In this video:

Totally agree with the thrifting being more expensive now. It used to be the only place for me to get clothes growing up, now a jacket is twice as expensive as something I can get new if I'm smart.

Smaller independent shops( not goodwill etc) I've been mainly hiring estate sales in nice neighborhoods where they want to get rid of the stuff more than make money. Go first day to scope out out for nessessary treasures and go back on the last day at closing time for last minute bargains. In my area they are usually done by older volunteers so I offer to haul the unsold stuff to go I will in exchange for some choice items

I have a naturally sort of classic/old fashioned look about me to begin with, my face and hair are. I'm also really into old movies. When twee rolled around I was actually quite happy that for once there was a fashion that suited me. I never dressed like it 100%, never went overboard with it, but I found a lot of inspiration in it. I still mix lots of pieces into my wardrobe now. One day I may wear cargo pants and a short tshirt, and then I'll wear something twee-ish the next. I don't think it has anything to do with being a good girl. Certainly the whole twee thing was no more silly than wearing union jacks everywhere, body glitter, 80s sprayed hair and aerobics fashion, bullet bras, drop waist dresses and whatnot. I think the key is finding a fashion that suits you, that clicks with you, and mix it up your way. I did own some Peter Pan collars, but haha not ever woodland creatures! Where on earth did that come from:)))

You mentioning ModCloth rocketed me back to senior year of high school (2013-2014 for me) where this girl in one of my English elective classes went on this extended speech about the site because someone asked her where she got the dress she was wearing that day (and looking back she was definitely one of those twee girls).

🤣 awesome! what did the dress look like? There was a '50s-ish cherry dress that stood out in my mind and I saw it on everyone (online, that is).

@@teresachaotic.corner I don’t even remember what the dress itself looked like, but she was one of those people who dressed in “quirky” colors. Like blue-leaning greens rather than “true” greens, burgundy, she liked brown leather (and/or faux leather). I think it was maybe kind of a t-shirt dress?

I have been trying to get through all the videos to catch up to current. I really like the style topics. An idea for you- one on the changes in accessories. How hats gloves and scarves were the norm but now can be seen sparingly.

Oh my gosh. This brought me back so many memories! As a 33 year-old, I also used to own Modcloth, ugly ballet flats, woodland patterns, love for Sofia Coppola. Boy, how much I wanted to get along with the artsy crowd in high school 🤣 I grew up in hipster town of Portland, so these motifs are very nostalgic to me. Also, Virgin Suicides aesthetic impacted so much of what I like to this day. I'm still trying to be one of the Lisbon girls even in my 30's.

Twee embodies my aesthetic and my soul, the focus on creativity and timelessness, whimsy and imagination are so heartwarming in what sometimes feels like a cold, individualistic world. Also the 60s are my favorite fashion era and Twee is very inspired by the 60s so another reason to love it!

Teresa gets it more than she knows. I've seen this first twee trend critiqued for how much it emphasized doll-like thinness, to the point of being potentially unhealthy, so it seems kind of apt that she was shopping in the kids section successfully for it and now the first cycle of twee dresses don't fit her. As for the mustache, I think it might have been a reference to some jokey modern artists and also a gender-bending joke. Besides, there is some knowing self-mockery going on--what is more retro and hipster than a weird handlebar mustache?! Mustaches for all! I think around this time I went to a "Mustache party" at a little vintage shop where everyone made or painted on costume mustaches. Long live twee. Vintage never was an inexpensive way to shop - the used stores that are actually cheap don't tend to be vintage hotspots, but no matter. Vintage is worth riffing through for the quality and creativity. And the basic idea of trying to do feminine and fun, child-like clothing without killing our backs with torture shoes or worrying overly about clothing causing undue body exposure -- that all works for good reasons.
