    I started driving in 1978 for a Wholesale Grocery Company in Richmond CA. They still had tractors from the 60's in use, I learned how to drive on a 1962 International Conventional w/a 5x3. In 1980 my daily tractor was a 1969 PETERBUILT 281 w/a 4x4. The newer trucks had FULLER Roadranger 13's & Eaton 10's but us low Seniority drivers drove the old equipment....I miss that Old PETE.....

    Iv got a VT 903 in my cabover Kenny. Went pretty good but i sure as hell wouldnt say it was a torque monster. Very much the same power characteristics of a 8V71 GM, but ya GOTTA KEEP EM SPINNING OVER 2000 rpm otherwise power drops like a brick. Theyre happy at 2400 but even then ya gotta drop gears when ya hit a hill. They are a flat lander motor, crossing long flat stretches at high speed. Eg Australia, Perth to Melbourne. They have a habit of spinning the rear main bearing, or if over reved, throwing a rod outta bed. I found out the hard way. Cruising along at 2500 and oil pressure at 75, normal, the ten seconds later looked again and oil pressure had dropped to 20 psi. Shut her off straight away and pulled over. Temp was 75. Not hot at all and everything else was perfect. No noises or anything out of order. Waited fifteen minutes after checking everything on the motor, turbo lines etc, hopped back in, started first flip and oil pressure immediately shot to ninety then dropped to 75 and then down to 50 . Normal at idle speed. Took off again very easily and all was normal then after about two minutes it dropped to twenty again. About a mile from home a slight hill came up so i nursed it up that at 1500 and as i was pulling up the drive, I got a whiff of something i hadnt smelt before out of her. I hpped out with her still idling at 900 rpm and there was steam coming out of the two breathers. The engine temp was exactly normal, the Horton fan hadnt even clicked into gear. Turned out to be a very expensive smell. Spun the rear main bearing and it was dropping bits of red hot metal into the oil pan, hense the smell. Burgered the crank and the whole block. New motor needed. I would’ve gone to a 855 or N14 but they are longer and because its a tipper its got a very solid cross member where the ram sits and there just aint the room for it by about 12 inches.

    No syncros... the gears are so close ratio that if you double clutch you will have to rev the engine back up to match drive train speed, a simple tap of the clutch lets it fall right in gear with no clashing. If you were to hold the clutch too long it would not mesh and clash.

    Well its actually a 13 speed because you put main in 1st and auxiliary in 1st then shift 1-4 in auxiliary and then 2nd main and 2nd auxiliary then 2-4 in auxiliary and then 3rd main 2nd auxiliary then 2-4 auxiliary and then 4th main 2nd auxiliary and 2-4 in auxiliary because 1st auxiliary is a lo lo gear and is redundant after you go to 2nd in the main. If that makes sense

    when you say 4 an 4 trans, would this effectively be 1 trans behind the other? do they run any sort of over run coupler or clutch between them? as your back box will effectively be still driving the back gearboxs input shaft as you shift the front. Reason I ask is I'm building a 4x4 landrover with twin gearboxs to get an effective crawl ratio

  • @michaelwilson5851

    @michaelwilson5851

    5 жыл бұрын

    Two transmissions bolted to one another. No clutch between them. Just a couple for output to input shaft. Popular off road dual setups run SM420 or SM465 for an effective 4x4 setup. But, for a crawler, it would be dual transfer cases instead of dual transmission. This setup is because the older diesels can't make anywhere near as much low end torque as modern diesels, but the trailer weights and gross weights haven't changed in almost a century. The more gears you have, the easier it is to stay in your power band.

    The 555 was actually a fairly decent engine for Cummins in terms of power, and torque, and not bad in the Top end Dept. either in terms of decent Speed if set up with the right Transmission, and Rear Axle Gearing, and had the right person behind the wheel to make them talk, and get on down the road.

    i love old trucks, but it must have bin a hell for the drivers who drove them back in the day, because there's no sign of any luxury, and the interior looks like a iron toolbox, and i gues that it doesn't have a/c, so imagine how the drivers must have alot of sweat left in that seat, and sure the engine sounds great, but when you would have to drive in that 60 hours a week for a living, i can imagine that you would get hearing problems.

    60hrs would've been nice. The few times it happened it was nice! Try more like 100-140hrs/wk much of the time, more some, & lots of 80-100hrs. That's mostly seat time. A little of it was loading/unloading. The rest of the week was used for repairs, servicing, & then rest- if any time was left. Sleep & rest always comes in as least important.

    3DPeter trucking is not a luxurious job. You have to like the lifestyle of the job and back then guys didn't care that the trucks were that way because they loved the lifestyle of the job, they were truckin thats all that mattered to them. Today, you have trucks that have too much luxury and unnecessary features. You also have guys that are disgustingly overweight that find it acceptable to wear flip flops and gym shorts on the job. You just dont do that. the bottom line is, back in the day, drivers trucked because they liked the life style and they didnt mind the primitive design and they didnt do it because it was just another way to make money

    +Darin Wissbaum This truck is 11 years newer than DUEL, it's a V-8 Cummins here as opposed to a 1674 Cat that DUEL had, this one is a 2 sticker and DUEL had a 13 speed in it. Not a lot of similarities other than both were Pete's.

    +Bruce Werner Actually there were 3 trucks used in Duel and one that was purchased for it but never used, the first two for the original TV film and the second two for the filming of additional scenes for the theatrical release. The one used for the additional scenes was a 351 and from the 70s, not a 66 like the original 281 that was destroyed. Also I'm not sure if they meant all of them or just that 351 but the later one or maybe both were modified and fitted with twin-turbo cummins V8s so they had enough power for higher speeds.

    +SydneyCBR6 Some of your story is a bit flawed. The original main truck for the TV production, was a 1955 model, not a 66. It had the 2 piano hinges down the hood--not just one. I worked for Dan Jackson, the owner of the truck, and I drove that truck right up to the day it was picked up at our yard by Universal TV to make the movie. It had a model 1674 Cat engine, 245 horsepower, and Dan had put in a new 13 speed Fuller Transmission well before the movie was made. Part of the purchase price of that truck (7,000.00 as I remember) was that Dan Jackson would retain back the salvage after the big smash up wreck at the end when she went over the cliff. All that junk came back to our yard on a flat bed, and that motor--the Cat, was on board. No V-8 was ever in that truck, and the sound of the exhaust in the movie was exactly the sound that truck made. True story. Many countless Union 76 drivers still alive drove that truck part time for Jackson, and could verify my story.

    Hi Bruce. Great insight on the old Peterbilt. Did you guys know the truck driver, Carey Loftin? What did Dan Jackson end up doing with the wrecked truck? Thanks!

    The biggest Cummins V8 diesel in 1966 was the V8-265 displacing 785 cubic inches. The 903 was not out until 1969 (1970 model year), while the small 555 (aka "Triple Nickel") wouldn't come out until another three years later (1972; 1973 model).
