Two and a Half Minutes of Elephant Seals Snoring | A Year in Antarctica (2010)
In late summer, southern elephant seals congregate in wallows for their annual moult. It can take the larger males up to 55 days to shed their fur and skin. During this time, they do not eat, and must rely on their fat stores to get them through. Observing these hangry, irritable beasts in such close proximity is quite an assault on the senses.

They’re also really good oceanographers. Someone had the idea of sticking small CTDs to their heads, which revealed some really important (and previously unknown) water mass formations in the Antarctic winter.
Lol, they make so much more sense when you see one in water. Weird creatures for sure.

There is nothing more disgusting than when these guys molt. The smell alone is horrible. I think it might make them more grumpy. I would not want the last thing I see before I die be a male elephant seal whose face is half-molted belch in my face.

Yes they’re molting at that time of year. They don’t feed during this time. It takes them about a month to finish.
