Turns abandoned cargo boat into modern home gem (before/after)
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Jérémie Malvy bought an old cargo riverboat for 11,000 euros and then spent two years remaking it into a light and plant-filled modern home. For Malvy, the home - now docked on the Seine on the outskirts of Paris - is another step on his journey from his home in Pakistan to France. It began a couple decades ago when Malvy arrived in Paris with no resources and no words of French, so he lived on the street - often under bridges of the Seine - and spoke to the river.
After finding success with a chain of organic grocery cooperatives and restaurants, he decided to build his dream home from a retired cargo boat that once carried grains. Not wanting to lose his strong connection to the river, he remade the boat with an all-glass front and only plants between his living room and the water. The downstairs is half-buried in water, which provides excellent acoustics and insulation; it also provides an eye-level view of the water (and the ability to open a window and touch the river).
Today, Malvy lives aboard full-time with his wife Sara and the entire home is filled with plants. Malvy says this constant connection with water and nature means that once he steps aboard all his stress floats away within minutes. Renamed Panjab (Punjab) for Malvy’s home region in Pakistan, the boat no longer has an engine, but if the couple ever wanted to move it they could simply get a tug.

Beautiful story of Jeremie Malvy's journey of having very little when he arrived in France- no money, on French language skills, no family. BUT Jeremie obviously had what is most important in life- determination, intelligence and people skills. I am always happy when people like Jeremie succeed because he is not only a wonderful role model for others who come from very little means, but I am also happy for him because all his hard work has now rewarded him with a life he desired and designed. They usually need to have minimal 5 mm thickness to be insured, Every 5-10 years these boats need to be taken out of the water and where thickness is less, steel plates are going to be welded on top of the thin areas. Smaller section can be welded without issues, on larger sections it can be beneficial to apply rivets to allow the construction to expand and contract without warping or cracking.

He touched my heart. Such a kind soul. I went through some of what he went through almost. He had it so much worse, and look at him now. I was homeless in WA state, sleeping in a van, pregnant in 18 degree weather. I went to the beach a lot. Because I grew up by the water, and I prayed to the water, and I also cried. God sent me so many signs that I was going to be ok. Today I fixed my credit, I saved money, and I worked very hard. Even though I have Stage IV Breast/Cancer, I fell blessed. Working 40 hours in pain, towards that dream that goal, I feel blessed. This November I will start buying my home. I cannot wait. I also speak to my plants now, like they are my family. I've seen my share of maritime retrofits before, but everything in the Malvys' project is top shelf. It looks like a combination hotel and arboretum onboard, with ingenious design features. Pity that, in the United States, you could never get something like this ever done due to zealot zoning restrictions and code issues. The fact that they could do this in Paris - not known as a slouch in the overregulation department itself - is somewhat of a miracle in its own right. The Malvys are a great couple, down-to-Earth, modest, and appreciative of where they are and where they have come from. Major kudos to them, and to Kirsten and the crew for finding them...

I might be misunderstanding you, but the US has several places just like this. Look up Sausalito and Seattle houseboats. This barge IS definitely the best one I've seen.
@bartphlegar8212
Жыл бұрын
@@chippychin Interesting that you bring up Sausalito and Seattle. The rule in American economics is that if you have enough money you can put anything anywhere. Back in the late 90s I lived on a sailboat in San Diego. The marina restrictions were onerous then, and now with the ionospheric housing market, they are downright mercenary. By decree of the Port of SD (why they have jurisdiction baffles me) a marina can only have up to 10% of its slips as liveaboards, for which of course the slip fee doubles. No problem there. However, to legally become liveaboard you have to traverse a veritable gauntlet - the main fist of that gauntlet being the "waiting list". Most people die before their name gets to the top. Meanwhile, similiar to apartments in rent control cities like New York and San Francisco, these liveaboard slips get subleased out into perpetuity by the lucky holders of that slip, in complete violation of the rules. As far as Marin and Seattle go, I think I've seen the vessels that you're referring to, and I would contend that those were grandfathered in from the 40s, 50s, and 60s, when America was still more or less a free country (unless you were a minority) and you could pretty much do anything you wanted as long as you didn't hurt anybody. But try to escape the deathgrip of tract home builders and their zoning laws, and you will encounter legions of lawyers who will devour your investment in legal fees and damages. Once upon a time you could, but now?...

@@timestax did you not hear the parts about how people who used to live in the boats were people who were unable to afford to live otherwise 🤔 that gentrification has obviously taken another place that was previously designed by those who had to find alternative was to live mildly comfortable lives. A few people with money decided that it was cool and they wanted it and they took it from others it's not a new concept it's habitual all across particularly western countries but really everywhere. In this particular case it went even a step farther and they didn't have to apply and wait 25 years nor did they have to pay another person who has their spot to buy it they were given it for free from the city and that means that someone who didn't have the money to buy a spot who has been on the waiting list for 15-20+years and would have gotten that spot didn't. Your implication that it doesn't matter that the system is corrupt because it only is currently having a effect on people who have money is just ridiculous 🙄 this is how the spots have become available on to those who have wealth in the first place and we see that Clearly in their complete openness about the fact that it wasn't so long ago that the spots belonged to the poor, artists, those who couldn't live in the mainstream mostly because of cost and that it is cost prohibitive now because of people who have wealth taking over and that they didn't even have to follow the path that those with moderate wealth have to follow... am I slightly less upset about it because at least he is a person who has experienced poverty and suffering and if anyone should have a taste of corruption at least it was him ya but in truth it's not much better because it was him and it should not be happening at all!

People in West can't fathom a life that's been made from poor to rich but when you come from nothing and life gives you freedom to progress, people do miracles. Especially those that don't take the privileges for granted like those living in West. Being poor in some countries is nowhere the poor feel in some Western societies. It's unimaginable in countries like Pakistan to take loans and equity. It's a totally different ball game here where you can get approavals in finance that people who want to do something can do wonders. Hardly anyone has e.g bank loans for home financing. 90% of homes are wholly owned by people with 0 mortgages. Same is wIth businesses.

He mentioned how much he paid for the boat originally which was a great deal but I would love to know how much it cost to do the renovation. Beautiful especially with all the plants everywhere.

Started with the boat at 11,000 Euro so that’s a good price. I’m sure it’s close to $100,000
This boat looks better than some multi million dollar yachts I've seen in the past. Looks Fabulous ⚓
I’m so moved. This is my idea of a dream home/life. The fact that stress release is the impetus behind so many design choices. So intentional. So much appreciation for nature’s healing powers met with the comfort of luxurious touches and inspiring design. Above all- a beautiful story fueled with gratitude ❤️

I've just had to move home because I lost my job, but I'm still lucky enough to own the property, I've been very depressed because its nowhere near as nice as the place I had to leave behind, but these lovely young people have given me hope that I can work some small magic, and make my new place as beautiful as my old place. thank you.

What's amazing to me is how he was able to transform his life from homelessness to living on this boat on the river Seine. Well done Malvy.
I was wondering about the name Punjab, being a Punjabi myself. Such a wonderful thought to name it Punjab and how he completely understands what it means and how much these rivers mean to us. Such an Intelligent human being.
Congratulations to this beautiful and amazing couple! Your home is a dream! Way better than any billionaire’s mansion It has all the essentials with comfort and some cool luxuries. The plants are the home’s lungs and the water it’s beating heart. Very happy for you! Great job!

What a GORGEOUS home. I also have to say, the husband is such a BEAUTIFUL SOUL. What a lovely human who appreciates nature, earth, life, and what he has. It's fascinating how life revolves & relies SO MUCH upon water, and this man at his lowest lived, spoke, & cried to the water. The water washed away all his hurts and lows, and brought him renewed life, love, home, heart. Such a amazing spiritual existence to one whom truly is appreciative. They warm my heart. ❤️

Phenomenal home. I chuckled when the woman said “Is the restaurant better than my house? Well, no” I have to agree with her.
For anyone wondering how he was able to afford to fix this thing up... In the description it says he bought it for really cheap 11,000 euros or 11,600 US dollars... Then it says he found success ($$$) working with organic grocery cooperatives and restaurants. Then he started working on this dream. So he had to work hard and find success. The wife said, "After many years... " So it takes hard work, dedication, and time.... Nothing is just, "Poof!" And magically there. For those saying they are jealous, that's silly...obviously they had to work extremely hard to see this come to fruition. So instead of envying others, just find something you truly want to dedicate time to and don't give up. It's very easy to save up a lump sum of money if you work hard and save. They probably never ate out, never spent money on stupid silly things, no hardcore drugs, and overall nothing in excess. Now they live nice and have a beautiful home. I was homeless for almost a year when I was younger and I had to move 6 times in one year as a single mom. That was almost 10 years ago. My husband was also poor and living with a group of guys. He saved almost $20,000 over many years. I saved money when I moved in with my mom. Working and putting myself through school. When we met my husband had to build his credit from 0. After 2 years together, we were able to put a good down payment on a home. So it's all about how you save, what you choose to spend your money on, how you use your time. Nothing happens overnight and watching people on social media can be deceiving as well. I think one of the best things you can do sometimes is just delete social media and do your own thing, don't compare yourself to the world or you'll get discouraged. Also learn to follow through and don't be afraid of failing or possibly falling into a really bad rut. Pick yourself up and keep going no matter what. 👍🙏

So happy for this adorable couple. I can see why they have to force themselves to leave the boat. The interior decorator & architect did a fabulous job on this project. Thank you to the owners of the houseboat for allowing us to see their beautiful beautiful home! I saw a lot of great ideas, quality craftsmanship and love in this home!!!
Kirsten's question "Why so many plants?" It seems totally natural to me. And I don't think the amount he has fights with the design at all. It softens the scene for sure, and as I say-seems like a totally natural thing. And then there's the opportunities it presents, in tending, in gardening...all of which brings you out closer to the water on a daily basis.

They said he opened a restaurant, so I suppose he may have come up through the ranks in the restaurant business. And I'm also guessing that he's rich money-wise as well. He may have bought the boat cheaply, but I'm sure it wasn't cheap to refurbish so lavishly, and I'm guessing that it's not cheap to maintain the space and the utilities required to make it work.

came as an immigrant, couldn't speak French, no education, lived homeless... to becoming fluent in French, entrepreneur business owner, and building a luxury house on the water. WOW!!!
This house is absolutely beautiful! And yes, it is touching hearing Malvy did not speak French so he spoke to the water, and the WATER heard his dreams and helped make them happen! I do however, wonder if they have to pay yearly property taxes? Also, I am curious what their expenses are to maintain a house boat compared to a mainland home? This home is very soothing and refreshing, and designed in a unique and functional manner!!!
Jérémie is totally amazing in my book. This is a real story of the success of a person who didn't have an education nor money and eventually had the ability to build his own home. Admire, salute and respect.
This is a beautiful home and after hearing the guy's story he deserves it. For someone who was homeless and couldn't speak the language, he now has a beautiful home, a beautiful wife and a beautiful life XX
That is an amazing home! I don't know if I could ever get used to having no blinds on the windows. Having all of Paris able to watch me in my own house would freak me out a bit, but that is a beautiful boat, absolutely stunning!!!
Absolutely amazing and beautifully made! I'm sure this was a VERY expensive build, but the design, location and the reason for it's construction makes it so much more unique than a multi-bedroom huge house. But to be an cozy quiet place, surrounded by water and nature, feel like you're in a small home and a cruise ship, in the middle of Paris....priceless! I'm actually very curious to see what some of the other houseboats look like inside, to see the contrast.
I had a moment watching this... when you walked into the bedroom behind the kitchen... I felt the cool, experienced the quiet, the coolness in my nostrils. What a beautiful, charming, fantastic house and story. I would love to stay in that apartment for a few days, and maybe cook my jamaican brown stew fish with rice and peas and plantains for that wonderful couple. And then drink wine in the jacuzzi!
Watching this was like a breath of fresh air &absolutely no ego whatsoever. A masterpiece the built there. Love it.
Wow I wasn't expecting this story, the struggle is real, imagine you take a huge leap of faith to change the trajectory of your life, you land in a country alone, albeit a beautiful one, but you have no money, no food, no education & you cant even speak the language; lets put that into perspective...you don't even have money to call home...so you fill the Seine with your tears, but now your life floats safely on them. Seriously love this guy!
Kirsten, you never disappoint! The gentleman was such a kind soul and his wife so kind and giving. But, how did he transform from living under a bridge to owning a palace on the Seine?
