turning the Dexters out on spring pasture

We decided to turn the Dexters out on spring pasture! The grass isn't as tall as we'd like it to be because of a late spring, but calving season has started and we want them to be born on clean grass. In this video you'll see how we move them from their winter yard to pasture, how and why we separate our bulls from the rest of the herd, how we manage spring pasture grazing, and meet our second calf of the season.

A video describing how your previous career prepared you for being a small farmer would be interesting. I.E. speaking to large groups, representing your company, time management, records keeping, etc.

You have been extremely helpful. We have just purchased our first three girls who will be calving the end of summer. They are registered Dexters and very well mannered. Thanks so much for the information.

How do you know when it’s too wet, soft and muddy for the cows to go out? I worry about them wrecking the pasture in those conditions!

What would be a good price for three Dexter cows one bowl two heifers registered I thought I heard in one of your other videos you were saying a small calf would be around 300 registered

Which one ended up being the dominate cow?

  • @JustaFewAcresFarm

Good question! It's hard to tell once they're done head butting because they don't have very many opportunities to show which one is dominant. Especially on pasture, where everyone has their own patch of grass. But one of them had a calf later in the day!

How many head per acre of grazing can you get away with generally when running a dexter operation?

  • @JustaFewAcresFarm

In our climate, we figure 1 head/acre. This includes enough land to make hay for winter feeding. If we were buying in hay, it would be 1/2 acre/head summer grazing only.
