I like your method for determining the neck back angle. Nice and easy!

Wow this could not have come at a better time. I agreed to take on this mutt of a build. My client already had someone build a guitar body. It’s based on an SG shape modified to eventually be a wolf head after he has it painted. He wanted me to build a neck for it. The problem is the tune o matic bridge is already mounted as well as the pickups and the neck pocket has been routed fender style 5/8” and flat, no angle. I’ve been rolling this around in my head the past couple days and this really helps me to get that proper neck angle. Thank you!

I think fitting the neck straight into the pocket, then cutting the angle on the top of the neck would be a lot easier. Of course that has to be done before the neck taper and head-stock angle are cut. Well, that's the way I do them.

Going good mate, ive always put the angle in the neck pocket, might give this way a go, its a good example of different method same result i suppose.

You may have done some corrections of camera, but better safe than sorry, so I’ll just chip in. When you measured out your break angle, your MDF stick was below the top surface of your body, from the looks of it, making the edges of your fretboard level with the top. Since your neck sits flush, and you the ad the fretboard thickness, you will be adding the difference in height over your bridge, which means your angle could be too steep. You will of course be doing dry fits and so on, so no doubt you will catch it if the angle should be off a bit, but just to be on the safe side, I thought I’d flag it anyway.

There were a few off camera moments on this one!! To be honest there is often a difference between what gets filmed and what gets built but I always try and keep things as real as I can. I have double checked the final angle and it's pretty much spot on.

hi patrick. another beauty coming along. i noticed that your bandsaw cut was removing material from the top part of the heal but was tapering slightly away from the piece on the lower part of the cut. picky i know but you might want to check to be sure the bandsaw table is absolutely square to the blade. especially liked the tip about using body filler to get an exact fit in the neck pocket. brilliant!

I'm pretty sure the table is square, I think the 1/4" blade was a bit weedy for that cut, it's a bit dull. I probably should have put a 1/2" blade in.

Hi ! It's interesting, that you shape both pocket & heel as if it would be a bolt-on type ! Can you tell us why ? Is it easier this way ?

This is how Gibson built the juniors with a full width, tapered neck joint. Some say this is what gives them their tone but I don't know how true that is.

So, for Les Paul Standards or SG's you would not use this method?

Makes me wonder, given that there is some scope for adjustment, that it might be worth rounding the measured angle to the nearest say half degree?

  • @Adventuresfromtheshedofdreams

  • @Adventuresfromtheshedofdreams

I didn't actually measure the angle just went from the mark. The only issue with rounding is too little is a bad thing, too much not so much of a problem so don't round down :)
