Turning My Phone Into A Laptop...
Ғылым және технология
The NexDock XL is not a laptop. It’s a lapdock which is basically a laptop shell with none of the traditional computer stuff on the inside - instead it relies on whatever you connect it to for brain-power. It’s compatible with any phone that offers a desktop mode - Samsung DeX being the most “‘popular’. This is my honest experience and review, covering everything you might want to know before taking the plunge on this promising concept.

I really don't understand what Nextdock was thinking with this because it still has a lot of the same issues as the previous version, like you mentioned, so it feels more like a prototype than a polished final product. I think its biggest problem is the price, though, as $300 is rather extortionate when you can get a decent Chromebook for that price.

I bought a similar product from UPERFECT which was using a similar SKU. No one in KZread reviews mentioned how reflective the screen was, which made it almost unusable in lecture halls. The battery life was also abysmal, lasting less than two hours. Lengthy email conversations with support claimed that they couldn't replace the battery. They also refused to send me a battery replacement or tell me how to replace it myself. They said some nonsense about it having to take 15-30 days to repair it, and then they proceeded to ask me how much the fee for the battery change would be (how would I know??) for verification. Afterwards, they want me to send the device over at my own costs. I asked for the instructions on how to send it back, and they continued with the nonsense about long repair times. Instead, they offered a 50% voucher for my next monitor, which does not make sense since I have to spend hundreds of dollars again for a monitor which will end with battery issues and a terrible display. Their argument was that I will be responsible for the return costs because I have used it for a long time (time check, 5 months of useless emails). I eventually received a partial refund through PayPal. Do not recommend. - Customer support is terrible. - Support does not want to provide proper instructions to return the device. - Support provides excuses about returning the device for repairs, stating long repair times. - Support wants customers to pay for return costs. - Support wants customers to buy another defective and discounted product. - Warranty is fake and clearly for show.

yaaaaaay!! Been waiting for a review of this product from you (and a handful of other KZread NexDock users) 😁
I'm glad they're still making new models !
Thanks Thao! Love you doing these reviews.
They should give it a little extra thickness & make it where your phone or tablet can be stowed inside it. Either behind the screen or under the keyboard. That way can have a better keyboard & track pad layout.
Excellent review. I see this as a niche product for people who can get away with doing their dayjob/work on Samsung DeX or people who use a cloud PC a lot. Otherwise, as much as I'd like to use my phone as my main laptop PC as well, it just isn't there yet with the current state of apps and Samsung DeX. Giving us the ability to run desktop OSes like Windows in a virtual machine in DeX would be amazing.
@SMSUnleashed100

Agreed. I think there's only so much DeX and Android apps can do, so I also feel it's kind of a wasted opportunity to not be able to run actual desktop OSes in it, even if through virtual machines.

Love the introduction Thao 🥰😎❤️💖🤩
Your yearly samsung dex video
You can easily connect your Ally or gaming handheld to a Thunderbolt 4 dock to supply 65w of power, and then connect the handheld to this lapdock. It can hence serve as a laptop for both your smartphone and handheld use cases.
How can someone not think about the lefties 💀
I love your reviews, Thao. The thing missing in Android is ChromeOS when the phone is connected to a screen and keyboard. I think it is coming, they are already working on both operating systems having the same Linux Kernal and besides that, ChromeOS is functional inside some Android devices.

I remember 9to5Google did a video on it (Pixel 8/Pro, latest Android beta) some days ago but it doesn't really have taskbars and we have to install an overlay app for that. But that's a progress.
I like the concept of these devices. I use a duet 5 and a fold 4 for work. If prices and battery and screen tech lines up in the future I would consider.
Did widows phone do this back in the day, and now this would be an awesome thing to have if it did everything a laptop could do with file management.
at first when the vid started i was excited about it, but as vid played more i was like, ohhhhh ummm not as excited! The product is getting there, but maybe the next model will be better!

Aaargh, few of the build decicions are deal killers for me. Not the trackpad tho, I love that placement from my asus zenbook pro duo. - powerbutton in the side (turned off accidentally way too many laptops with that design) - speakers blocked and being not so good - not enough space for my phone with big case on the charging pad - sub-par touch pad & the lip
I'm always a huge sucker for lapdocks, but I'm not entirely sure about this one because of the touchpad. I know any pre-2024 ASUS Zenbook Duo owners can relate to the experience of using it, but it still feels awkward to have the touchpad on the right side when we are so used to the bottom side. Also, we tend to use an external mouse on the right side.
I'm a lefty but I was forced to use a mouse with my right hand (older siblings...) and I can't use a mouse with my left hand 😁
The idea is great but still need improvements specifically the track pad, webcam situation and battery life to make it a good investment and better than the alternative like a mobile monitor and slim keyboard that often are cheaper
It's awesome, I just finished RDS for a mobile development. However, a phone screen is a bit small, so this is the perfect solution to develop Rust apps on my phone.
There’s a lot of potential for this type of product. There’s just build quality things that could be improved along with better screen and trackpad. I understand that’s tough with the price point tho
It would be cheaper to get a portable monitor, Bluetooth keyboard, and mouse. 🤔
Motorola tried this with their Atrix phone in 2011.
Damn good
This is a dope!
Interesting review, as always! For me Dex replaced my laptop years ago. At the moment i'm a big fan of the Ricoh 150BW portable monitor (combined with Thinkpad TrackpoinII keyboard). Because of great adjustability and cable management (which i think looks awkward on the Nexdock). Maybe you can do a review on it :)

And how do you use Dex what apps are supported and work with Dex
@RogierWigbels
15 күн бұрын
@@lesleyhaan116 Lots of apps scale fine on Dex, even on a large monitor (3440x1440 usb-c). Hard drives and other periferals can be connected via the usb hub on the monitor. Work related windows software i access in the cloud (Citrix Worspace app or similar).
I'm thinking bout getting the NexDock XL. I want to know if there's any issue when watching any streaming services on that device with Samsung's Dex. I remember that I tried watching Peacock videos on my regular laptop while DEX is connected in it's desktop mode. And I couldn't watch any of the peacock content. Yet when watching youtube videos, it's totally fine. This is going to be a deal break for me if I can't watch peacock, or other streaming services with the NexDock XL.
Thanks for review. The idea behind is good. If you are mobile only influencer but want occasionally bigger screen with laptop-like ergononics. That trackpad seems unusable. For that is deal breaker. Why buy 300 dollar device to use your current mobile as trackpad like you would normally do? Isnt it cheaper not to buy?
Looks like a work in progress, and indeed very niche. Years ago our company outsourced IT but kept our network group, and while I waited for a new laptop, I used a desktop screen and my Bluetooth keyboard and mouse with an HTC phone as my computer. I have to say the results were better than this. Thanks for an informative and honest video!
I've had my eye on this and I can tell you, the first thing I would do is turn off the wireless charging!! I do not understand this feature for this device. You are going to lose power on the dock way before your phone dies with this feature on 🤦♂️
So many issues for a product that has seen a lot of upgrades... how do you create a product that's supposed to replace your laptop and then not have a webcam or have speakers right on top of the place where the phone is supposed to be placed?
Hello everyone , what's the battery llife on those nexdock...(in the video i hear 5 hours?...that's unimpressive or rather bad) i dont understand why previous similar products have so little battery when they advertize real laptops with more than double or triple that battery life...
I think the palm rejection problems are due to Samsung/android, I have a Samsung Tab S6 with the attachable keyboard/trackpad and if I graze the trackpad while typing it will move my cursor. It can get very frustrating, there have been times the bad palm rejection has led to entire sentences getting highlighted and typed over.
STILL WAITING YOUR COMPARISON BETWEEN IPAD PRO M4 WITH TAB S9 PLUS
A lot of people are missing the point of this and why this is a bargain. When you have this, you can basically keep it as you upgrade your phone. With snapdragon-powered laptops nowadays, its just a matter of time until a flagship phone can run full windows. I am already using DEX 90% of the time.
I feel they should remove the track pad and place phone charger there. And use that as your mouse. It would feel more natural.

What about PC handheld users like the Ally or Steam Deck, then they wouldn’t have a trackpad. It’s not a Dex only device even if that’s probably their largest customer base

Hey thao we're still waiting galaxy book 4 series review or 4 edge snapdragon X elite
Had a bad experience with this product. 3 months after purchasing the Nexdock, the logic board failed and had to be replaced. The same thing happened again a few months after the replacement. I notified Nexdock of a flaw in the soldering of the USB-C Display port. They acknowledged the flaw and offered me a new one for $100. I declined. I finally just threw it away.
They haven't changed that much I tried the initial one that they produced and I had to send it back only because it felt so flimsy and cheap and honestly was not too thrilled using it 😕
Man if this was a 1440p oled.....I'd buy the crap outta this
I love the fact samsung gives us so many options
Samsung used to offer a DeX app you could download, install in a target computer so, when you plugged your DeX-enabled phone, it would automatically take over the hardware so you could use your phone to drive the OS and the computer hardware would just be an interface. It was great, because you could literally get an old laptop, install windows 7 (it was a few years ago), and just use it to interface with your phone in desktop mode. It would be even less expensive than getting this. Sadly, Samsung removed the app a long time ago. Never understood why

Concept would be having everything on one device. Also with video input unlike a laptop you could hook up a Switch to it or use it for more than just a laptop. Also easier to share the lapdock across multiple users than a laptop
Companies have tried this over and over again nobody wants this form factor.

🤬 I pre-ordered the NexDock XL last year when it was advertised as having a 120hz screen and larger 57Wh battery. You can see for yourself using the wayback machine web archive. This is pretty shady of them to take my pre-order money and then change the specs without notifying me about the change. I already have the original NexDock that I was going to sell and upgrade to this new one but now I don't really know if its worth it anymore if it wont have the 120Hz display and bigger battery like they originally promised. 🤬
신기하지만... 왜 그래야 하는지 잘 모르겠네요 소개 감사합니다!
5 hours of use is hilariously bad. I have a 10" laptop with a full power Ryzen 16 thread processor and I get around 10 hours of regular use with it thanks to its 67Wh battery. Why Nexdock cant address the battery life, I don't understand. That kills the whole proposition.

@nickthaskater
17 күн бұрын
@@drwigglechin not really, no. You also quickly kill your phone in that case by having it drain while using DeX. Nexdock puts tiny batteries in their lapdocks. The XL has a 49Wh battery despite being a large 15" device. It's physics, and little to do with charging or not charging the connected device.

This just seems cumbersome
Nexdock if u r listening here. I love your concept. To have something that you don't need to buy a tab s ultra is awesome but few tweaks guys and ur on. U need somehow to make either wireless dex connection like thr new Apple way where even if ur phone is locked u just jump on that way the mouse pad can be normal for left and right ppl and if then u can't u need some cable way because the apple way requires some software in the nexdog laptop then u need the phone insert able so you can pick up laptop and fold it and still have trackpad middle and yeh get a camera guys. That's pretty much it Ppl need to feel to use it very seamless like a tablet feel no extra plugging and keeping phone some place is awkward no wireless and still need to activate things. I hope u do this I'd be a person to not have to buy a tab s10 or or tabs20 ultra in future.
