The May dac is absolutely incredible, and my reference is the $105K MSB Select II. For literally a 20th of the price, the May dac gives you a big slice of the organic body, stunning separation combined with spooky real tone. It will step up to another level if you can use HQ player or Mscaler or Auralic Sirius to upsample before going into NOS May

HQ player is the oversampling software used by GoldenSound. I got the May L2 and like it quite a bit. Re build quality, I was a bit surprised by the rattling buttons on the remote. I agree on the NOS. Downloaded HQ player and did not find it helpful, but that was with a lowend integrated amp. Just got a Pass XA-25, so may re-explore the HQ player. Re inputs, I would have liked two digital coax inputs, but there is only one. The digital interface actually has 2 COAX options, but there is only one physical input, which is really odd. I tried a Y-splitter cable, but that did not work, so ended up connecting the lower end component with optical.

Did you compare the Holo (either model) with OS and NOS? What sample rate did you play back at? And what filter did you apply? High end "smoothness" (roll off) is an expected "feature" when playback is done at 44.1/48 in NOS mode. Staging(not separation) is a consequence of ringing pre/post. Lateral width I'd have to look more into but most likely had more to do with your toe in / Sweet spot and wall reflections. Lastly, was that the serene/holo may/power supply?

What you describe with Terminators detsil sparkling is the upsampling. Holo designs are natively best in nos but you can add far better upsampling than what terminator can do with hqplayer or just Roon if you stream from a good pc. The difference here is that Terminator has to rely on native upsampling while you can feed holo may or spring with upsampled DSD512 signal in nos mode.

Did you find the MSB DACs to be superior to these two?

Yes, MSB is superior, but I think the May can compete with the Discrete, but Reference and Select is above everything else in the market if organic and natural sound is what you like

Hi Jay, I'm looking to buy a new dac. Among these two plus Doge 7, which one is best for female vocal with forward presentation, big mid range, and musical? Ps. I'm using Willsenton R800i as my amplifier.

i'm seeing the Holo May starting to pop up for sale on audiogon. Most people that go out and drop $5K+ on a dac can't tell the difference between the dac in their AVR or processor and a $5K dac so they end up selling it though they say "I'm upgrading my system" though we all now that's not true. They just regret spending $5K on a dac they can't hear a difference. I have the Holo May & Schiit Yggydrasil but honestly most A/B comparisons I do for people they can't hear a difference between not only those dacs, but also many choose the dac in my Anthem STR pre-amp. I like being able to listen to different dacs, I know the differences and it matters to me, but i do find it funny how many choose the STR in a blind test. go figure

I bought a Chord Qutest and it blew me away compared to all the $200-$300 DACs I was used to. Then I got a DAVE and honestly while it is sharper and more etched than even the Qutest, it wasn’t 10x better and I actually liked the Qutest more as the DAVE is almost too bright. I think $1000 is about the sweet spot for high end but not overly obscene.

I would prefer dena termiantor plus because seems holo may lose some high frequency to be smooth and long-period friendly to the lisener. I know someone also complaint about holo may is a little bit dim and dull compared to dena terminator plus.

I don’t find that at all true, as I had a Terminator 1 with DSP board upgrade and I prefer the Holo Spring 3 over it’s sound. It’s a little more lively and musical not as dry. Bass is a little fuller and tighter.

Jay, nice review 👏 My system is compose with the Wilson Sasha 2, power by Devialet 440 pro, dCS bridge, Metronome T5 transport all cable by Nordeste Tyr2, power, speaker and digital cables. I’m considering upgrade the speakers to the Alexia2 and i wanna know if i use the Holo Dac connected to the Devialet by RCA cables will bring me some benefits, or if you suggest any other DAC to my system. because of the size I don’t wanna leave the Devialet. Thanks

At this point I think we need a clearer context of what you're describing. Like which part of a song made you feel this way or that way. It's hard to understand just by superlatives, because the words don't always mean the same thing for everyone.

Why would anybody choose a "bright" DAC? Although I don't have a terminator plus, my experience with denefrips (pompous II) is just the opposite. Then again, speakers make a difference. Mine are fairly transparent (JBL L112s).
