Tutorial - Altered Book Journal Preparation

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

As requested, a tutorial on how to prepare a dollar store book to make an altered book junk journal. I also show how I make banners out of the torn out book pages. Credit goes to CraftyIrina and Patricia Viramontes...that's where I learned! Thanks to them and to you for watching!

First time on your channel and love it.Started crafting 6 months ago when I stumbled on an other junk journaling channel who made books from scratch found this very difficult as it involved sewing to bind the spine and as I have arthritis physically challenging . I have done other projects christmas decoration for instance. Very excited by the altered book as I know this is a way forward for me .Will be tuning in to more of your tutorials . Thank you so much. Happy Christmas from Ann in Derry Ireland.💚🎄💚👏👏👏

I too am a total beginner and I found this tutorial absolutely brilliant! I actually paused it, found a hardback unwanted book in my pile to go to our charity shop and joined in with you! Thank you so much! I had already started my first ever journal which was a new blank A5 book with a soft tree of life leather cover my daughter bought me a few years ago and I have started that one with a Wicca theme. I have not found it easy as the pages are all intact and I don't really want to tear those out but am learning from KZread how to embellish them. This tutorial of yours is fantastic for old books that can be altered and I am very excited that I now have a book ready to embellish with a different theme. Amazing! I am going to look through all of your previous videos now!

Gayle, this was the easiest one I've seen yet! So doable! Thank you! I have one question - I've learned in other videos that the pages need to be SEWN into the spine in order for me to do an altered book. Otherwise, if they are glued, the adjoining pages elsewhere in the book are going to become loose and fall out. You didn't mention anything about this, so I'm wondering, no I'm confused. What is your advice, please? Thank you so very very much for being such a lovely person and so easy to follow! I learn so much from you!

Very helpful. I just watched CraftyIrina’s video, and she said on a book with around 325 pages, she tears out 8. Depending on how heavily you embellish, that might be a good guide to use for a book if you are like me and are just starting out. You could do more or less depending on the size of your particular book and crafting style.

Thanks Gayle, I had tried one about a year or so ago and as far as I got was tearing out pages and gluing !! haha. Didn't never get around to decorating it and really didn't know what to put inside. I really like the digital kits!! Did you print them out on regular copy paper or what # did you use. I done mine by Craftyirina and I put glue down the spine area too,,,hmmm not sure if I should have. I see you only done 2 sides according to if you wanted the top or side pockets... I only done my for side pockets, another mistake, so I am really glad you did this tutorial showing you can have top and side pockets plus the deep pocket with the piece folded in,,, I loved that one also !!!! Gonna try the banners also,, too cute !!! Thanks again for sharing !!! You always aim to please us !!!!

Thank you for this tutorial, Gayle. You are the best. I have a question, does tearing out a page not compromise its other half in the signature? Would it come adrift later on? Would love to try this technique but my brain always comes with stumbling blocks, sigh. Lol.

Poppy Doodles I don't think so. Even though the pages are torn, they are still in the spine. They are just shorter, if that makes sense. Since the two pages are glued "around" the torn pages, there will be no stress on those torn pages. They are protected by the surrounding pages. But as said to folks with other concerns, journals aren't made to be thrown about and like any book need to be handled with care or they will show the wear. Think of vintage books...two books from 1923, one may be in pristine condition, where the other may be falling apart. It's how they were treated in life. (Hmm, much like people, I think. 😄). ❤️

Thanks for explaining. I have one question, on the spine of the book were the pages glued to the spine individual or were they glued as signatures? I was watching somebody and they said to make sure the pages were glued to the spine individually otherwise they are hard to remove. She did not say impossible to remove. My dollar store book is glued to the spine as signatures so I was afraid it might not work.

It’s best if the spine is strongly glued in. You are going to tear out pages leaving a bit in the spine. I did a tutorial on preparing the dollar store book. I think it might help. ❤️

I have made altered books but never in a planned way, just kind of as I go but I like this idea of prepping it first with the pockets and then decorating it in a theme. I will be trying this. I love the banner idea, of them all stuck together to create how chunky or how wide you want. I don't know Patricia but I am going to have to look her up. Thanks for sharing. May I ask something about your completed journal? I’ve noticed you had beautiful floral pictures on some of the pages, are they glued on to the page and Can I also ask if they are where you got them? Are they printable? I’m sorry about all the questions I just love your work and I hope someday to be able not to be so scared to start and use all the things I’ve collected to make my own. I fear I will ruin everything I’ve gathered for the project.

I like the idea of taking advantage of the existing pages. I haven’t attempted any junk journals or faux dori or frame pages;;;; I love the way they look but I’m still not quite sure if its purpose. Question - can you insert what I think they call signature pages in a book like this.? Or you basically use the existing pages for that also

Kara, this type of altered book wouldn't have signatures. The spine is still full of the existing book pages, if that makes sense. Thanks for watching! ❤️
