Two Antique Jacob's Ladders

Ғылым және технология

The Jacob's Ladder or Tumbling Blocks toy apparently dates back several centuries. A series of wooden or sometimes cardboard blocks have different pictures on the front and back. The blocks are held together with ribbons which allow the picture to change from one image to another when you tilt the top block. The toy gives the illusion that all the blocks are tumbling downwards.
The first toy is of a traditional design. he second one, called The American Beauty Show, also contains two sets of paper fans that alternately open, depending which way you tilt the toy.

I have a similar toy, but instead of cards, each section is a wooden block, so that when it's flipped over and the blocks fall on each other, they make a clacking sound. It's called a Pata-Pata (for the sound it makes), and if my memory serves me right, I got it at the Japanese sector at Disney World's Epcot.

I've been fascinated by the Jacob's ladder since i was 6 years old and I've made many versions of it throughout the years. I've found a tiny version (only 4 blocks) of it lately and naturally I needed to get hold of it and combine a few sets of them to create a much longer one. Has anyone ever made a Jacob's ladder out of acrylic? I think it'll be rather cool looking.

Tim, Thanks so much for your wonderful channel. I'm a visual artist and am working on a "book arts" piece. The format of the "International Beauty Show" that you featured is intriguing and would be perfect for what I'm trying to design. Do you have any idea as to how it was made? If not, can you refer me to any sources that might be of help? Thanks again and cheers, Marie

Hello! I know this is an old post but I just found it during a search for how to make jacob's ladders. I'm working on a photo project and would like to make a jacob's ladder out of them, but instructions I've found have shown three ribbons, with one in the middle over where the photo would be. Since you've repaired this and presumably know how it goes together, would you be able to give me some tips on how to keep the ribbons just on the sides? Part two: what I would really love to do is make it in two directions- where you could make them drop like this vertically but also horizontally. Is that something you think would be possible or is that a pipe dream because of the mechanics of the thing? Sorry for the long comment, but your passion and expertise are inspiring! Thank you for showing such beautiful examples of these very cool toys.

Arra Neon the ribbons are holding it in one direction and when you turn it the other piece slides across the ribbon and since one end is now not being held up it falls causing it to knock the other one down and make an elegant chain reaction
