I did that just a few minutes ago, using a vice-grip to open a nut instead of going downstairs to get a wrench. 🤷

More than fifty years ago, I helped my Dad turning coconuts into bowls - some of them with lids, some open. We sometimes used small round brass knobs as legs, if we didn't use the top as you did. If I remember correctly, cutting them open wasn't always easy and sometimes the hull would splinter and break apart and become unusable. I think that's when we used the little brass knobs ... Was fun seeing this done again!

In the 18th and 19th centuries coconut cups were a rare and distinctive display of wealth because it showed you could afford to travel to remote and exotic places. Many were mounted in silver to reflect their rarity and perceived worth and for that reason, many more survive today than one might expect and regularly come up for sale. Interesting to see a modern craftsman reviving such an old skill.

I'm with the Handle People, but that's just me. When I was a teen I made a container out of a coconut shell. Same process but without a lathe and all sanding by hand. I made the cut at the top a little deeper so I could use it as a lid. I made a hinge out of leather thong (rawhide string) and a two-bit closure on the front with the same bits. My parents were so proud of me! I used that thing as a little jewelry box for decades. I don't recall what ever happened to it but I loved that thing. It was a rotund shape, really cute. I like yours!! I've just recently purchased two coconut bowls that I use when camping, for cereal or soup.
