Two Audi RS4's B9 , different mileage , same issues . What can happen if the rocker arm fails ?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Welcome back to our channel. This time we have with us two RS4's B9's . White one with higher mileage , grey one did not do even 30K and the engine don't even want to start. So before we do anything we carry out a quick check but you know that at our workshop we always take the engine out at the end of the day. Once we opened them up we were a bit shocked ... What do you think ?
Thanks for watching

This isn’t new either. When the gen 3 VW engine came out in 2013.5 (Jetta GLI, Beetle CPPA), they used smaller arms like this. I had several I replaced chains on and the rocker arms were doing this. The 2014 CPRA, CPKA 1.8 had the same issue. By 2015 they all had the larger old design rockers.

I started watching your channel when i had a B8.5 Audi S5 a few years ago and found it to be helpful & informative. 👍 I now have a 2018 RS5 which is running really well at the moment. The owner of the low mileage car was obviously aware of a tapping noise and chose to change the injector instead of sending it to yourselves. The engine would have given some signs before such a huge failure. 😢 For those questioning the low mileage , Audi std warranty is for 3 years or 60k depending on which 1 one comes 1st. So unless the owner paid for an extended warranty , audi have no obligation to fix it as it is 6 years old. If my engine starts making a ticking sound i will be straight on the phone to you guys for the next video.

Never ceases to amaze me how people can continue to drive something that's making noises like that and drive it until it stops! - still his wallet will be making a fluttering noise now with all the notes disappearing out of it!. Wonder why they used those roller bearings?, as they are not really suited to the kind of motion in a rocker - would have thought a bronze bush would have been better for service life, but probably down to friction reduction and cost of manufacture - not good to be failing at those kind of mileages though. Great work by the way - very interesting and informative channel.

Makes me feel better this not known issue only to the B9 S5 Engine (not a mechanic so I guess they might have similar components) I have had one of the Audi Techs come to my house and extract engine oil out of my car as it went in for an oil change and they some how managed to put in 1.5 litres of extra oil in the vehicle so on the drive back it flashed on the cockpit "Please Reduce Engine Oil" and tested with 2 small journeys locally and cut off car immediately as soon as I got the message again started of email chain and they wanted me to drive it back to the dealership I refused and asked for recovery that's why they sent the technician to my home. I asked him about the engine and rocker arm issue and he said he only knew one car that had the issue but stated something lol using different oil and being tuned where I stated this KZread channel where some vehicles are stock.

69k miles is nothing for modern cars, IF basic maintenance is followed. People trying to pinch pennies by not having at least an annual service, end up paying big money in the long run. Possibly not even the current owners fault, that would really piss me off! But saying that, the first thing I would have done is a full service, even if the seller said it's been done.

I run a 2018 B9 RS4 with 42k and these videos are a touch scary !! But like someone commented the Nardo Grey RS must have had a very hard life to fail so spectacularly at only 26K ?? And why was the warranty claim rejected ? I’m keen to know that because I have extended all component cover on mine .. Also it’s worth remembering that this is a Porsche designed and developed engine that’s used in the Maccan, do Maccan owners suffer the same issues ?? So should owners take it upon themselves to fit the modified rocker arm bearings ? Looking forward to seeing the next video covering these two RS4’s 👍

Same engine , don’t forget ( what I know ) extended warranty will only Cover damaged part 😀 not the actual damage what’s left after … so if your rocker arm will fail , they only Cover one rocker arm

What would you advise I do ? my car is running fine Ive had it from new and has had a very easy life, never been on track and only launched a handful of times but still its a worry that something will go wrong, of course assuming my build didn't have the modified Rocker bearings @@VAGTechnic

I m buying a new car in the summer, been looking at a BMW m340i but they are a little bit out of my price range so starting looking at a Audi b9 S4 but with the problems they are having probably better spending a bit more on the beemer!

When the mechanics see a trend in repairs, it isn’t a coincidence, there is a problem. 26k miles and not covered under warranty or did I miss something? Is this car flagged as a TD1? I just saw a new 4.0T that had a very similar issue. VAG is slipping these past few years. Think I’ll stick with my C7. Another great video and a teaching point: listen to your car, it’s talking to you all the time.

This high mileage rocker arms looks like updated ones. And low mileage engine rocker arms looks like original, failing ones. Probably that coolant leakage was partly reason, why it went like domino, failing whole unit. Is there factory original oil in engine also? But do not look very promising for B9 2.9 engine in long run, if they fail without tuning already.
