Initially I was worried this channel was just going to be an extension of the Sean we've seen in h3h3 appearances but I'm really enjoying watching him doing his own thing great work can't wait to see more videos here on this channel

Proud to be a stinker!
I'm so glad you made this channel. Your musical education and interests is so fascinating. Shaving the different ends of the pendulum to tune was my favourite part.
You did a really good job of explaining all the tools and material. Your already turning pro with your videos Sean :)
Great video, keep it up Sean!
Great work, Sean!
wow sean great moves keep it up proud of ya
i don't know why but crafting videos are relaxing, and plus you added a bit of Sundanese song in it.
Great video! Enjoyed watching how it was made
i dont know why but i think its funny when sean gets angry for some reason.
Karinding is typical Sundanese Indonesian
Great explained...great job
Awesome and original vid! entertaining!
Thank you very much for sharing, the sound is magic. I don't have bamboo around, I want to try to make it with Arundo Donax (common cane). Could you tell me the measurements?

Amazing! ❤️

Do we can make karinding by using cocking knife ?
So this is what a Jew's Harp is! For some reason, I had thought it was just another name for a kind of lyre. Loving the channel too. Could you do a video sometime about living in Israel and some bits about Israeli culture?

The knife is a pisau raut. It translates to "expression knife". Just about any knife will do, though.
This is really cool... Im especially intrigued by the knife you are using... I know its an Indonesian traditional carving knife..... But Id really like to see some info about this and how it is sharpened/used/ made..... I cant find any info about it... just seeing people using it... Once again, very cool vid...

Hi Sean - having a go at making these in NZ - so far working okay but mine seems very quiet compared to yours - any clues on what creates more volume?

Happy to hear it. I had the same problem starting out. So much of crafting these things is trial and error. The most easy to address is probably quality of source material. Using large diameter bamboo poles at least 5 years old is ideal. Would you benefit from a video of how to process poles for carving?
@SeanStinks
5 жыл бұрын
One of the biggest lessons I learned was to conserve as much material on your harp as possible prior to tuning. So, cutting through each of the lamela's three sides, while leaving as small a gap as possible between it and the frame is crucial. The ideal width of the gap is as thick as two human hairs. It ridiculously tough but getting as close as you can puts you in a good position. Upload some pics to imgur and link them if you hve a chance. I'd like to see your work.

@@SeanStinks I'd love to see how to process poles! I have a source of latta flora -(spelling?) which is thick walled timber bamboo / I took a dry piece and split it then sanded it with an orbital sander to get it to a bit thicker than an eighth inch / cut to your approx dimensions....

Hello, which kind of bamboo do you use? I did not understand very well, and to me it is difficult to find bamboo. I have tried with kitchen tools made of bamboo, but I am not sure if it is good for making jaw harps. Is bamboo in general fragile?
@SeanStinks
6 жыл бұрын
The two species I use in these tutorials are gigantochloa verticillata and gigantochloa atroviolacea. However, any bamboo with thick walls, a diameter of 2.5" or more, and from a pole at least 1.5 years old will work best. Ornamental bamboo is not suitable for this kind of crafting. I wouldn't repurpose storebought bamboo products, just because I don't know what kind of chemical processing it has undergone.

For the long cut would it be easier and quicker to use a die grinder with a thin wheel ? And a tiny die to do the cut at the end? I dont like working with knives 😂
@SeanStinks
3 жыл бұрын
I make an effort to use hand tools and stick as close to the traditional crafting methods as possible. That said, I would be worried the lack of control, in terms of power, over the grinder would split the bamboo lengthwise. It might work, though. I'll see if I can find a Dremel or something similar and try it out.
Beautiful! How long is the process??

321What Is This song is Kacapi/Suling in Cianjuran style, meaning it comes from Cianjur province of West Java, between Bandung and Bogor. It's a very beautiful mountainous region. The song itself is I think called 'Ilang' which may be referring to an aromatic tree whose flowers are used to make perfume.

That would be useful to do a how-to video . Do you order the bamboo from a web site? This looks like a hobby l might be able to do l need the tools also.
@SeanStinks
5 жыл бұрын
@@scottpatterson7798 you can order poles from many bamboo nurseries all over the US. I prefer to go there and check them for quality and unique patterns. A 5 or 6 foot pole of timber bamboo can be processed into ~75 work-ready strips. I'll put together a video on the process for you. As far as tools go, all you need is a hacksaw, a heavy duty box cutter, sand paper, and a tuner or tuning app if you have a smartphone. Add a chisel or hatchet if you are splitting your own poles.

There is a place in Ca. Called Frank's that sells bamboo planks l don't know if it's suitable for building harps? Website is franks supply.com maybe you could check it out if you don't mind?
It's similar to dan moi
when i look up "jew's harp," it looks different from karinding, jew's harp being more metallic/copper while karinding is made from bamboo. is there are difference between the two other than what they are made from, like the sounds and how they are played? and when and how did you become interested in karinding? i never heard about this instrument (and from jew's harp) before I checked out your etsy website.

From what I understand, iron and steel harps tend to come from Appalachia, Europe and East Asia, while Brass and other metals from SE Asia and Oceania. I don't know of any harps from Africa or South America, but I am sure they are out there. These are bamboo, but they are all very similar to each other. Some have better sustain, some a more organic sound. Their play style is different from metal to wood as well. They all have pros and cons if you are thinking about being a more serious player. I would suggest trying each kind to find what you like best. They are all the same in that they are lamellophones as well as idiophones. They are both wind and percussion instruments. You the player get to form the resonator and change the shape of the sound with your mouth and throat. I think that's pretty damn cool. I studied at a traditional arts university in Bandung. That's where I learned and became really interested in these instruments. I'd like to try making metal styles in the future but there are more bamboo ones out there for me to conquer first.
thank you for uploading some indonesian thing

@@SeanStinks it works but it makes a very weak sound. Not loud enough to be heard i guess
@SeanStinks
4 жыл бұрын
@@broscrew6286 it will take you some time to get the process down, I probably failed on 10 harps before I made my first successful instrument. Even then, the sound was poor and instrument was unbalanced. I don't think its reasonable to expect a perfect example after only making a few harps. At this point, I have made hundreds and am very consistent with my resulting instruments. I think its more a matter of making mistakes and identifying where to improve your crafting method. Of course I am willing to help, but continuing to fail and improving after each effort is going to be your best teacher. So, show me your harps and maybe I can explain where you are can improve.
