I do juggling more than 25 years, balls, clubs, flower or devil sticks, diabolo, but, from the first second i managed to do my first (contact trick i mean) butterfly, contact juggling became by far my favorite. It was nice to see someone performing and reminding me, from where i started. Have a nice day man

So... basically, the butterfly is a toss traced by constant contact with the hand, thereby giving the illusion of rolling up and down the hand?

When you first start practicing it feels like a toss, but after you get used to using just the right amount of force so that the ball stays in contact with your hand without your hand having to chase the ball, then you can begin to guide the ball with subtle hand movements. Thats my take as a beginner anyway, i cant do smooth hand to hand transfers and stuff like this dude.

This video is 8 years old but I just started now and it's very helpful! I bought a Sil-X ball, a chrome ball and an acrylic ball to see which one is easiest for me. The chrome and acrylic feel easier to control but OUCH! Doing it over and over again is quite painful on my knuckles, especially the chrome. I guess it might be best to start with Sil-X after all. If I can learn how to control that and keep it from rolling off my hands every time I catch it on the backhand, I'm sure transitioning to heavier ones will be easier. Hopefully I'll learn the smooth movements so there's not much bouncing and hitting of my bones.

A distinction if I may? Just moving from back to front is commonly called the windshield wiper or some such. The true butterfly involves the elbow so that the ball follows a figure eight on it's side like the infinity symbol.

Great Video Niels, but perhaps the butterfly is not quite the "easy move" to get started. I have been trying for many years and still can not do it. I have watched many tutorials, but just cant get this move at all. Perhaps you might do a "really basic" tutorial about this butterfly move and exactly how to do it.?. Thanks Dave.

You would be best off starting with a contact practice ball, not acrylic (crystal look) balls as you will beat them up learing and they are fairly expensive. 100mm is good for one ball, but smaller for multiball stuff (70mm works for me). Smaller is harder...Light balls are flighty.

When it comes to the butterfly, There isn't a single person I've seen explain it properly so it's impossible to follow what anyone is saying about it. What's being explained, the laws of physics simply won't allow. I also want to further elaborate that the Windshield wiper will not get you prepared for the butterfly. There is nothing in the windshield wiper that is used to accomplish the butterfly. The butterfly automatically breaks the windshield wiper movement so it cannot even be used to reference. It's also 100% impossible to both hold the ball while bending your wrist/moving your elbow in a figure 8 while the ball is on the back of your hand.

@@NielsDuinker Yeah I'm working on it. Is there by chance you have discord we could chat in? It's not just you, it's everyone. I'm usually very good at pin pointing where things can be improved. I have an update video to my Contact Juggling. Lets chat.
