Tutorial: How to Hand Sew Patches

Ойындар

This is a tutorial on how to sew patches by hand. Hope you all learn something and enjoy! Sorry for the crappy camera work, it's hard to sew with one hand and record with the other...

Very helpful tutorial. I just sewed on my first patch only by watching this video. Some things that I discovered that weren’t mentioned are: 1. Make sure that all the thread goes through the hole when pulling it through. 2. Make sure to tie off your thread when you’re done with the patch. 3. Always end your last stitch with the needle facing inside so the knot isn’t visible. 4. You need about a FULL arm span length of thread to sew on a normal sized patch

1:52 for the cloth patch I would recommend to Sew 5 mm distance from the Edge. 2:56 measure the length of all sides of the patch and then Take 1.5 times the amount. This way you will have enough to Finish it without having to Take a Second thread. Synthetic Fiber thread is more durable than Cotton thread. The knot should be bigger than the Diameter of the needle so that it can Not Slip through the hole. I would always begin at the Back of the patch so that the knot ist secured and can Not be damaged which would lead to unravelling of the sewing. The length of the stitches should be at Most 8mm.

The double stringy idea helped me out massively, no unintended knots on the string, no intended knots securing the thread to the needle coming undone and no strings braking. First I thought my needle was too small (pun not intended, but feel free to giggle) comparing it to yours, but staying with my rather thin needle (makes smaller holes and), I have now done my back patch. Video on it will probably come when I have sown on all of my patches that I have (plus two more that suppose to be here in Sweden since monday...saturday now, but hasn't arrived yet, I live close to Stockholm, so the postal service should not take that long, wtf). Thank's a million! :D

OMG is it EVER time consuming! But I am doing this for a client so I'm going all out. All the patches have borders. There are like 17 patches, and the jacket is lined. So I opened the lining at the waist and I am sewing the patches only through the denim, by hand. I used blanket stitch for some patches, and whip stitch for others. I have to install like a thousand studs on the back, before I close the lining by hand again, too. So it's going to look awesome. I am using black Gutermann Extra strong thread, which I use to hand stitch and mend wool and leather coats. As for me, I stream, but don't do videos (yet?), but I have my webcam mounted on an adjustable lamp, and that hovers above my desk, looking down at what I'm working on. I know this video is from 2016 but whatever, maybe this will help you, or someone else :D

I recommend base stitching all patches, and if you want to do the baseball stitch thing do that as your follow up stitch with whatever color thread you desire, I got this band patch im bout to sew on its purple on black I got some thick purple thread to do the cool stitch w/ but Im first going to pin the patch in place and regular in and out stitch it in place as it will be the best, make sure you all pull the needle and thread all the way through each time and give it a lil tug to make sure its all snug, go around the whole perimeter on the inside of the boarder with matching thread and at the end to finish it off once youre sure the patch is well attached go under a stitch with the needle and make a loop, about face with the needle and through the loop do this atleast 3 times and then cut thread, your patch will not go any where and you can always move it, and then follow up with how ever else you want to style

He didnt iterate exactly what he meant with the thimble but use it on your finger you will be pushing the needle through the fabric with not the finger you will be feeling for the needle because you will have already moved it once you feel where the pressure is leading

Good stuff, one of the best videos I've seen on this. I've never tried doubling up the thread like that... so I see why mine is always breaking mid-sew and driving me crazy. I fucking hate sewing, but this gives me hope.
