    I had no idea a product like this even existed. I've always wanted to be able to cross stitch onto other materials, but thought the closest I could get was making a "patch"! Thanks for sharing! Can't wait to finish my current project and try this~

    I found your video after I was finished with the first part of my project on a flour sack towel. I had been stitching incorrectly on the waste canvas and was having a very hard time. Now I am doing the second part of my project correctly and it is so much easier. Thank you for your video! BTW I had some waste canvas from years ago and wanted to get some more. When I went to Michael’s and Hobby Lobby, no one knew what I was talking about. Their cross stitch sections have really shrunk.

I used to use this method when my daughters were little to jazz up cheap plain T-shirts, and at nursery school the children had to supply their own towels, it was a nice way to add their names to theirs.

    THANK YOU for this tutorial. Decades ago, when counted cross stitch was all the rage, I started to use waste canvas on a huge one color (black) horse head on a chambray shirt. While I loved the pattern, doing it in all black, and having to backtrack, redoing a row again and again made me quit. That was the last time I used that pattern and the last time I used waste canvas. Now I'm doing flannel baby blankets and thought a small pattern or 2 on a corner of the blanket would be cute on a solid colored blanket. And, reading through the comments helped me figure out where I can find the waste canvas.

    Katherine The Nintendo characters I stitch are personally charted by me from game sprites, and are not available as patterns. But you can really stitch anything on regular fabric using waste canvas. You can find lots of little designs online or in magazines, and you could add them to bags, shirts, handkerchiefs, pillowcases, etc. 😊

    Hey Sarah, thanks for this. I really want to try waste canvas and hope I can find it in my country! I was wondering about the copyrights of the mushroom. I just finished my first ever cross stitch project which was a full coverage picture of nintendo characters placed around according to my own design. I wanted to share it in a fb group but was told not to since the characters are protected by Nintendo copyright. What’s your take on this?

  • @StitchinMommy

    @StitchinMommy

    6 жыл бұрын

    I have understood that your finished stitching is okay to share or sell because you're selling your handiwork - your skill and the time it took you to make it. I don't think I would be able to sell Nintendo patterns in my shop because that would be more directly passing off the sprites and designs as my own. Does that make sense? I did come across a Disney cross stitch kit that specifically said that you couldn't sell the completed stitching. While I don't think they are technically allowed to restrict that, I haven't attempted to sell any completed Disney items because I don't want to risk it. I would think sharing a finished cross stitch project on FB should be fine, though. You're not trying to make money on it - you just want to show off your accomplishments! Every designer has a copyright on their designs, and yet we share our finishes all the time. I could see not sharing your pattern with others, but only using it for your own personal use. Anyway, if you've heard differently, please share your findings! :)

You can also find it online at amazon: amzn.to/2AqpQ8m, or various cross stitch websites: www.123stitch.com/item/Charles-Craft-Waste-Canvas-14-Ct-12x18/123-5396. I hope that helps! :)

    If I want to stich on the handkerchief, but I don't have waste canvas, what technic can I use? Can I use aida fabric?

  • @StitchinMommy

    @StitchinMommy

    6 жыл бұрын

    Waste canvas is the material I'm the most familiar with, for cross stitching on regular fabric, but I've also been told about soluble canvas, which apparently dissolves when it gets wet and you don't have to pull the threads out like I show here. If you don't have either of those, you could try tracing your design on the handkerchief with a special disappearing fabric pen and treat it like stamped cross stitch, then wash or iron out the pen after you're done stitching (depending on the type of pen you use).

    How did you bury your thread without it tangling or being pulled out with the waste canvas?

  • @StitchinMommy

    @StitchinMommy

    5 ай бұрын

    When I bury my thread, it is only between the stitches and the fabric on the back of the piece. The thread ends are not next to the waste canvas, which is on the front of the piece. So, when I remove the waste canvas threads, they're not tugging on any thread ends, because those are secured on the back. Does that make sense?

  • @StitchinMommy

    @StitchinMommy

    Yes, with this type of waste canvas, there is a starch applied to the canvas that holds the threads together. It will be very difficult to pull the strands out without the water dissolving the starch. I hope that helps!

  • @StitchinMommy

    @StitchinMommy

    If your thread is thicker than regular cotton embroidery floss, you could try using 1 strand instead of 2. You could also try some larger waste canvas if the thread is significantly thicker. The waste canvas I use is 14 count, but I have seen counts as big as 8.5 count.

    Robbin Bowser I’ve never cross stitched on a baseball cap, but I would imagine it would be a similar process using waste canvas. You might want to use a proper sewing needle with a sharp point to be able to puncture the thicker fabric.

  • @StitchinMommy

    @StitchinMommy

    Make sure your piece is all the way moistened so that the starches that hold the canvas together dissolve completely. And sometimes one direction is easier to remove than the other, so test both the horizontal threads and the vertical threads and stick with removing the easier direction first. If you have stitched over some of the waste canvas, you might need to get in there with tweezers or a needle to remove portions. I found a comment thread online with some other people's tips that you might find useful: www.reddit.com/r/CrossStitch/comments/6ly5xx/wip_help_removing_waste_cloth_but_finally/

    It’s possible the product you have is slightly different. But the kind I’ve used usually has a sort of glue/starch that keeps the waste canvas together while you’re using it. Then, the water breaks down the starch so each strand can be pulled out. It would be pretty hard to pull the strands out otherwise, and you would risk messing up your stitching.
