turntable buzzing? simple guide to what may be going on. Using Rega Planar as example

Our attempt at showing how to diagnose some issues that can cause buzzing noises from your Hifi when using a Record Player. I will probably need to try this again as (obviously) some of my examples didn't go to plan. Using Rega system as an example... though valid for all Record Player systems.

Best tip ever! I was searching the internet about how to solve my hum. Nothing worked. I noticed that it somehow had to do with my amp. I noticed that when I put my turntable further away, the hum got less. But the configuration of my tv cabinet I couldn’t move it further away to solve it completely. Then the genius tip, switch amp and turntable. My transformer was on the left side too. The side I had my turntable sitting. Switched, no hum! Gone! Thanks a lot for the great tip. Cheers to you!

Thanks for the very interesting video 👍. As the owner of a couple of older Rega planer 3 Turntables, that are both much modified, the only time I've noticed humming is when I had an R200 tonearm fitted. This deck is now fitted with: a modified Rb251 tonearm, SRM Tech Silent Base and the matching TT psu, 24v motor and pcb from a Rega P7, among its many modifications. My other Planner 3 has a modified Rb300 tonearm, later Premotec 110v motor and Isokinetik Isodrive branded Heed Audio PSU and PCB, among a few other modifications and has always been hum free. Both these turntable and tonearms have had various motors and psu combinations too, only because I like to experiment 🤯 and have been hum free.

Hi sir very informative as usual , I have the rega p3 and rega phono stage plus the rega speed controller . And indeed I notice the sonic hum as the arm progresses across the plater . If I was to be critical of rega I would say the fixed length of the phono cables from the deck would benefit from being longer . Now weather this would eliminate this problem I’m not sure , But I’m of the opinion it would do no harm . As a retired electrical contractor I know full well the high frequency problems that can affect all sorts of sensitive equipment . So with this in mind just let us think for a moment and consider how a phono stage works , it’s job is to amplify a very small signal . So by virtue of its task in hand it will do exactly that to every thing within its potential wavelength . But fortunately our saving grace is that when we listen to the music , most of this negative background noise is lost to us . Yes there are those who are able to detect such frequency’s , and find their listing experience diminished because of it . And I can fully appreciate there dilemma , but as our good friend has proven most issues can be overcome . Best wishes and kind regards to all especially our genial host 😀👍👍👍

A very good video. Another cause of hum with older decks can be mechanical vibration from the motor finding it’s way into the replay chain. Hence the hum is only present when the stylus is in contact with a spinning record. Quite a few 70s belt drive decks used rubber mounts to decouple the motors. The rubber goes hard with age and no longer isolated the motor adequately. Often the rubber parts can be restored using liquid soap and hot water. Pioneer PL12D is an example of this, but many others from that time are very similar in design.

Very useful video. My problem was that I had quite a noticeable hum from both speakers, Rega Brio, Dali Specktor 2s, Schitte phono stage. Nothing seemed to work so I unplugged the other components one by one. I have a Yamaha Music cast dac/streamer, and it was this - though not the device itself. It's powered by a small usb plug in, like the ones you use to charge phones etc, and this was the culprit. I swapped it for another one and all was fine. There is still a low buzz when I put my ear right up to the speaker but I'm putting this down to the Brio.

I got the rega planar 3 18 months ago it has hum it used to have a continous popping noise too. I have the marantz pm 6007 that has a ground on the case too. It was suggested to attatch a thin wire from the left outer ring of the phono lead of the turntable to the earth on the marantz. It was very cluttered behind my system with x2 tacimo filtered 6 way extention leads because the TV & set top box, wifi router & playstation was near by so I managed to de clutter that by re routing some stuff to a seperate socket & it's cut the noise about 50%. Apart from that I was stumped I only had the planar 3 deck on at about up to 33% volume before the hum annoyed me. The popping i think was due to the routers old proximity but OK now. So happy I treat myself to some new speakers, b&w 607 s2 anniversary. Now I am happy with the whole sound & system.

That is a very valuable video say the five times fast. Personally I have the newer planar 3 with an elys 2 that definitely picks up more noise as the arm gets to the middle towards the motor as you point out. I agree I don't think it's a grounding issue. Perhaps I am getting proximity issue problems still but having bought a Bryston BP2MM with PS3 power supply didn't help at all if anything probably noisier than the little Rega Mini phono stage. Does sound better I must say. Perhaps adding a NEO power supply would improve the noise problem and apparently would improve the sound. Adding a new Rega reference belt might improve further as to sound quality. I should try turning things off like my wifi etc. to see if that takes out the hum but when a lot of it seems like it's the Rega motor that frankly I consider a dog in terms of noise from the get go. I would have to imagine Rega cut corners somewhere if nothing else they took out 2/3 of the weight in an apparent attempt to improve sound quality which seems a bit silly to me but they like the light stiff design and have gone a bit bonkers in that regard and one would think that if you want to isolate things like motor noise you build it a whole lot differently than wide open and less material. Anyway getting much more proximity is tough when Rega doesn't even let you put a nice interconnect and instead force you to use their interconnect and live with that and their chosen length. It's probably good I do like the Rega TT having an original planar 3 that is a freaking tank and if this newer one motor doesn't die long before 30 years I would be amazed.

@@alanbratt3022 well most really like the Exact and many seem to not like the Elys2 so much, hum aside. What phono stage are you using? The Rega Mini has a separate ground and surely is quieter than this Bryston BP2 so I would imagine a Rega Fono MM model would provide quiet operation and great sound. My volume when not set too high is fine as to hum with my system, until maybe end of record. The Elys 2 (and Exact) are high output as is the Bryston so that creates a bit of a mismatch. I may get the NEO PS to see what that does, supposed to be a sound improvement whether it lowers the hum.

I remember an old Hi-Fi Answers article circa 1978 titled "Down to earth trickery.....humm" by Paul Benson regarding hum loops in a system. My Linn Sondek had a separate earth wire in the mains plug but the attached Ittok had an earth lead also. If the Ittok's earth wire was connected to an amplifier which had been grounded via its mains plug the two separate paths to earth could cause a ground loop audible as hum. I suppose this problem isn't encountered so much these days and that's why you didn't include it. Great video though.

Hello Cheshireaudio, I've been terribly vexed over an ongoing buzzing from my turntable (it's a Fluance RT-85 with a Sumiko Moonstone Cartridge connected to a Pro-Ject Tube Box S2 phono preamp) Since I have a second turntable & phono preamp I switched everything out. Buzzing was still present. I moved the turntable away from the AV receiver and that didn't work. I even switches cartridges and checked the connections. Nothing worked. Then it occurred to me to look at my AudioQuest cables and one of them was the culprit. When I moved it around the buzzing increased and decreased so I replaced it with a spare set of RCA cables and the buzzing was gone in a snap. It never dawned on me that a set of newer AudioQuest Cables could be defective. Luckily for me they're entry-level cables at roughly $40.00 so I didn't pay a fortune for them but even at that price range, one would expect a better experience. Anyways, your video got me to thinking outside of the box and within an hour I solved my buzzing problem. Thank You! Cheers!

As the tonearm finishes a side, when I lift the tonearm, the static is crackling and a hum is present, and when the tonearm is back in place, the loud buzz will snap to a silence, like a vent closing on the side of your house. Without an album on the platter, I can move the tonearm towards the middle of the turntable and the buzzing hum increases a lot. It is very hard to diagnose!

A few years ago i used to have a neighbour who was a keen CB enthusiast and all his broadcasts would come through my Hi-Fi system, very annoying at the time.

I am a radio ham and my neighbour could hear me through a game chair. The problem was at his end not my equipment as I checked all my other neighbours and also everything in my house. I bought some clip on ferrite rings to solve his problem from Maplins but he refused to let me clip them on. He would rather just complain and cause trouble. A very nasty man, I am glad his wife kicked him out.

I’ve fitted the new Audio Technica Vm95 en to a few now and it matches it really well... also the Goldring E3 ... actually got stock of both these too after a long wait

More than Earth it needs to be balanced even RCA can be you need to shield it all the way up to the cartridge body is the best approach and we'll cut out the noise. They are using the wrong type of cable you need triple should cable ideally 50 ohms and you got to shield interconnect wires to the cartridge with some copper tape you need to connect each channel together wires make sure they're touching closes possible with some cotton tie them together keep each channel separated as much as possible with a bit of sponge insulate the connectors to cartridge and from the head shell and wrap the head shell with copper tape make sure it's Earth out to the cartridge body and the arm is shielded as well a lot of arms are not properly shielded running one Earth wire is not a shield. You have to look at EMI interference as water, if you treat it as water then you will block EMI EMI will try and find any root possible to get in that's the nature of EMI interference. And don't shield your power cable to the wall this is wrong a manufacturers keep doing it, it needs to be Earth to the equipment not the wall socket. sealed your motor as well put a shield around your motor as well use some insulation tape then copper tape and make sure the copper tape is grounded

Thanks so much. Mine was indeed proximity effect. I'm ashamed to admit I had the turntable on top of a CD player with the cable running along the side of it. I temporarily put a 3-inch block of Styrofoam between them and ran the cable differently and hum is nearly gone. I'm convinced it will be completely gone once I put everything in a proper rack. Thanks again, subscribed
