Twisted German Cast On

This is my absolute favorite cast on! I use it for everything from hats to brioche :) It gives a nice flexible edge, and after you practice it a few times, it becomes just as rhythmic as your regular long tail cast on!

I haven't used this cast-on in a number of years, but when I was teaching, I would push my students to learn to find that tiny opening at the end, then drop everything, snug it up and repeat. But you opened up the possibility here that there's no shame in opening up the thumb so you can see that space better. And I found that if I open up that thumb, creating a bit more space, then continue with a smooth movement dropping everything and resetting your hands and yarn for the next cast-on stitch . . . well, this is such an elegant move. Thank you. And I have a feeling that, at age 66, it's easier for me to see where to move my needle. I found this video via the link in your new Traveler hat. Jared at Brooklyn Tweed emailed the announcement this morning.

Thank you for the lovely clear tutorial! I'm trying to use new ways of casting on to improve my knitting, and had chosen this from a knitting book (where it was called the 'twisted double cast on') but just could not work out from the instructions in the book what to do after picking up the loop from my index finger, so was getting more loops round the needle every time! Following your instructions, I got it right first time.

Andrea, thank you for doing a great video! This is a method I'll use from now on just because it makes such a pretty edge. Also, the way to measure the yarn you'll need is spot on! I always end up with the perfect length. Not too short that I have to restart, and not too long that I end up wasting any yarn. So thank you! 💕 Addendum: I just cast on 258 stitches for a sweater using the Twisted German Cast On method, and using your method for measuring the long tail. This measuring method is genius for the Twisted German Cast On! I had 6" left. It's truly genius!!!
