Two Audi RS4's B9 , different mileage , same issues . What can happen if the rocker arm fails ?
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Welcome back to our channel. This time we have with us two RS4's B9's . White one with higher mileage , grey one did not do even 30K and the engine don't even want to start. So before we do anything we carry out a quick check but you know that at our workshop we always take the engine out at the end of the day. Once we opened them up we were a bit shocked ... What do you think ?
Thanks for watching

This isn’t new either. When the gen 3 VW engine came out in 2013.5 (Jetta GLI, Beetle CPPA), they used smaller arms like this. I had several I replaced chains on and the rocker arms were doing this. The 2014 CPRA, CPKA 1.8 had the same issue. By 2015 they all had the larger old design rockers.
It's definitely not boring. I love to see people with the knowledge and skill to do the jobs you do, great channel 👍

The good old Gyor plant in Hungary are doing a great job of keeping you boys in work. How Audi can can wash their hands of this debacle tells us all we need to know about what a fantastic engineering and customer service company Audi is. No wonder Audi is at the bottom of the Which 2024 car brand reliability report. If I was unlucky enough to own one of these , it would be sent to you for immediate attention . Thanks gents.
You are a great advert for not buying one - although if broken you are the best place to take it
Those rocker arms look so flimsy and crudely made. 28K and total engine failure, what a joke and they probably started failing at 25K. I really feel for the owners, this is just not acceptable.

Love your videos Thomas, please don’t think you’re boring 👍🏼
This channel is under appreciated. Just keep doing the videos, really good content. Cheers!
I really enjoy these videos. Great work guys. Love the oooh la la’s. Look forward to the next vid to see how the low mileage RS4 engine gets fixed.

Moral of the story. If coolent level is dropping or requires topup frequently. Park it up and get a fiat panda. While saving for the audi bill😂
Hi guys, love all your videos. They are not boring at all. The are very educational in preventing catastrophic failures in the cars me and my friend service. Just a quick question though, where did you guys get the big jack you use to drop the engine on?
Never boring literally having fun watching these videos of yours
Far from boring videos, these are proper eye openers. And owning an RS car myself it is sort of worrying what can happen.
Very helpful videos - thanks!! (I have 3 Audis with the 2.9/3.0lt engines so I watch and read all the forums)
i wish your shop was here in the states. I have a b9 s5 in my garage with glitter in the oil from failed original rocker arms. I would love to have you to fix it. You are all so knowledgeable
Thanks for the video’s definitely not boring, I’ve recently bought a s5 2021 hope it goes well for me 😥.
Nice work.... Im very interested in the sequel of this video
I take it both these vehicles are 2018 ? Keep up the good work with these videos.. watching your videos is the main reason why I only buy new RS models and change them every 2 years!!
I love ❤️ your channel and I'm amazed that Audi in RS lineup doesn't admit the fault. I'm sure Audi will pay in long-term like was with dieselgate saga.
I’ve an Audi 2L Diesel 190 bhp touch wood all seems ok but love watching your videos and listening to your diagnostic thoughts but now always worrying will mine stay healthy 🥹
i like the intro where you hear the tapping sound
Guys your not boring. Its a good thing that the" little men" are keeping the big manufacturers on their toes and not taking their knowledge as gospel. Without people like you guys we would just have to accept what the manufacturers tell us regardless of whether they are right or wrong. Keep showing these engine failures. The message might slowly get through to make stuff better.
Great content as always VAG!
Great job boys 🙌🏼 You’ve got a follower 👋🏼 Pozdrav iz Beograda
I started watching your channel when i had a B8.5 Audi S5 a few years ago and found it to be helpful & informative. 👍 I now have a 2018 RS5 which is running really well at the moment. The owner of the low mileage car was obviously aware of a tapping noise and chose to change the injector instead of sending it to yourselves. The engine would have given some signs before such a huge failure. 😢 For those questioning the low mileage , Audi std warranty is for 3 years or 60k depending on which 1 one comes 1st. So unless the owner paid for an extended warranty , audi have no obligation to fix it as it is 6 years old. If my engine starts making a ticking sound i will be straight on the phone to you guys for the next video.
Another excellent video, thank for doing these. What year(s) are these two? I didn't hear it in the video, but I assume 2018?

Great vid. My B8.5 RS4 was the biggest POS I have ever owned. Never again.
Doggo, Miroslav and broken RS4 B9 engines, it must be a new exciting engineering video from VAG technic 😁 No doubt involving two million pounds of parts from TPS who must be getting very rich from all the money they take from VAG Technic
Also just to add Audi's ERWIN servicing and documentation portal specifies 0W30 oil. Could the 0W20 gnats piss be a contributing factor to the rocker arm failures? Could the intercooler leaks be thermal shock in cold weather when the charge coolant pump kicks in under full load/intake temp?
Top Job Best channel on u tube, well done lads 😁

Never ceases to amaze me how people can continue to drive something that's making noises like that and drive it until it stops! - still his wallet will be making a fluttering noise now with all the notes disappearing out of it!. Wonder why they used those roller bearings?, as they are not really suited to the kind of motion in a rocker - would have thought a bronze bush would have been better for service life, but probably down to friction reduction and cost of manufacture - not good to be failing at those kind of mileages though. Great work by the way - very interesting and informative channel.
I've always wanted to work with engines in the same way you do.. Would you be able to give me an idea of where to start?

Was the one with no compression cylinder 6 tuned or stock?
Makes me feel better this not known issue only to the B9 S5 Engine (not a mechanic so I guess they might have similar components) I have had one of the Audi Techs come to my house and extract engine oil out of my car as it went in for an oil change and they some how managed to put in 1.5 litres of extra oil in the vehicle so on the drive back it flashed on the cockpit "Please Reduce Engine Oil" and tested with 2 small journeys locally and cut off car immediately as soon as I got the message again started of email chain and they wanted me to drive it back to the dealership I refused and asked for recovery that's why they sent the technician to my home. I asked him about the engine and rocker arm issue and he said he only knew one car that had the issue but stated something lol using different oil and being tuned where I stated this KZread channel where some vehicles are stock.
Video was excellent
The new rocker arms from TPS have this flaw ironed out?
The two 2017 s4 I was looking at and passed on (thanks to your videos) are now sold. I pray for those new owners….even a mechanical third party warranty has limits.
Best to use 5w40 in these?
This is true representation of your country btw. highly skilled people!
What build date did Audi start using the new rocker arms?
That grey one has got to have a mileage blocker on it or something, that much damage at sub 30k dose not add up

Yeah I was thinking this aswell. And the rocker covers look like they've been off before looking at the state of the sealant.
What year are each of the cars? Thanks
69k miles is nothing for modern cars, IF basic maintenance is followed. People trying to pinch pennies by not having at least an annual service, end up paying big money in the long run. Possibly not even the current owners fault, that would really piss me off! But saying that, the first thing I would have done is a full service, even if the seller said it's been done.

I run a 2018 B9 RS4 with 42k and these videos are a touch scary !! But like someone commented the Nardo Grey RS must have had a very hard life to fail so spectacularly at only 26K ?? And why was the warranty claim rejected ? I’m keen to know that because I have extended all component cover on mine .. Also it’s worth remembering that this is a Porsche designed and developed engine that’s used in the Maccan, do Maccan owners suffer the same issues ?? So should owners take it upon themselves to fit the modified rocker arm bearings ? Looking forward to seeing the next video covering these two RS4’s 👍

When the mechanics see a trend in repairs, it isn’t a coincidence, there is a problem. 26k miles and not covered under warranty or did I miss something? Is this car flagged as a TD1? I just saw a new 4.0T that had a very similar issue. VAG is slipping these past few years. Think I’ll stick with my C7. Probably that coolant leakage was partly reason, why it went like domino, failing whole unit. Is there factory original oil in engine also?
