The most popular version : The song’s about their music and how it’s like chlorine. Chlorine, in small doses, cleans water and can even be healthy for you. Chlorine can be essential for survival in certain situation because it’s so good at cleaning water; however, the chemical is also poisonous and can kill you if you ingest too much. He is saying that his music is the same way to him. He needs it to survive (it’s a moneymaker, but also saves him psychologically and emotionally), but it can overtake him and kill him. “This beat is a chemical”. Without it, he would die. But too much of it can also kill and destroy him. Ned (this funny creature) represents Tyler's creativity. And they start filling up the pool, but ned is not satisfied until it is completely filled with chlorine (until song is close to perfect for Tyler ).

Yeah, and when he says "When I leave, don't save my seat, I'll be back when it's all complete" I think he's referring to the hiatuses between albums, and how we shouldn't set a time limit on his music because he's going to take as much time as he needs to to insure quality no matter what

the "pokémon" is called Ned, Tyler said in an interview that "it represents this idea of creativity and trying to take care of it and trying to please it, or appease it. It's kinda that thing in you that tells you whether or not something is good." love your videos btw

Ned (the furball Pokémon with antlers) also makes an appearance in “Level of Concern, Tonight Show: At Home Edition”. He jams the guitar! It’s awesome because it was aired on tv and most people were probably confused, but fans were excited to see him

Chlorine is a methaphor for tyler's writting process. Chlorine is a cleanser and a toxic chamical. Writing for him is liberating but can also be dangerous because of the places he has to go in his head in order to write. Also the second verse is full of information: he talks about how now he doesn't just write for himself, but it has become a job so he has people to please "now you double as a paper maker". Also Tyler journals and has been known to carry around a red journal when he was younger "hide you in my coat pocket, where i kept my rebel red" "rebel red carnation, grows while i decay", his journal gets fuller the more he comsumes himself in those thoughts. They have explained in interviews that Ned was created to fill that need of showing they're not that serious all the time, they're pretty goofy guys, so they brought Ned as a comical realief in a pretty hard dense universe. Pretty much like the "fun distracting music vs deep lyrics" thing.

Yeah this song is using chlorine as the metaphor- you're spot on with your overall analysis The part you're missing is when he's talking about the moment being medical and when I leave don't save my seat - he's referring to the 3 year hiatus they took between Blurryface and Trench because after they blew up after Blurryface they needed some time to decompress and heal themselves - so he's saying we needed this break but don't worry we will be back People have already explained Ned - this was the first introduction to him but he shows up in more recent videos too - I imagine he will be a recurring character moving forward He shows up next in The Hype which is another single from Trench (im sure people have recommended a lot) - after you do The Hype, you should also do the Berlin Session version of it You're killing it!

Love your reactions. A couple thimgs about video.... **yes blue liquid is chlorine. I think they made it blue so that it doesn't just look like water and then we don't understand he's pouring chlorine. **notice that at first the pool is empty and yucky dirty. Then at the end, after song is done, the pool is empty again & Tyler looks beat and drained (and pool looks clean. Don't know if it clean is significant but i think it might be when compared to it dirty yucky at first). **Ned represents creativity. Tyler has said that this creativity is (1) something you please/appease and (2) it tells you when something is good. SO...with those 2 things in mind.....the pool is music/song(s) that they're filling with chlorine (to please/appease Ned) but Ned won't go in (song not good enough yet). **when music is "good enough" with chlorine Ned dives in, satisfied and grows horns. **the cup Tyler had...notice he has it through the entire video BUT he never takes a sip. It hasn't been confirmed what's in the cup but there are a few different theories of the cup. The most common theory is it's chlorine (notice when he puts his finger to his mouth like he's tasting a drop?? Idk but he doesn't drink). But knowing Tyler's style i'm keeping my mind open. **a couple more things to notice about the cup....When in the truck it looks like tyler might or is about to take a sip and Josh shoots him looks. Don't know why Josh shoots looks but it's significant to the story of mystery cup. Then at the video end (pool is drained, tyler looks drained, and the lighting is gloomy), he's given the cup and offers it to Ned but Ned backs off "no" and video ends with Tyler staring at cup. **Sooo... what is the story about the cup?!?! (1) he never drinks (2) Josh attentive to if he drinks (3) Ned says no and backs away and it ends with Tyler looking at cup. ** P.S...their merch department should sell a Ned plush doll...Ned's so cute!!

The music is both cleansing and destructive at the same time. Tyler had to step away from the music in order to heal. However, when he’s “gone don’t save my seat. I’ll be back when it’s all complete”. He is telling his fans that he isn’t giving up on them, he just needs to work on his psyche.

Spot on as usual, as others have said Ned represents Tylers creativity and has become a character we fans all love.

Nice reaction. Love the vibe of this song. The sound/beat is so groovy smooth. And all of the song is one big metaphor with every single line a metaphor. Metaphor city. A couple comments on the lyrics....(just parts you brought up)..... **yes exactly correct about chlorine!! sipping on chlorine (music making) is cleansing BUT in large amount can be toxic. **he went on 3 year hiatus but promises to come back ("don't save my seat. I'll be back when complete") But for now he has to take care of himself/psyche ("Moment is medical") **yes you're right that papermaker is moneymaker but it's not from chlorine. It's from the lead he mentions in previous lines. ("My body lives on lead...the lead is terrible in flavor but doubles as papermaker") The lead meaning pencil that he writes music with. **("tested like weathered flag beside the sea") tested by music industry/fame/success. **every line is a metaphor (geez verse 2 is complex cryptic) but commenting on all the metaphors would be writing a book.

I think you’re pretty much there with the meaning behind the song, chlorine is both cleansing but can also be toxic, depending on the dosage - and that’s related to the subject matter of their songs, the subject matter can be toxic, the source of his creativity is often toxic but the chemicals of the music is cleansing. The music video is just a big metaphor for their whole creativity process, Ned (the creature) won’t jump in to the pool until there is just the right amount of chlorine - just the right mix of toxicity and cleansing power. And at the end the pool is empty again, the cycle begins again.

My 7 yr old loves reaction videos. Now, I know why! Watching the video with someone who can appreciate the music is cool. Hearing your interpretation is enlightening, as well! Building a song is like filling a pool. A dirty, half empty pool. Making it acceptable for anything to swim in. He starts with a cup. As you can see, the area surrounding the pool is total crap which I think is a metaphor for our world today and maybe Tyler’s psyche. Maybe Josh’s too. Josh seems to be just fine hanging with Tyler in a place most of us would not try to swim! When he feels he can “leave his skin on the floor” (a line from Shy Away) he is FINALLY done with the song. The pool is acceptable by Ned which would mean finished and album ready. Josh helps cause josh is a beast and Tyler knows it which is why he lets him push the “drum” that’s full of chlorine. I could go on and on. Cascading piano that pours in mid song!!!! Gets me every time. Then Tyler starts all over again. Begins a new song with just one cup. He looks exhausted. No wonder they took a break! This is my favorite top song.

"Eric Stockman" and "Tina Bagheri" commented with a song recommendation about HYPE original followed by HYPE- BERLIN LOCATION SESSIONS and I'm commenting on them to say Yes!!- totally recommend what they're recommending. Why? There's a very good reason people are suggesting the combo. The redo of the song is AMAZING BEAUTIFUL difference (really huge difference) but even more amazing experience if you see it after the original. The contrast... You wouldn't regret it. Ok here’s my theory on the furball- this video was filmed whilst they were on tour in Australia. We have something here called a Bunyip, no one is 100% sure what they look like. They habit Billabongs, pools of water left after a river turns to a different path. I think Ned (said fur ball) wanted a cleaner environment than the dirty, probably polluted billabong & befriended Tyler & Josh, becoming a fan due to their creative likeness & the fact they helped him clean up his home. A life long friendship was born. Mark (reel bear media) confirmed that Ned was Australian in a tweet or something (can’t remember exactly). This is my story & I believe it to be true😝😜

NED!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It’s his creativity This is what I think all of it means. People may disagree, but that’s ok. Think about it this way. I am an artist, but sometimes I have no inspiration and can’t draw or paint. Ned, the fur ball, comes and goes, as in maybe an idea for a song, but then nope and retreats. Once the pool is filled, Ned does a cannonball into it. I believe that’s when Tyler is finally inspired to write on his paper maker. If you notice, before Ned goes into the pool, then jumps in, he has small horns. There’s a clip showing him swimming and his horns have grown. I take that to mean his creativity is back, because the chlorine has rejuvenated his creativity as is now in fully creative mode. I love it! “Furball” 😂😂😂😂
