan and became the current instrument with three strings. The woman playing is called Beni Ninagawa and started playing Tsugaru shamisen at the age of 7-8. In the past, she worked as a Tsugaru shamisen performer, but also worked as a model and actress. After that, while participating in many sessions as a Tsugaru shamisen player, she also posted solo "playback videos" of anime songs and vocaloid songs on video sites. Just visiting some of the stuff I, personally, have not a clue about and .. well! I had an inkling of what it *could* be like having heard a few Japanese bands before and was not disappointed. A horrible generalisation but, I have found that if the Japanese do something (be that music, alcohol) as a 'copy' of something Occidental they do not do it by halves and they do it damned well. The sight and sound of that musician attacking that stringed instrument (was it a shamisen?) like a dervish, and the sound was fantastic!

There are indeed loads of excellent Japanese bands. You make it sound like music didn't exist in Japan previous to Western influence though.

@@cepho8349 No, I specifically said if they copy something. I made no reference to any 'original' music (for much want of a better term) as the context was music that has outside influences. If I gave the impression that 'we in the west' invented everything and/or do it better than anyone else that was certainly NOT my intention.
