Tutorial: How to do the Soul Slide on inline skates or rollerblades in 3-4 progressions

Спорт

Asha Kirkby from InlineSkateCourse.com teaches the Soul Slide from scratch (but if yours isn't sliding easily then returning to the beginning can help you discover why you aren't sliding).
The Soul Slide is a great skate stop which also acts as an impressive trick that few skaters actually master and use. It requires a certain amount of internal hip rotation and thigh/glutes strength simultaneously.
For more progression based teaching of multiple skills, check out the Free Trials available on www.InlineSkateCourse.com. The mentioned 'Backward Powerslide' is available in full lesson format here;

    Thank you so much, that means a lot. I think skating and teaching are different skills. I can teach a skill that I cannot even skate (for example my injury stops me doing a few moves). I've learned how to teach and I've kept developing my methods and testing new theories and improving as a teacher. With students who are willing to trust the process and who actually skate and practice, the results are very satisfying for everyone. Thank you for being part of that.

    It's great that you mentioned that it's important to seat low! Like it very much! I've just started doing consistent (though not perfect yet) soul slides. And apparently the key was sitting very low before starting the move. Also, the advice to put all weight on non-sliding leg before starting the move is great.

    Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. Yes, you need to sit down and stay really low. It requires a strong leg, to take about 90--95% of you weight. With practice you can sit a little higher, but not too much because the other leg still needs an acute angle in order to slide.

For now I am a "miracle" according to my surgeon who says I shouldn't be able to talk, skate or cycle and he doesn't understand how I'm not in agony all the time. Lots of yoga and physio maintenance and skating...... I'm doing great!

    Hi Asha, Love your tutorials and have learned a lot from you! Some constructive criticism is that the term "invert" may confuse some people as the hip generally has 6 movements (flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, internal/medial rotation and external/lateral rotation), of which the one shown in the video is internal rotation of the hip. To my knowledge the only joint in the body that inverts is the ankle and this can be performed by isolating movement at the the ankle joint and rolling over the outer edge of your sole from a neutral position. I understand that this was made a couple of years ago and we are always learning so you may already know this but if not, I hope it helps some!

    Excellent tutorial as always, Asha, thanks for listening to your followers. I've been practicing this and the magic for a few days and indeed, staying really low and having some flexibility is absolutely required. I'm still unable to put the sliding foot really perpendicularly to the support one but there's some sliding occurring. It was very awkward initially, and i couldn't really see myself using it on the street. But i'm getting more confident and able to stop at higher speed... One word...practice over and over again. Its brother the cess slide/parallel slide is seven more challenging...hard for me not to fall on the inner foot and if i put too much weight on my heels, i usually do more of a half spin... Anyway, thanks again. I'll try maybe to see you in New York..

    Indeed, the back powerslide and soul slide are important pre-requisites for the Hockey Stop / Parallel slide because if you can't slide 1 skate then sliding 2 is 1000x harder! Hope you can make it to New York. We'll nail it!

    Thank you for a very good step-by-step tutorial to the soul slide. Awesome that you translated it to English. One issue I had when starting practicing this one was that my legs separated. I finally learned that it’s really important to stay on your outside edge with your supporting leg. I hope you get well soon!

  • @SkatefreshVideos

    @SkatefreshVideos

    5 жыл бұрын

    Yes at first the centre edge is where to aim for (to keep you off the inside edge) and then with time and more confidence you can begin to go onto the outside edge (but make sure you don't do this too much, an excessive outside edge will not help you to put the majority of your weight there. Everything is very subtle. Your legs started to separate because your weight was somewhere in-between both legs (instead of mostly on the support leg). When all wheels are on the ground its very easy for your body to choose all the wheels as a "safe place" to balance. That's why we need progressions so we can gently help the body to do the right thing without risk. For more in-depth tutorials check out the Free trials on my new site; www.InlineSkateCourse.com

    Thanks for the tutorial, it's super helpful! My rear wheel is starting to wear down a lot from learning the slide though. Is it normal or am I transferring too much weight on my heel?

  • @SkatefreshVideos

    @SkatefreshVideos

    8 ай бұрын

    Yes, it is normal as the heel starts to slide first. Try and lighten the load on the sliding leg by bending more into the support leg and leaning away from the sliding skate. And route your wheels regularly. I say this because mine really need rotating.... I've noticed in the last 2 days but haven't done it yet!

    Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. For absolute beginners is better to ride no bigger than 4x84. The bigger the wheel the harder it is to control and stop. Besides, with big wheels you will have more problems related to pronation/supination. However, an absolute beginner can start with big wheels as long as the skate comes with a heel brake (or can be added), this is because big wheels produce speed easier and keep it longer, therefore you really need to know how to slow down and stop when necessary to avoid an accident. It's true that small wheels will make you feel tarmac imperfections a lot more than big ones, but consider that if you're a beginner you need to find smooth surfaces. Later you can skate almost everywhere but as a beginner you are more prone to stumble.

    Hi Asha and Sergio, if my left foot tends to collapse inside/ inwards- which direction do i adjust the frame on fr skates pls?

  • @SkatefreshVideos

    @SkatefreshVideos

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. The frame is placed by factory settings in the best place it can be, that place is related to where your toes are, it has nothing to do with fallen arches or other feet conditions. People think the lateral adjustment was made to solve pronation/supination. That's a misconception that have led people to even further problems, because it can create an imbalance between legs if done incorrectly. This adjustment was actually designed for speed competitors who need a very precise fine-tune. So our advice is to leave the frame where it is and work to solve the pronation/supination doing the scooter exercise that appears here kzread.info/dash/bejne/fJupy6OjlcnbgNo.html That's the way! In the worst scenario you may need to consult an orthopedic surgeon because some people (like me) also have this problem off-skates. In that case you will need to wear special insoles on and off skates and also do the scooter exercise. Once you get the proper stance by doing the exercise consciously for some weeks then you won't need to think about it, and your foot will not collapse. Being aware of your edge gives you a complete control to perform better and opens a whole world of tricks.

  • @SkatefreshVideos

    @SkatefreshVideos

    Жыл бұрын

    Yes wheel softness/hardnew can play a role but first always check your technique and ask yourself the following 2 questions; 1. Do you have 80-90% of your weight balanced on the non-sliding leg? Is that skate on a centre or slight outside edge? (You want a yes for both of those). 2. Is the angle of the wheels to the ground on the sliding skate less than 45 degrees (ie very tilted over)? Again you want a yes. Usually not all of these things are happening so sliding doesn't happen. Video yourself to help you answer these questions.

    Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. It certainly can! Lots of downhill and speed skaters use it, and it's Eddy Matzger's favorite way to stop, though he call it Front T-stop. The problem with slides in general is that they rely on the surface you are skating, some more than others of course.

    Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. Definitely the heel brake stop is the best stopping method for a beginner, even though you will find many people who were never able to figure it out and totally disregard it. The heel brake only requires you to have balance, all the other methods are quite demanding. As you progress and gain balance, strength, flexibility, etc. you add more and more ways to stop.

    NOT me. some guy said it's NOT the soul slide. it's called a reverse T stop, so should be easier. i would say, just do a 'L' (in front) or SOMETHING like that, NOT what poseurs do. the SOUL SLIDE is grinding the boot due to an extreme angle i hear. that would occur on a rail (like skateboarders do OR SOMETHING). I've NEVER done it -- "WILL HOLSEY 7 YEARS AGO not a soul slide. it's a reverse t stop. in order to call is a soul slide or the real version grind. you must tweak your soul foot enough to the ground that the boot is the part sliding which also means your groove/front foot doesn't need to go on the side first. all your "extreme skating" is old and is part of our trick list of cess slides in the real extreme/aggressive skating where all these names and tricks came from."
