Twenty-One (21) Wind Turbines - Controlled Demolition, Inc.
Ғылым және технология
The General Contractor and the Main Demolition Contractor (Central Surplus) contacted Controlled Demolition, Inc. (CDI) in July of 2021, to assist them with the fast-track felling of twenty-one (21), 3 MW Wind Turbines that were being retired and decommissioned in west central Texas.
Upon Notice to Proceed, CDI immediately began to fabricate the specialty explosives needed to match the shell thickness and radius of these Units. Once the Wind Farm Owner deenergized the Units and oils were completely removed, CDI mobilized to the site and worked quickly with Central Surplus to pre-prepare the Wind Turbine Units in consideration of their 105-meter (345’) hub height and the forecast windspeed and direction, so that CDI’s felling crew could move quickly to take advantage of favorable winds for felling specific Units throughout the Wind Farm.
CDI laid out and monitored preparations for a week before mobilizing CDI’s explosives crew to fell all twenty-one (21) Units over a 2-day period. The Main Demolition Contractor will remove debris from the felled structures, recycling as much material as possible, before restoring the site for return to the wind farm Owner’s control.

Talk about breaking wind!
What happens to the 2000 tons of concrete and steel under the ground that hold these towers up?
Why were these particular wind turbines removed and what happens to the parts afterwards?
I do wind turbine blade demolition in the San Francisco area but never a whole tower. I know that a lot of the shorter towers were removed so they could get the wind from higher up. These look more modern. Why don't they reuse the tower and put all new components on them?
I replaced dozens of blade pitch proportioning valves in those turbines back in the day. And hundreds of gallons of hydraulic oil and zillions of O-rings. The first turbines I worked on that had man lifts in them, previously everything I climbed was just a ladder. Sorry to see them go.

So , the renewable energy needs renewing , looks like an expensive alternative.
21? That common core math?
Revenge of the birds! :) Great controlled demolition as usual CDI.
Nuclear's looking better as a power source. Sierra Club approved.
I see that the cutting charges were positioned in relation to the wind. So you made a cut on about half of the circumference of the base, toward the wind. And then just wait for the wind ( and gravity ) to work for you. Nice
We’ve got to think of a better way to reuse these turbines. We must make them modular so we don’t have to keep blowing them up.
@freighter1097
2 жыл бұрын
As someone who has built them, they are modular. The tower is 3 to 5 sections depending on the height and model. The nacelle, hub and 3 blades are all independent pieces as well. It would also take days to disassemble things down to replace a nacelle or tower section. Then another week or two to recommission all the components. Doable? Yes. Efficient? Not when you can replace the entire thing and recycle the old one.
Off to the landfill they go!
And that's the way we save the planet! Very green!
21 huh? Guess I can't count!
Great work. Awesome!
Sounds like good pre-felling work and subsequent mobilization and felling. Great work!

Its cool to see how they crumple from the blades first then just explode

These look like fairly old turbines and all machines have a service lifetime, but any idea how old?

They only have a life span of 20 years or so. I just recently learned this. When they first started talking about turbines back in the '80s and '90s, no ever discussed their longevity.

When they get old and fully depreciated, they take them down and replace them with the newer generation of higher output and lower maintenance costs.

Lifespan is over. In the last decade those machines were made much more effective, so it's a simple calculation with the result it's better to invest in more powerful ones in the same spot than to maintain the old ones.

These are the biggest waste ! All this stuff goes into landfills nothing is recycled except the copper something! Why can’t they reuse the base tower and the generator housing ,and or the generator itself? But they don’t ! This is not green in any matter !

Blades and nacelle canopy go into landfill, the rest is recycled. Shame to see this demolished, if disassembled properly most parts can be refurbished. But guess the owner did not want to spend the money on crane rent and heavy transport.
i know lets build them in the inner suburbs
Thank God ! Keep up the good work!
What a waste of a good generator. My question is why???
Simultaneously would have been better.
More debris to permanently clutter up the landfills.
All of that fiberglass going into it's own private little landfill. How's that "green" taste now?
Now post the video of you picking up all those fiberglass scraps in that field. Oh wait. It's Texas. Environmental quality standards don't exist.
but but but they are so eco friendly and so good lol
These are not old Wind turbines! What an absolute waste why could these of not of been repaired or had extended life service
So much for your green energy.
The birds are happy, but seriously, look at the waste of resources by taking these things down. Can't they be retrofitted with newer components?
Not even 20 years old
Well it's was a good start, but looks like you have plenty left to go. When you finish, we got a bunch a the gd things here in PA you can take care of.
take em all down
Sofar for green energy....blasting turbines for sure is not green at all. They could have at least tried to reuse the structure of the tower and replace the turbine. Now you are left with a conrete base in the ground...This is a realy bad example of non reusability of existing "green" infrastructure. I am not even speaking of all the debris flying around, how many of that fine debris will not be removed by a cleanup?
Looks just like AOC's green new deal. Sorry I had to.
Yessir, good drop. Can you imagine all of these piled up at the landfill? They can't be recycled (fiberglass). Not so green, huh?

You evidently share a lpt of people's sentiment. Vile things. A massive knee jerk reaction to eliminating fossil fuels. They don't tell you how many thousands tonnes of concrete go into the bases. Now if I am correct concrete is in top 5 polution of our planet. Blow them all up. Wind turbine syndrome..... Apparently all in our heads???? A bit like Doctors promoting cigarettes in the 50s. Its a joke.
The birds will be happy without having to dodge those blades.
Wonderful to see them go - they should never have been built in the first place. But it hasn't touched the giant slabs of underground concrete that supported them. What will happen to the concrete?
Not so green after all
😅😂🤣Hopefully many more to come in the future. The investors who bribe lawmakers for taxpayer payouts to build these things would be wise to invest in other LLCs to dismantle these. Win-win for them, lose-lose for taxpayers.

Good! Get rid of all these God awful monstrosities!!
Just think of all the oil burned in making the hundreds of yards of concrete, the fuel burned by the heavy equipment to dig the foundation, the crane transport to the site, and all the support vehicles. The steel, the rebar and tower, all that steel had to be manufactured, transported, fabricated, and then transported again to the job site. The blades.....lots of toxic epoxy, which takes a lot of electric ovens to cure, plus the fibreglas production, transportation etc. All these various steps, not to mention all of the personal transportation requirements of the hundreds or thousands of workers required, required a lot of old school oil in one way or another. The gen pub just sees the finished product and goes "oh, free energy."

Great use of money.
that's why wind doesn't work.
I thought wind turbines were good for a 100 years as the internals could be swapped out easily as they got worn..at least that was what we were sold. The greenest energy on the planet.....
The virgin wind turbine vs the chad demolition charge. Winner chad demolition charge.
But the environmentalists said wind and solar is the future...
