TV-am clip (30/1/88)

Ойын-сауық

There's an Australian theme to this TV-am clip from (we think) Saturday, 30th January, 1988, as we come in on a story about a koala hospital (for, not run by) and end with Anne Diamond and Mike Morris presenting from Bondi Beach. In addition, we've got Michaela Strachan showing the Bat Mail ahead of an episode of Batman and talking about the so-called Short Tennis competition before an episode of Happy Days. Meanwhile Down Under, there's an interview with one Terry Ryan, vice president of the Surf Lifesaving Club or something, plus a report on the subject from none other than Kay Burley. (Yes, that one.)
We're really spoiling you with four ad breaks in this clip. T-Bag fans will have to be sharp-eyed, but that Milky Bar ad features Diana Barrand, a.k.a. Holly-Anna Jones, while Spatz fans (and, you know, a few other shows) may spot Sam Womack, a.k.a. Samantha Janus, in that MediQuest one. Other highlights include a McDonald's Hamburglar ad, a couple of oh-so-hip cool and funky Casio ones, a really pointless-looking tennis game starring Gus Hedges from Drop the Dead Donkey, City Girl Sindy, and what seems to be a blatant Scalextrics rip-off, but I could be wrong there. Do you remember Construx? I remember the ad, and I remember thinking they looked quite good, but I never had any and never knew of anyone who had any. I'm not convinced I ever saw them in a shop, either. Did anyone ever come across them in the wild?
Grateful thanks to Ben for providing this recording - please take the time to check out / benriggers when you get the chance.

The reason why they were doing the show from Australia, was because it was a way around the crisis situation between the management and the staff who were locked out in the strike action. I don't know the ins and outs of the legal wrangling and whatnot, but the upshot is that it got GMB back on air with a full and professionally produced service using an all Aussie crew. Of course, manager Bruce Gyngell had lots of connections within the Aus TV industry, so it was easy for him to make these arrangements at short notice. Meanwhile, in London, talks were being held to try and resolve the situation. Just over a fortnight later, all the staff supporting the strike are sacked and it's from this point that the service began to slowly build back into a full operation once again. Anne Diamond doesn't see the year out as a presenter, quitting her role November.

Thanks for the extra info! It seems a bit extreme to go all the way to Australia just to circumvent industrial action, but I suppose that's the 80s in a nutshell...

@@VideotapeFTW An earlier attempt at getting round the missing expertise problem, was a special series of programmes from Walt Disney World, in Florida, filmed using Disney's own cameras. The series, pre recorded, was called "Have a Nice Day Britain". Only part of it was ever shown, as TV-am abandoned the series, due to official complaints, that it was a wholesale plug for the American resort. The Australian series, G'day Britain, was filmed using cameras belonging to Channel 9. That was because Nine's owner, Kerry Packer, had a stake in TV-am, so it made sense to use Nine's facilities. During this time, sometime TV-am linked G'day Britain and other programming with In vision continuity. Trish Williamson done a few links.

@@ClydebridgeStation Thanks for that. It's unbelievable the lengths they went to at the time of the strikes. I mean, flying halfway around the world is an extreme solution to any issue, but this...

This clip features part of the Australian Bicentennial celebrations. Around this time Anne Diamond interviewed Australian TV stars while she was down under. Might you have any of these interviews on tape? I have some poor-quality recordings on my channel, but there were many more.

I don't think so, but I'm still going through everything. The longest Australia clip I can do at the moment is Timmy Mallett going around the country and chatting to a load of non-famous Australians: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qqicm9uvfqeuYdY.html
