Turning an Oval Walnut Bowl from half of a log

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this project, I start with half of a log section and turn it into an oval shaped bowl with a barkless natural edge. This is a simple, but not necessarily easy, woodturning project. It can be done with either dried wood or green (wet) wood with little tendency for cracking compared to other bowl shapes. This was a pretty quick project, so I didn't speed the video up quite as much as usual. I hope you enjoy it and it gives you a new project to try! Thanks for watching!

It's one of my favorites too. Thanks for watching. My next video is also a walnut piece, but a very different project.

Man, I've watched hundreds of 'turning' videos, and yet I've never been able to pick up three important tips such as I just did.....by watching your 'one' video!! Depressing, and turning the knob to hold the headstock in place! Using the headstock to hold sanding attachment! And using an old mop brush to 'clean' the sanding disk when it becomes gummed up! Awesome man, and awesome walnut bowl..!!

That's great! That is exactly the type of things I was hoping people might pick up on, but so far you're the only person to explicitly say exactly what they learned. Thanks for watching and let me know if you have any questions!

Great video. I was just wondering why you chose to use that square profile scraper early in the shaping process rather than a bowl gouge.

The heavy scraper works great for evening out an uneven surface. Sometimes I use that, sometimes the bowl gouge. No major reason one way or the other. Thanks for watching!

As always, excellent work Chad. What is the finish you have used here?

Thanks, Joe! I use an oil based finish. 1:1:1 mix of BLO, polyurethane, and mineral spirits. That's what I use on almost everything I turn.

I’d say it was halfway between green and dried. I believe it was from a log that I had sitting around for a couple of years. Thanks for watching!
