Twisted Metal: Small Brawl Video Review

Ойындар

Gaming Pastime reviews Twisted Metal: Small Brawl for PlayStation.
Developed by Incognito Entertainment and published by Sony Computer Entertainment, Twisted Metal: Small Brawl was released for the PlayStation in November, 2001. This feels like a slow-paced rehash of Twisted Metal 2 and there's nothing new or memorable to make is stand out.

This is probably the most subversive Twisted Metal game. Kids playing with RC Cars that contain deadly weapons they shouldn't be playing with at such a young age. Hilarious. I haven't played it yet though but it looks interesting.

Small Brawl was my parents solution to me playing all the other Twisted Metal games from the PS1, as a 6 year old. They thought those ones were too morbid and violent for me, so they bought me Small Brawl. I honestly think it's the most creative of all Twisted Metal games. By far one of my favorite games of all time.

This was my first Twisted Metal, came out when I was 6. I enjoyed it because the slower pace was easier when fine motor skills aren't really a thing yet, also easier to play with my little brother for the same reason I already stated. Just for that reason I'd say they succeeded with Small Brawl, the slower pace helped young kids like me ease into the series I could enjoy later in life with Black, Head On and 2012. Also let me go back to 2 and have a fighting chance playing it. Not my favorite Twisted Metal but is definitely the one I feel most nostalgic to

My case is exactly like yours, I remember this game coming with my PS1 on christmas, there was also a CD Demo with it too, it had Spider-Man 2 Enter Electron, Sheep Raider and other games. I definitely feel nostalgic about this game. PD: Sorry to respond to a 1 year old comment.

im glad you pointed out something the reviewer didn't, this game was made for KIDS!! kids may not be able to handle the fast pace speed of the TM games, heck I played the very first one as a kid and for the first couple of years, I didn't like it because I thought it was hard to control and unfair.....because I was a kid who didn't get the appeal yet, so going more methodical and less difficult while using a set up that still allows it to be dark with a kid friendly facade was a good idea, regardless if you care for the characterization.

I remember when I was young my best friend had this game and I owned every other twisted metal in the series, but if I went to his house we were only allowed to play small brawl because it looked like a game more meant for children. Needless to say, I enjoyed this game and I LOVED the level; design. I do agree on most of your points with the slow gameplay, great sound track, and that the overall feel of the game seems to be completely off from any other TM in the genre. I personally liked all the endings and I liked the new unlockable cars/levels that were added and it showed that the publishers had creativity, but overall the game got boring and old after 1 playthrough due to it's slow gameplay. Great review!

Wow another one of my games, boy do I have some fun development stories about this game. I brought over a lot of Vigilante 8 designs into this game and to Twisted Metal Black: Online. It was a miracle we finished this game since we had to build the game engine while we were developing the game at the same time with only 8 months and a small team to make it. It was designed for a younger audience hence being slower and easier.

Given that this game came out the same year as TM black, the tone taken makes a lot of sense, they wanted one last TM game on the older console that was cheaper to make games for and wouldn't be in direct competition with its own bigger budget release on the new next gen console, so going a more kid theme was a great idea to make the bar of entry into making this a gateway entry into the Twisted metal series for kids to get interested in later entries down the line and make some extra cash on the side as a last hurrah with the PS1

Great review, left a like. :) Though I disagree on this game not being a good gateway into the series. While I played other TMs before this one, Small Brawl was the first TM I really, really got into, and the slow-paced combat helped me comprehend just how I'm supposed to play these games. The next time I played 2 and Black, I had a much better understanding on what to do. Also, the kiddy "Saturday morning cartoon" approach was quite appealing to me. It certainly isn't my favorite TM by a long shot (that honor would go to Black or Head-On, with 2012 not too far behind), but I think it's a fantastic gateway into the Twisted Metal series. Also, yeah, 3 and 4 really weren't that bad. Though, that said, I do have my fair share of issues with them. Lol. And thank you for constantly criticizing the AI in your Twisted Metal reviews. Seriously, just because a series is multiplayer-focused doesn't mean that's an excuse to make the AI godawful.

It is on KZread. Just look it up. IMHO, I don't see anything offensive about it, and Sony ordered it cut over fear of having to shell out don't sue us money because parents overreacted to one single FMV video when they could have spend the time better educating their kids on why it's wrong and that the game is a work of fiction. In other words: Teach your kids what is seen in the game is wrong in real life instead of complaining to the companies and eventually ruining the fun for everyone else.

Beyond a shadow of a doubt small brawl has a more interesting character & level design than TM3. TM3 is virtually 989s take on TM2 . That doesn't make it a bad game but certainly the most unoriginal of the series. Gameplay wise I couldn't stand flipping over in 3 which ik was a common complaint but is slowed the pacing far more than in small brawl. I even prefer the slower pacing here. Look I like all the TM games even the 989 titles. Hell my first game was TM4 but Small Brawl is underrated if you enjoy the zany wacky racers style of TM it's just pure fun.

I believe this game would be huge if it were remastered and had online capabilities, as well as unlock-able content and DLC. It's such a casual game to play that also allows you to have strategies against opponents. If it had an updated control scheme and much better graphics, it would be popular. Imagine the cars looking much more plastic, and the environments way more fleshed out. This specific Twisted Metal game should be given the same treatment as many of the other remastered PS1 games we've seen recently.

This was my jam. Loved this game, I'm surprised they didn't release a new RC game in the series. It's clear many didn't live through the PS1 era.

Quite the oddball installment but I can still dig it! I love car combat games of all kinds, so yeah. If you want to look into more of the RC racing/combat concept, look into Re-Volt, the amount of mods there is insane and there are some great content, give it a try!

This was my first Twisted Metal I ever played, and by far my favorite. Sorry it's not on your top list. Twisted Metal 3+4 were actually my 2nd and 3rd Twisted Metals I played. I think I actually got TM3 and TM Small Brawl on the same day at Toys R Us way back in like 2001 or 2002. I liked certain elements in TM3 for sure, but after I got TM 1 and 2, I knew which were better in tone and gameplay. That was without any bias, as I was way too young to be on TMA or any of the forums.

This was the first Twisted Metal that I played, but the first one that I owned was Head On: Extra Twisted Edition and then Black.

To me it's still crazy there is a Twisted Metal 3, 4 and Small Brawl. None of them - as far as I am aware - were ever released in the UK. Got them all for the PlayStation classic, looking forward to trying them.

I loved this game dearly as a child and still come back to play it occasionally. I never got why everyone hated it so much I loved it

Please do the old 3DO Army Men games, a lot of people watching your Twisted Metal reviews will probably find deep interest in those. Also personal request but Might and Magic 6 is a very good first person party RPG that's loaded and gilded with the charm that makes games from this era appealing.

Small Brawl is great, I love it just because of the whole RC premise. Sure the story is a bit slow but just the battles themselves are fun and a bit challenging. The vehicle roster is healthy and has a lot of good vehicles, sure maybe not lore heavy but hey, they’re still cool. As for this being the worst? I highly disagree, 3 was the worst, 4 was underrated and a great game, but 3 does suffer moreso from the main problems listed for this game. I’ve played 3 enough to say its just a below ordinary, disappointing game with even less curb appeal than Small Brawl. Should any game have not been made, it should be that one

Small Brawl could have been a lot more than what it turned out to be. I thought the RC Car theme provided great potential for character and stage development. Unfortunatly, it's clear that this was a B title when it should have been a AAA spin off like Black. Actually, it would have been cool to have three Twisted Metal universes like Command and Conquer, each aiming for a different demographic. The main series is a 90s comic book/heavy metal album, small brawl is a saturday morining cartoon, and Black is a pychological horror film.

Made me happy to see people still care about this series I grew up with it pretty much. One of my favorites I felt it was very creative and I love the remixes of the songs they had in this game. Personally I don't really care for the ps3 twisted metal.

Something that's weird is that two of the locked characters do have there drivers shown(Axel in the intro/cut ending, and artwork of Ash),yet the rest are seemingly disregarded. The only time you dont learn about the locked characters are the two 989 games. What makes this worse is that this game came out AFTER black,so there was no reasonable excuse for this to be a thing.
