You beat me to it, right down to the meme-format I was going to use. 😂 Proof that Nick is like everybody else; can't be arsed to do the right thing and just makes do with whatever's on hand instead. I did that just a few minutes ago, using a vice-grip to open a nut instead of going downstairs to get a wrench. 🤷
Is it okay to put a little paper umbrella in your coffee? It would definitely complete the look! ⛱️

So happy you did not sample that coconut. It looked horrible, so I can only imagine the smell. Love the look of that mug.

It was spoiled. Fresh coconuts are white, fresh, and smells good. I would sterilize that shell and let dry in sun to clean it and get the stink out of it.
Really cool coffee mug. Gilligan would be proud. “Thanks little buddy!” For another fun video.
Try using green (unripe) coconuts. The shell has a lighter color (could use a torch to make it darker), but the pulp slides out much easier… and it actually tastes good!

it wouldn't last. thin shells crack super easy.
As a kid I had a little coconut purse. They did what you did, but they drilled little holes and joined the little lid on with with string. They painted on pretty flowers and lined it with cheap fabric. I loved that little purse!
Spoiled coconut water dripping on the floor. My brain: This is how you get ants.

It would be funny if the coconut milk turned to coconut butter from all that spinning.
Would be perfect for a themed party mug. Or just for summer time in the garden.
You could sell those, but make sure the cup is glued on straight first as it looks a little wonky and that's doing my head in😂. But seriously, it's definitely a cool idea. I'd probably use them more for cold drinks, maybe cocktails🍹

I would personally love it if it was even wonkier. The mug looks big enough for it that it wouldn't spill, and the asymmetry looks good!
I can already tell this is going to be epic!! Love the coconuts 💜
Great video, Nick. This is what I love about your channel, the mix of big, intense projects and smaller, creative projects. I love how this coffee mug turned out.

More than fifty years ago, I helped my Dad turning coconuts into bowls - some of them with lids, some open. We sometimes used small round brass knobs as legs, if we didn't use the top as you did. If I remember correctly, cutting them open wasn't always easy and sometimes the hull would splinter and break apart and become unusable. I think that's when we used the little brass knobs ... Was fun seeing this done again!

You were lucky to have the Lathe. I did mine all be hand. I cut my cap down to halfway the a cap so I had a ring for the main piece to sit on, and glued them together. I heated them up then rubbed in corn oil to seal it all. Made one nice soup bowl as a parting gift for my friend. I enjoy watching you work. I learn something new each time.
Love to see different things made from natural objects! Looks kind of like a desert cup! ❤
I love Nick arguing with his intrusive thoughts about eating the old pulp
@Burn77oas7

It's not pulp, it's coconut meat, you all been drinking out of cans too much, if you pour the water out of a cleanly opened coco there is no "pulp" ... The marketing companies chop up coconut meat and mix it in the water and call it pulp, quit dumbing yourself and the rest of the world down.

Hi Nick, this mug is very common here in Brazil, most often at North and Northeast regions. It is called as coconut cuia or coconut coité.

@@nynkevandijk3187 wood insulates good. Besides I hold the mug not the handle when I drink coffee. Besides if it is not hot enough to blister your mouth it is not going to blister your hands through the cup.
I would have to have a Pina colada, or a Bahama mamma in it! It does look pretty cool, Nick!!
You are a joy to watch Nick. 🤗 You do so many clever, unique, quirky, and beautiful projects. I like your mug and the coffee mug is not bad either. 😂 The pattern on the coconut would make pretty necklace pendants I bet. Blessings to you and yours. 🙏🏽💓

Absolutely love it, Nick! I was wondering how you were gonna make it stand up, and I hadn't even considered using the 'lid' as a base!
Nice! I think it would look awesome with gold leaf plating inside! The golden shimmer would complement the dark outside just perfectly.

Fermented coconut and it's water is fine, it's like any other fermented food, as long as you made the first oxygen break , if there was a crack and it rotted then it would definitely not be good to digest

Well, Monty Python made horses out of coconuts so I don't see any issue with making a coffee mug out of one...

The Pythons missed a marketing opportunity there: I reckon pairs of ‘Clip Clop Cups’ would’ve sold well as Grail merch. Is it too horrible a pun to say “food for thought”?
Fun fact....smell = tiny molecules of what you are smelling, traveling up into your head to stimulate olfactory nerves...😮
It’s adorable.
It turned out great, it's so beautiful.
Yeah I hope so but the idea is kinda nuts
Funky indeed ❤
Now that funky.
Our ancestors used to make cups, coffee mugs, bowls, spoons, forks and jewelry with coconut shells. It takes more time but the beauty is the ancestral symbols that we adorn them with.
Definitely a cool cup of coffee mug... would buy that in a heart beat...

I want it.. lol. I love coconut and and I love coffee.
Yeah, that's pretty darn cool.
That's a cool modern art looking cup
I'm with the Handle People, but that's just me. When I was a teen I made a container out of a coconut shell. Same process but without a lathe and all sanding by hand. I made the cut at the top a little deeper so I could use it as a lid. I made a hinge out of leather thong (rawhide string) and a two-bit closure on the front with the same bits. My parents were so proud of me! I used that thing as a little jewelry box for decades. I don't recall what ever happened to it but I loved that thing. It was a rotund shape, really cute. I like yours!! I've just recently purchased two coconut bowls that I use when camping, for cereal or soup.
What a fun project!
I absolutely love the texture of coconut shell. 🥥 It's fun to use to make all sorts of arts and crafts
As soon as i saw the thumbnail, i wanted it!😊❤
Now that’s a cool looking mug
So excited to see this come up on my feed!
That’s bloody brilliant!
Your videos make me happy.
This is the way that we used to process these when I was in the Pacific Islands…. No lathe though, just hand tools, hard work and some bottle assistance…. Then these would last ages as a drinking vessel. The “lid” would be added to the base to make a more stable cup. I miss my mug, and it was handmade over 25 years ago…
never would have thought of this idea. Pretty cool!
That is adorable!
Needs a tropical drink in there!
Simple, yet great idea!
Always a pleasure seeing you
I thought this idea was nuts but it turned out ace 😆
I absolutely love that cup! I would use that cup every single day
In the 18th and 19th centuries coconut cups were a rare and distinctive display of wealth because it showed you could afford to travel to remote and exotic places. Many were mounted in silver to reflect their rarity and perceived worth and for that reason, many more survive today than one might expect and regularly come up for sale. Interesting to see a modern craftsman reviving such an old skill.
I would've drained the "milk" out first and used a fresher one, added a handle. But, you have spawned some ideas with my turning. You crazy man.
