Tutorial: Handheld focus stacking in the Macro studio

Ғылым және технология

I realize a deep focus stack in my macro studio, in the garden, using a light box and flashes. In this tutorial I explain my setup and demonstrate my method to produce stacks handheld, from shooting multiple aligned images to assembly in Helicon focus, as well as post-treatment in Lightroom

A genius explanation.. especially flash settings, as I have all the equipment, but needed the free hand setup...😊

Hi, could you give more information about that platform with rotating platter and the flashes power bank? where can we get them? what are their model names?

Hi ! My power packs are old versions of the GODOX Propac PB960. Easily found on Amazon etc. As for the rotating platform I made it myself out of a circular piece cut from plexiglass and mounted on a cheap ball bearing ring from Amazon. Not fantastically smooth but works if rotated gently

Hello Pierre, Interesting video. Do you find some of the flashes don't recharge in time when your taking many photographs quickly like that? I have a GODEX MP12 and will try your method. Thank you - Merci!

Hi David ! Thank you. Yes indeed most flashes cannot follow a burst mode at 5-6 frames/sec, but it may be possible with high-end flashes using low power. You have to test and see how many frames you can get wih the MF-12 which recycle pretty quickly. I reviewed that system but could not keep the flashes long enough to test that You can also work in single shot mode, pausing ca 0.5 - 1 sec between frames if your subject is still. that will work with any flash

Hello Pierre, I saw in some previous videos that you use Meike MK320 flash but you change it and go with Godox TT350 on Z6. I am thinking to buy new flash and my choice wold be one of this two flashes. Which flash is better, in your opinion as expirenced user, for macro photography? Keep going on... 🤙

I just wanted to jump here and report my experience on a Z6ii … The Godox sometimes does not fire - not in burst mode, but just simple single shot on low flash power. Whereas the MK320 always fires. However, the Meiki can’t do TTL on the Z cameras, which may be a problem for you. I recently got a Nikon SB-400 - tiny! No controls on the flash, but can be controlled in-camera.

Hi Zelijko ! @snoogly beat me to it and gave you all answers: I LOVE the Meike and it's been my go-to flash for macro for years. But it will work only in Manual mode on the Z6 unfortunately. No TTL ! So I use the Godox TT350 but although it's a good little flash I don't like the "cobra" form factor (more bulky) and the recycling time is awful. Very slow in TTL. Better if you use it in M mode at 1/8 power or preferably less. The Nikon SB-400 is good, works with Z6 but no controls on the flash, so it is not easy to adjust power etc. Not sure whether Meike has worked out a firmware upadte for the Z series, Chinese companies do not really seem to respond to customer requests. But it remains a fantastic flash on DSLRs !

@@snoogly same ! Thanks for responding. The TT350 will recycle faster in M mode, and at low power can follow a burst, I ran successful tests

@@rivieramacro5240 Thank you very much Pierre and @snoogly! I orderd Meike MK320 and I hope that it will work better with my Olympus OMD camera. Michaell Widell, macro photographer who has KZread channel too, use it for few years for macro photography. He tried Godox TT350 and he claims that he had some problems on every few shots with Godox (dont fire) and with Meike he had better results and didnt have problems at all for several years. He made a two videos about it, but I need to hear another opinions from expirienced photographers and thank you once again for that. Keep gonig with good tutorials. Cheers!
