Melissa was actually a decent character. She picked up on the fact that Bill and Jo still loved each other, and she didn't create a scene but walked away with dignity, just like a true lady. I like Helen Hunt, but her character, Jo, was a bit obsessed with the twisters and a bit annoying when putting herself and others in danger.

Real tornados are freaky deeky dutch. Even if you've seen a few they are still intense and very disturbing to see. I know people from Kansas and other states that see them as a regular occurrence but are still cautious depending on size and direction. They are no joke, even the smaller funnels can destroy your lifes work.

So I lived in Kansas from age 3 to 11 and while I thankfully never saw a tornado I did experience storms that did almost as much damage. And yet I still love this movie. It truly captures the horror and the thrill of storm chasing. And nowadays some chasers actually build their own ARMORED VEHICLES to not just chase storms but to get purposely in their way, drop down some anchors, and have tornadoes run over them while pointing cameras and other meteorological equipment up the funnel. There was a show on Discovery channel over 10 years ago called Storm Chasers where 2 groups of chasers with their own armored vehicles did just that. One with an IMAX camera.

Little late to this reaction, but you were mentioning the sound and I saw twister twice in the theatre and the tornado sounds were incredible. I grew up in the midwest and saw a few tornadoes, one we were chasing after and it dropped right beside us in a field, and the sound in the movie while not technically accurap it definitely conveys the feel of being too close to a tornado. They have more of the rumble and roar of a train and less of the growl sound in the movie. This movie is so good at providing the tension, fear, and awe that comes from having a tornado hit too close for comfort.

Jan de Bont also directed Speed! This movie scared the crap out of me as a kid, the tornadoes felt like real monsters and I was terrified that a tornado would come for us. It's cool how they level up like video game bosses, and each tornado comes with it's own exciting set piece. The drive in theatre playing The Shining really creeped me out, and I love when the tornado rips the screen apart. I also remember being really sad when Melissa drives off and forgets the coffees on the roof.

So much so that we even tried to get a group of people together from a kids summer community center and turn it into a play. It never happened though but we practiced. I've seen this movie more times than I can count and it never gets boring. This is probably my favorite disaster movie of all time. Needless to say I'm excited for Twisters when it comes out. It's too bad you two didn't see this when it was in theaters. That was quite the experience and that was before IMAX. It's fascinating to see people react to it for the first time. Also, I was obsessed with Ram pickups after it came out lol. As far as seeing a tornado, I never have, but I remember back in '98, my uncle had taken me out for dinner for my 15th birthday and as we were going home, this really severe thunderstorm barreled in that lasted well into the next morning. I didn't know it happened while the storm was going on, but apparently a funnel cloud was spotted over the downtown area of the city I live in. It didn't touch down, but it's still a good thing I didn't know because I was already scared enough as it was. Just like Roxy, I grew up in New England and that kind of thing doesn't usually happen here. That was the absolute worst thunderstorm I've ever experienced.

My daughter and I went to see this when it came out, it was on a large screen at an independent theater owned by a man who was a master at audio. He had the most fantastic system and we got to hear the wind swirling around us in the auditorium. I do know how tornados work, and much of this demands a willing suspension of disbelief, but it's just fun to watch. This was the first time I was aware of Philip Seymour Hoffman (I didn't know his name at the time), but I left the theater thinking he was the best part of the movie aside from the tornado special effects, and I said, "That guy is going to win an Oscar some day."

Here in Oklahoma, we have a Tornado Season which lasts from March 15 to June 15, and on occasion see one close to an F5. Last one I witnessed in person was May 3, 1999 and again in ‘13. They are scary as hell but that’s why we have a weekly test of the alert system every Saturday at noon. And an easy way to tell if there’s one coming, if it looks stormy out, if it changes temp within 2 minutes from warm and humid to cold. And the drive in scene wasn’t the actual drive in here, the flash at night behind the screen was the only true part, the garage, layout and everything isn’t there. The drive in is called The Beacon and it’s in Guthrie about 40 minutes north from where I live.
