Turning Some Funky Off Center Mushrooms - Woodturning Project | Davidson Crafts

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Here is my take on wood turned mushrooms. The stems are made out of poplar and were turned off center to give them a funky/curvy look. The caps are some unknown wood from the scrap bin and the base is made from some walnut bark. I love the way these turned out and really enjoyed the process of making them. I am a self-taught woodworker/crafter who still has much to learn so please don't view this content as instructive. Let me know what you think in the comments and your suggestions on what I should craft next. Enjoy!

Nice work. I liked the base as it gave the feel of being in the woods to the project. Thanks.

Excellent... New turner here and two things that stuck out to me that I learned... 1 charring the base for a little warp and 2, off center turning. Never tried that. Looks like a fun project and I will definitely give this a go! Also glad to see others that use carbide tools in conjunction with traditional tools. For whatever reason, I had it in my head that I needed to start with traditional tools and then became frustrated and moved to carbide. I now use them both on projects, but I thought I may have been in the minority. Subbed...!

Excellent video and a huge learning session for me. I've spent hundreds of hours on my lathe and could never step off into offset turning. I will now. You made it seem easy. Sharp tools are key. Thank you very much.

Just starting out and I'm impressed with your techniques. I wished I would have purchased the carbide tools as opposed to the traditional ones, but I just can't seem to bring myself to spend $300...yet! Is there another more reasonable brand of carbides that is also good quality?

Thanks for watching. Carbide tools are great and I love using them but you're right they are pricey. There are many brands out there but I'm only familiar with Easy Wood Tools. I've found that woodturning forums are good place to get some info without people trying to sell you something. Good luck.

I got three chisels, one round, one square and one diamond shaped for detailing in a nice storage box from Grizzly for about 100 bucks….. they are my “go to” chisels for most projects….They are so easy to use it almost feels like cheating!! Lol

You make 4 off center marks on the end, do you use all of them or just one or two?
