Artist's Notes:
For the last year or so, I've been working on the side on a project where I create Magical Girls inspired by different countries' traditional clothing! I love learning about cultural clothing, and I love Magical Girls, and I thought it'd be fun to combine both things. Today's video is China, making the 22nd girl that I've done for this series. I have reels for all 21 other girls on my instagram account, and in due time hopefully I can port those over to KZread.
As always, thank you for watching and let me know what you think! The next three girls I'm planning to do for this series in the future are South Africa, Brazil, and Palestine, as voted by my Instagram community~

    the fact that u took the time to research abt chinese culture AND create such a beautiful end result shooks me- WHY ARENT U POPULAR YET??? Also, since ur doing asian magical girls, could u do a singapore one in future? Im s'porean & despite our known rich diversity and multicultural population, often times it feels like one is represented more than the others here, (especially when ppl started assuming we were a chinese country at some point?) I feel rlly selfish for wantin this, but could you make her a beautiful, brown malay girl? She could be referencing one of our own native indigenous group (such as the orang Laut, kallang, Seletar, Gelam etc.) that were either failed to be conserved or assimilated over the years. I'm not tryin to downplay other minorities in sg, everyone deserves to feel/be represented but it feels so...suffocating when there's so little to no malay/indo rep in the first place. It doesn't even stop there when within our own small community, negatif stereotypes just exists and we are still perceived as such :( maybe..this is why representation is so important to me, i js want our side to shine too and reflect our roots. omg im genuinely so srry for this unnecessary long rant- ive felt this way for so long idk where to share it 👉👈

    I can tell that the colors you picked for her dress were taken from the chinese flag. But the thing is, red and gold combined are the traditional colors of wedding wear. For both men and women. Because of that, this magical girl kinda looks like a child bride. If you look closer, all the ref images shown in video where red is a predominant colors, white is used for accent. Never yellow or gold. That's due to wedding conotation

    Interesting! I didn’t know that about the color association, thanks for sharing! I can assure you however that this character isn’t a child. The majority of the girls I make for this series are imagined to be 18+ and I would never endorse anything as gross and deplorable as child brides. Also, I don’t necessarily see anything wrong with using wedding colors or traditions as inspiration for the designs in this series. In this modern day, for many cultures, traditional clothing is rarely worn except for weddings. And sometimes those clothes may or may not include the colors of the country’s flag. For example, when I designed Botswana, most of my reference pictures came from Tswana weddings. Most of the bridesmaids and brides wore dresses that were the same color as the flag. That doesn’t mean that I was trying to create a child bride. Weddings are just a much a part of a country’s culture as anything else, so I take inspiration from a country’s wedding traditions quite often, especially if they don’t have a designated national costume. I also don’t necessarily see why it would be a problem for a magical girl’s dress to look similar to a bride’s. It wouldn’t be the first time a Magical Girl has transformed into something that looks like a wedding dress (see Wedding Peach). I think the intention is important to consider in this regard.

    @@starsnoireartI swear I don't say this to make you look bad and you are not even the first person to do that. It's intuitive considering the colors of the chinese flag. I say this mostly to share the information. I also think your art is amazing and you deserve many subscribers. I wish you great success and happiness (cause sometimes success can bring bad energy)

    red and yellow aren't just associated with weddings, they're just celebratory colours in chinese culture. It would be more of a problem if the dress had dragon and Phoenix embroidery on it which would make it a wedding dress, since a traditional wedding dress is called a Dragon and Phoenix robe. But since it is just red and gold it just looks like a Chinese new year celebration dress. Also dragons are more so an imperial symbol more than anything. a dragon with 5 fingers being reserved for the imperial family, so its actually a good thing u didn't end up drawing a dragon.

    She looks great but it would be more accurate if she had more golden or tan skin. Despite what you see on TV, most Chinese people do not have pale skin…

    Can't wait for your take on a UK based magical girl, are you going to make separate girls based on the different countries or just one for all of the UK?

  • @starsnoireart

    @starsnoireart

    2 ай бұрын

    So, interestingly enough I had a whole design planned for the UK last year, but when I teased her in my stories, the feedback almost unanimously said: “please make separate designs for all the countries in the uk” lol. So that’s the plan! Currently, I have designs ready for all the countries except Wales. Northern Ireland is the only one with a finished artwork~ I have yet to post N.I anywhere, but I do show her in my 2023 art recap video. The rest will be complete in due time! 😁
