At tailors exam we have to make everything in one day! So I know the pressure. But you did a very nice job! I love how the pattern matches both legs! And basting is everything!

As a former cosplayer I know the feeling far too well. I made a lot of stuff within a day and today I regret it because I was wasting a lot of ressources on pieces that I couldn't wear or use outside of this specific context. Nowadays I invest the Time to produce pieces I can wear over and over again.

Oh, I always, ALWAYS need a gap between significant steps in the making, to give various "WHAT ARE YOU DOING, THAT'S NOT A PAIR YOU JUST CUT YOU MUPPET"-type subconscious awarenesses an airing. Beautiful pattern-matching!

I made a dress in a day that I've now taken apart and remade 4 times because it just never seems quite right. 😂 This is quite impressive, looks like trousers in a day was a good decision actually!

I want to share it with you. In order for the result to be more successful, it is better to make a sample model from some fabric, such as an old sheet. Then put it on yourself, make adjustments and only after that cut the main fabric. But even in this case, trying to make a dress in one day is not a good idea. Just saying. The result will be excellent. I wish you all the best. 🙋🏼‍♀️

This brought back a memory for me. Forty five years ago, when I was 15, I made myself a pair of trousers. Maybe it is time I did so again.

Looks great and clearly fits well. We have sort of lost touch with the comfort of having clothes that fit our bodies. Women actually have it worse because of more curves. But waist and inseam (to the nearest 2 inches) just does not do us justice.

As a man I can tell you that finding pants that fit properly and are comfortable, that is something I have yet to find.

Women's fast fashion patterning is an utter disgrace. I think the idea that women are "harder to fit because they have curves" is a myth, to be fair. I've found men have just as much body diversity but it's much more widely ignored, probably because women's clothing is designed to be more revealing-- and women's bodies are far more scrutinised. Then major style changes are forced in women's fashion at a much more rapid pace, leading to even poorer-quality manufacture. Your average man's clothes fit appallingly, and I think we just notice it less because we don't police men's bodies quite as much. (But I also think social stigma plays a big part in pushing "men's bodies are all similar and have no curves". You'll find men's big and tall everywhere, but men's petit doesn't even exist-- despite maybe twice as much of the male population being under 5'9" as over 6'2". And nature gave my partner a fantastic, full backside. He gets the dreaded waistband gap too!)

Try a mens pattern! Ive found they actually fit better in terms of practicality rather than simply looking decorative. The last womens trousers pattern I tried seemed to assume I was infact Kim Kardashian. You have to downsize though. As a medium female I fit a men's small.

@@shawnflynn1713 Agreed! There is one brand that does selvedge denim and they fit me exactly the way I would want. They are a bit lower in the rise, but damn... they are the closest thing I could find!

So love the fact that you perfectly matched the lines in the fabric. It seems no commercial maker does that at all any more and nothing says good quality and attention to details like perfectly matched pattern lines. Beautiful job Niklas!

Nice trousers! And good timing, just came to the realization after a winter of searching store to store, that the only way to get tweed pants I like is to get the fabric and sew them myself, sigh!

WOW. Very impressive. I dabbled a little in sewing when I was in 9th grade and made some dresses and some shorts. But I'd like to learn to sew properly. So impressed by those who know how to sew. Great job here!

Great job! Reminds me of that time 20 years ago when I made 9 pair of cream Oxford bags for the men (including myself) in my 1920s dance orchestra in 6 days. Worse thing was it was over 30°C most of the week. I adapted a commercial zoot suit pattern using one of my old tailoring books as this was quicker than redrafting a pattern for each player. One pair wasn’t quite as good as I would have chosen, but overall they weren’t too bad. I could only afford to use gabardine (which I regret), but I did include shaped turn-ups, double pleats, in-seam pockets and a button fly in each. Making so many at once meant I could save time making all the flies/pockets/belt loops etc at once - so long as everything was labelled. Like you, I did cheat and use the buttonhole attachment on my machine rather than hand finishing the buttonholes. But with that many button flies I never would have finished in time. I also made a dozen real bow ties all adjustable in a green silk. I had hoped to also knit pullovers to wear for this daytime uniform (inspired by a photo of the Jack Hylton Band) but never got to that. We ended up having to disband in 2011 because of the global economic recession.

Good video and nice trousers. I bought 70 year old wool plaid fabric from a bazaar as I loved the fabric. The original receipt from 1952 was attached. Also the fabric is very thick. Then I decided to make trousers out of it using a vintage pattern - though I never made trousers before. I pretty much decided to skip rear pockets and belt keepers. I do not use rear pockets and felt it would be much too difficult for me to get them right especially given how thick this fabric is. For the waist I plan adding side adjusters as I have two spare side adjusters. This pair shows they can look fine without rear pockets. The inseam pockets save time too. I guess that just means the front pieces need to be about 5-6 cms wider at the top. Is it easier to sew a zip fly, or a button fly? I recently finished a pair of simple cotton shorts which included my first zip and first button hole. The zip was not too difficult and it seemed like the one buttonhole gave me more trouble.

I'd price those at $350 labor and reasonable materials, for a quality pair of pants, hand made, that fit well and look great, that's a steal. 1/4 the price of a pair from a bespoke tailor and you get the satisfaction of having made them yourself.

I just bought a pair of high waisted wool blend pleated pants off eBay and they were from about 3-4 years ago. But what was disappointing was the loose knit wool blend fabric and kind of like a sweater material that piles up easy. I was ready to get a few pleated pants and my first one I didn’t expect the cheaper wool blended fabric that piles up easy. I mean decades ago, even buying low end wool pleated pants, the fabric would be mostly wool and a tigher suit like fabric. So now with fast fashions, you get the look of expensive clothing, but made out of cheaper fabrics. Which is annoying bc I’m a boomer and been into clothing since the early 80’s and quality meant also great fabrics and not just mimic great fabrics. Also, do you still crease pleated pants or leave without a crease? Nice job making your own pants! I’m always amazed at how clothing is made and how some can make it so easily. Bc it seems so much details go into making clothes or well made clothes.

I have made pants just like these for my son, with buttons...but i seem to remember it taking a whole afternoon to do just the fly and buttons, as I had never done it before and I was just sewing by looking at existing pants. amazing.

Wie lange hast du dich mit Schneiderarbeiten auseinandergesetzt, bevor du dich an ein eigenes Projekt gewagt hast? Hast du die Schnittmuster Selbst hergestellt nach den Proportionen aus dem Buch und den Maßen deiner Beine? Ist wirklich gut geworden! Mein Größter Respekt dafür.

When you said "I'm making buttonholes on the fly" it turns out to be true both literally and figuratively.

Oh, that more men should be so self sufficient with their clothes and dress with such style! Sigh. The pants and the (overly dramatic) whole outfit is wonderfully masculine; rugged but stylish. Very nice! I think the only thing I've ever made in a day was a mess!

And i will probably take more than a month for mine if the west is any indication :D

Wow those trousers turned out amazing. I am looking at getting into making men’s clothing as my husband is moving towards a more classic British style. I have made a dress in a day once and it was ok but could have been better.

The trousers came out great. The fit is just perfect and I love it so much. I wish I could make my own cloths, but let’s be honest: I’m not cut out for that - no pun intended. I cannot even draw or cut a straight line, not to mention that I cannot sew. Furthermore, I am lazy - I was laughing when you wrote that you were being lazy in the video. I can teach you what lazy means. - and I do not have much free time at the moment. Nevertheless, It would be a great idea for me to make my own cloths since I cannot find anything that I really like in shops or even online. The problem is that either the quality is very poor (polyester has taken over) or the price is very high. I know what you think. If you are poor and lazy, you are doomed. And you are so right. What can I say? I hope I will get better in the future. What I would like to stress here is that I like the way you dress so much - I’ve probably told you a million times, even if you probably don’t remember. I like that you wear vintage pieces - and they suit you so well - without looking like you came out from a history book - it is meant to be a compliment. That’s the kind of style I aim at achieving. Congratulations on your talent to choose, make and wear amazing clothes. :)

3 years ago I couldn't sew on a button. With just a few KZread videos as a coach, I have now made three 3 piece suits and they fit too. Go for it, you never know until you try.

Yes. I have the same problem. I have so many ideas for clothes. For daily wear 1890-1920s menswear and from many older eras for occasions. I just admire those abilities to actually sew something. It's one of the most incomprehensible things for me on this earth :-D. I'm happy if I manage to sew in a button. That's the most I can do. I'm extremely butter fingered and impatient. Just while watching this video the whole process felt to be sooo extremely hard and complicated for me. The more videos about sewing I tried to watch, the harder it seems to me, and I'm becoming less and less motivated to try it :-D. Yet I love suits, vintage and historical clothing. And my budget isn't very good aswell. I'm trying to buy what I can afford but it's really hard. Often have problems with fit etc. So you're really not alone in that.

Almost, fastest was a kind of unlined mantelet from five upcycled fabric aprons. Took me another day to figure out the bias binding stuff, but now it's complete for spring! neat trousers, btw. Could you find some vintage suit maker's handbook?

The trousers are gorgeous and your dramatic styling, I absolutely loved! I just found a grey antique wool sweater for my son like that! So the trousers would be a great addition but never in a day. I am a very slow sewist. Do you wear silk long underwear or something to not have the tweed be itchy? Do you line them or it isn't a comfort problem? I love sewing for my sons as it's easier than sewing for me and my older one loves vintage

On my wardrobe making journey I've discovered men's trouser patterns are far superior to women's patterns. Female patterns seem cut merely to show off the curves without considering whether this makes a practical active garment. Ive now got a McColls mens "costume" pattern and the trousers fit me (female) much better than the one for women I tried before. As I said to my mum, I want trousers I can do things in,not just for showing off my ar$e!

Looks good! It appears that they might be slightly tight for braced trousers though. High rise, braced trousers should be loose enough that they would fall down without the braces.

Does anyone know if he has ever mentioned possibly publishing the English version of his book physically? I know you can get it as an ebook, but something about the act of crafting makes me want to consult physical resources.

Personnaly my trousers take days or weeks to be completed probably because I'm not that efficient and obsessed by doing every visible stitches by hand, anyway.
